Willie le Roux and Lappies Labuschagne have finally been rewarded with spots in the Springbok training group. They are two of eight that are first timers in Springbok training groups this year. The others are Gio Aplon, Trevor Nyakane, JJ Engelbrecht, Lionel Mapoe, Wiehahn Herbst and Demetri Catrakilis. The group of players will assemble in Durban for the second training camp of the year, before the final squad for the Incoming Tours is selected. Players not considered due to injury include: JP Pietersen, Jaco Taute, Frans Steyn, Johan Goosen, Duane Vermeulen, Pat Cilliers and Frans Malherbe. ... Read Article25 May 2013
Morne Steyn kicked 18 points to beat the Sharks and end the hosts Super Rugby play-off aspirations. The Sharks looked to have conjured up a remarkable victory when Charl McLeod scored and Pat Lambie converted in the 75th minute. But within two minutes the Sharks were guilty of a lineout infringement and Steyn punished the lack of discipline. The Sharks had opportunities to sneak the victory in a frantic finish but lacked the decision-making to turn a possession and field position advantage into victory. The Bulls, thanks to Steyn's kicking, consolidated their position at the top of the ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article26 Mar 2012

Why do you make me watch it? Can’t you just write it!
26 Mar 2012, 14:18 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-1: Im not gonna bother.
Will just wait for more comments to get the nucleus of it.
26 Mar 2012, 14:20 pm
@Taahirah(Taahirah)-2:
I ended up watching it – gives Ludeke more credit than anyone else (gives credit to Jake’y’ & Mitchell) and says Allister is kak.
26 Mar 2012, 14:23 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-3: Keo is a shameless troll. I think he smells a ‘zero to hero’ story at the brumbies, so he has to kiss and make up with his slimey friend. the thing is, this story has not bee completed yet, so it might be a complete damp squid like JWWW.
26 Mar 2012, 14:26 pm
@Taahirah(Taahirah)-2: To summarise:
Jake, Mitchell and Ludeke = good.
Coetzee = not good.
Michael Hooper = good, but a McCaw not a Smith.
Brumbies = South African
Lions = plodders
26 Mar 2012, 14:29 pm
@pompies2(pompies2)-4: Squids are usually wet, not damp. Unless you meant damp squib.
26 Mar 2012, 14:30 pm
In other news – Doppies is out for 3 months (shoulder).
Falling like flies.
26 Mar 2012, 14:36 pm
@HHS(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-7: Shame poor Lions. They are getting it heavy now.
26 Mar 2012, 14:38 pm
@Simon(Simon)-6: lol
26 Mar 2012, 14:38 pm
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-3: Keo is jumping on the Bulls bandwagon after the big win over the Reds. Typical fickle behaviour from the Keomeister.
26 Mar 2012, 14:42 pm
@DonutDunning(DonutDunning)-5: Does Keo say Michael Cooper? lol
26 Mar 2012, 14:43 pm
“Jakey, you know what I think of you as a coach and you know what I think of you as a friend. As a coach… top notch, well done buddy.”
Jeez keo, talk about flaunting your dirty laundry in public.
Apart from that little dig, any more smoke blown up Jakey’s bumbum would see him declared an official hotbox. This kind of sucking up does not make for comfortable viewing.
26 Mar 2012, 14:44 pm
@Simon(Simon)-6: I loveit when you talk foreign
26 Mar 2012, 14:45 pm
@Simon(Simon)-6:
you’re such a nazi but that is funny haha
damp squid hehe
as you said, its in fact an explosive hence the the term when failing to meet expectations.
26 Mar 2012, 14:47 pm
@>^..^< katman(katman)-12: I’m glad to see that they’ve learned to be civil, if only for the sake of the children.
26 Mar 2012, 14:48 pm
John Mitchell one of the best coaches so far this year?
26 Mar 2012, 14:48 pm
The sour nancy whiners are trying their best to save face now. Admit it moegoes, you were hoping White would fail so that you could gloat.
26 Mar 2012, 14:50 pm
Jumping the gun there Keo – Not the business end of year yet
I say Mitchell is doing better then Jake over longer period
with a weaker squad and poorer depth. Lions should have beaten WP. Deserved better in that game.
26 Mar 2012, 14:52 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-10: keo was on the bulls bandwagon as a 10 year old … if you have followed my career, my writing and my rants … you’ll know that I am bulls through and through
26 Mar 2012, 14:53 pm
@Shark(Predawn)-17: At least he has the cojones to admit he was wrong.
Spiro Zavos is still holding a grudge against George Gregan after 16 years, for his role as a 21 year old ringleader of the attempt to branch off from the IRB. Apparently the captains Pienaar, Kearns and Fitzpatrick were just pawns to young Gregan the evil mastermind.
26 Mar 2012, 14:53 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-16: john mitchell of the best coaches period …
26 Mar 2012, 14:54 pm
@greatest13gerber(greatest13gerber)-18: Yes, you guys should have beaten the Blues.
The Sharks should have beaten the ‘Tahs
The Cheetah’s should have beaten, well, just about every team they’ve played so far it seems.
See where I’m going with this?
You guys should apparently beat the Stormers this Saturday…..
26 Mar 2012, 14:55 pm
@greatest13gerber(greatest13gerber)-18: not jumping gun on anything. Simple acknowledgement of where Brumbies were last year at this time and the immense improvement in them as a team. I don’t say they will win anything or even finish top 10. The impact of his coaching is obvious and I am stating that.
26 Mar 2012, 14:56 pm
@DonutDunning(DonutDunning)-20: And if you watch the old footage, Gregan actually still had hair back then.
26 Mar 2012, 14:57 pm
@>^..^< katman(katman)-12: have I offended your sensitivities?
26 Mar 2012, 14:57 pm
@Simon(Simon)-6: good for noticing. thanks for the correction. it’s nice when the shoe’s on the other foot hey?
26 Mar 2012, 14:59 pm
@Sasuke(Sasuke)-11: I do indeed and then I say hooper … the human in me to confuse the odd c and h
26 Mar 2012, 14:59 pm
@keo(keo)-23: I’v always had a very halthy respct for Jake’s abilities.
But I must say, I did not expect to see him do as well as he has done so far.
Kudos to him.
26 Mar 2012, 15:01 pm
@keo(keo)-25: What sensitivities? I’m just trying to help you here. Public displays of ingratiation are seldom pleasant spectacles.
26 Mar 2012, 15:02 pm
@stormersboy(stormersboy)-22:
Yes – I see your point. Although, now you mention it. I feel for OVS the most – they deserve better then anyone! Very unlucky!!
26 Mar 2012, 15:03 pm
boys and girls remember Hooper’s name he is going to be around for the next decade … he is the closest I have seen to the McCaw who made his debut against Ireland in 2001
26 Mar 2012, 15:05 pm
@keo(keo)-31: is he the no.7 flank of the brumbies? the little one who plays like an openside “fetcher” flank?
26 Mar 2012, 15:07 pm
@keo(keo)-23:
ah I see – I agree with that. Big turnaround.
Much like mitchell with Tvl
26 Mar 2012, 15:09 pm
@keo(keo)-31:
the Gill boy for the Reds is another one.
Where are all our young fetchers gone??
the next Burger Geldenhuys, Brussouw etx

the Stormers need Wayne Smith
Smith tips Lancaster
Sunday, 25 March 2012 9:17 a.m.
Wayne Smith, the New Zealand attack specialist tipped for a role in the England set-up, expects Stuart Lancaster to be given the full-time head coach’s job.
Lancaster, who led England through the Six Nations on an interim basis, and Nick Mallett were interviewed by the Rugby Football Union yesterday, with deliberations expected to continue today.
Smith did not apply for the head coach’s job, but he is keen on a return to international rugby, having helped the All Blacks’ World Cup triumph last year alongside Graham Henry and Steve Hansen.
“I assume Stuart Lancaster will get the England job. I also assume he will be able to get Andy Farrell out of his Saracens contract and keep (Graham) Rowntree on board,” Smith said.
“That is what I think will happen, but it is win-win for England at the moment because I also have huge respect for Nick Mallett’s abilities. I await the puff of smoke with interest.”
Smith, who is seen as one of the best attack coaches in the game, has put on record his interest in working with England. He coached alongside Mallett in last year’s Help For Heroes charity match at Twickenham.
Press Association Sport understands he has not had any contact with the RFU.
“I have been asked, with reference to England, if a number of strong coaches can work together,” Smith wrote in a blog on http://www.therugbysite.com.
“It can work, but your beliefs and philosophies need to be aligned.
“Could I work with Lancaster? I don’t know the man, I like where I am at the moment, but I respect what he has achieved. And is that question the right way round?”
Smith praised the work Lancaster did during the Six Nations in rebuilding the England team following their failed World Cup campaign.
But he believes the next step in England’s development is to create an attacking system that would test the best teams in the world.
“Stuart Lancaster has done a hell of a job in his short time as national coach,” Smith said.
“If I was an England supporter I would be pretty excited.
“But Lancaster will know that as far as England have come, they will have to keep improving if they are to compete with the southern hemisphere.
“I think that they play South Africa four times, New Zealand, Australia and Fiji before the end of the year. They won’t beat those sides just smashing the ball up. They will need an attacking strategy by then and they will need alignment with all the coaches and players.“
26 Mar 2012, 15:22 pm
Aus U@) Captain Colby Faingaa is the Brumbies first choice opensider when he’s not injured… Jake has two of the brightest prospects in Australia… and good to see his poaching of Tomane is paying off for him…
Winnings ways indeed… from surrounding himself with the best team of coaching, to his new conditioning regime to their home record… even Jeremy Paul and co are singing his praises!
26 Mar 2012, 15:33 pm
Didn’t Jake rate Alistair highly? He actually recommended him to the Bok coaching job way back…
26 Mar 2012, 15:40 pm
reckon brumbies are far from a formidable team, but he’s def made them compeitive, they need talent to be formidable, same as lions
@HHS(Hop Hop Spinnekop)-7:
thats unbelievable, must be about 8 first class players out now – must say tho thought the young LH prop did exceptionally well, works incredible hard, he and cilliers got through an enormous amount of work. the one lock seems pretty useful also, greef.
26 Mar 2012, 16:06 pm
@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-37: I think he’s recommended everyone except Markgraaf and Chester to the Bok post at one stage or another.
26 Mar 2012, 16:08 pm
@keo(keo)-31: I doubt he will ever appear for the Wallabies while Pocock is there owns the jersey, he is tried and tested and until we see how good Hooper is against the likes of McCaw or some of the crazy big loose forwards that the Saffer teams bring I think I will be a little sceptical. As good as Hooper is it is a long fight ahead of him if he wants to take the take his position in the starting line up from Pocock.
26 Mar 2012, 16:13 pm
Well Well Well! Is there a great reconciliation on the cards between Keo and Jake?
Well done to Keo to complimenting the coach even if they had personal differences.
Keo – if you knew you said “Cooper” why didnt you just re-shoot the clip?
I must say I disagree about the Stormers woes being AC’s fault. There is no way a coach will coach a team to play for the first 15 min and last 10 mins!
I am a Stormers/WP fan and I am not happy with this season so far. It is deja vu of last season – winning but not convincingly and no bonus points.
Jean D V says the SAME things in every interview. Any Stormers player should by now know that they tend to 1. Defend a lead and 2. Go to sleep. Their supporters know it! So how can the players not?!
A player like De Jongh has brought some spark into the midfield – he somehow finds a gap or a space to go forward 90% of the time. But the Stormers dont keep the ball, they keep kicking it away far too often and aimlessly. That I will say AC needs to remedy, but I wouldnt say he hasnt learned anything in 3 years.
26 Mar 2012, 16:18 pm
@welcome to my life, hugh…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-14:
An explosive???
26 Mar 2012, 16:31 pm
@keo(keo)-19: What then are the words to the song “Kaptein”?????
26 Mar 2012, 16:49 pm
Hold your celebration!
The Brumbies haven’t won against any powerhouse team yet, they had difficulties beating the Cheetahs and needed the referee to land them a hand
JW will get better for sure but wait for the half season mark first before singing their praises
26 Mar 2012, 17:25 pm
I cannot understand what Coetzee did in order to receive a contract extension for another 3 years. I can only assume that there is that much chaos going down at the WPRU headquarters that it was just easier to extend his contract rather than go through the processes involved in securing someone new.
26 Mar 2012, 17:39 pm
Not sure if Transie can shed some more light on this, but if it’s true this must be one of the biggest tragedies of SA Rugby…
http://mg.co.za/article/2012-03-26-six-south-african-rugby-players-feared-dead
26 Mar 2012, 18:13 pm
@cab(cab)-38: Brumbies have that talent. To soak up that Chief’s onslaught and handle the Highlanders big pack is nothing short of exceptional. still underrated, and stil a lot of very sour views on here though. I don’t understand what Jake has done to warrant such vitriol from South Africans. The rugby world respects him, and that is a much better and more realistic impression of him. Not a messiah, but a highly astute coach that is never too big or successful to learn from even the most lowly of people. That demands respect. You are quite right though, the wheels may yet come off for te Brumbies, as it may for the Bulls, Highlanders, Chiefs, Stormers and a host of others. But what they have done already is no fluke and it would be an even bigger shock to me if they failed rather than succeeded in the remainder of their campaign.
26 Mar 2012, 18:16 pm
@Hondo(Hondo)-44: The Highlanders pack is top of the pile alongside the Bulls. They have a very formidable backline too. The Chiefs have explosiveness all over the field and threw everything at the Brumbies. The Force may be more humble opposition, but still a quality side that was a tough challenge for a Brumbie side effectively taking a standing start. The Cheetahs game was more fortuitous in the end, both side had opportunities to close that game out. So no, they have faced a steep set of challenges so far.
26 Mar 2012, 18:20 pm
@bokfan1(bokfan1)-41: You are right de Jongh has been one of the better players. The entir backline is stale and there is little real innovation in what they are doing. Coetzee’s problem is that he comes from the perspective of old school rugby, you can see it in a number of plays that Jean runs for the Stormers and under Jake’s era. He simply isn’t good enough. A lot of quality wasted in that side.
26 Mar 2012, 18:23 pm
John Mitchell is overrated. He has done far less than Eloff but with more resources. Nothing of note.
