Blues pick Weepu at 10
21 Mar 2012
Piri Weepu will start at flyhalf for the Blues in their Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes on Friday.
Weepu will don the No 10 jersey for the first time this season against his and inside centre Ma’a Nonu’s former team in Auckland. He replaces Gareth Anscombe, who scored all the Blues’ points in their 29-23 win over the Bulls at Loftus. Alby Mathewson takes over at scrumhalf.
Head coach Pat Lam has also selected a new set of wings, as David Raikuna returns to the starting line-up after pulling out of the Stormers clash with injury last weekend while Rudi Wulf makes his first appearance of the year. Ben Lam and Sherwin Stowers fall out.
There are five changes to the pack with loosehead prop Tony Woodcock, hooker Tom McCartney, lock Liaki Moli, flank Chris Lowrey and No 8 Brad Mika promoted.
Meanwhile, there is bad news for injured fullback Isaia Toeava, who could be sidelined for the rest of the year with a stress fracture to his hip. It’s an injury that has troubled the All Black for the past two seasons, and he will be out until 2013 if he undergoes surgery.
