Wits ended UWC’s Varsity Shield final hopes with a 28-15 win in Bellville on Monday.
UWC, who started the tournament on a promising note, had to acheive a bonus-point win to stand a chance of qualifying for their first tournament title decider. However, Wits killed off their hopes with a victory created by a strong first-half showing.
The students from Johannesburg led 23-5 at the break as they scored three tries via scrumhalf Brent Crossley, lock Charles Baggot and hooker Piers Cooper. UWC played better in the second stanza, but Baggot completed his brace early after half-time to seal the 13-point win.
