Action galore at Grey festival

Paul Roos, Grey PE, Queen’s and Michaelhouse picked up their second wins on day two of the Grey PE festival on Monday.

The quartet all recorded impressive wins. Paul Roos finished strongly to down Kearsney 30-20, hosts Grey PE thumped local rivals Marlow 40-25, Queen’s whipped Hilton 25-6, while Michaelhouse pipped Nico Malan, who were impressive on day one, 28-22.

Dale, Daniel Pienaar and Maritzburg College, who couldn’t play on day one because of heavy rain, are the other unbeaten teams as they beat Die Brandwag (22-5), DHS (22-3) and Bishops (35-18) respectively. SACS picked up a surprise 28-23 win over Selborne, who were the top Eastern Cape school in 2011. Dale and Westville were also winners.

Tournament director Fenner Barnard was delighted with the entertainment on show on Monday, following the disappointing weather conditions on the opening day.

‘It was a lovely sunny day in PE, so all the schools could play their natural game and there was some great action on show,’ Barnard told Schoolboy Derby. ‘There were a few good fixtures, but the highlight was Maritzburg College’s win over Bishops. Both sides played expansively and there were a few intercept tries that caused some drama. Maritzburg College captain and outside centre Daniel Kriel was the standout player of the day.’

Barnard added that Paul Roos, Grey PE and SACS were the other top performers.

‘Paul Roos hustled well against Kearsney, who were far better on day two – probably because of the drier conditions. SACS surprised many too and they should be able to beat some of the more fancied schools in the Western Cape.

‘Grey PE picked up an impressive win, which was their first victory over Marlow in the past three clashes between the two schools.’

Most of the Western Cape and KZN schools return home after day two, but there will still be some exciting matches on Wednesday, the final day of the festival. The feature game will see unbeaten Grey PE tackle Maritzburg College.
