Reeling Reds rope in Lane

Former South Africa schools star Sam Lane has been drafted into the Reds squad following yet another serious injury.

The Reds went into the 2012 season without the services of flyhalf Quade Cooper, who was recovering from a knee injury sustained at the 2011 World Cup. The Reds lost two more flyhalf options in Mike Harris and Ben Lucas when they played the Sharks two weeks ago, and another when Jono Lance broke his leg in last Saturday’s game against the Bulls.

This has prompted the Reds to sign Sam Lane, the son of former Wallabies centre Tim Lane, on a short-term contract. The 21-year-old flyhalf attended Bishops in South Africa and represented Western Province at the age group levels and in the Vodacom Cup.

He also trialled for the SA U20 side last year before seriously injuring his knee. Lane has since moved back to his home country, and before he received a call from Reds coach Ewen McKenzie, he was training at the ARU’s national academy.

It’s been confirmed that Lane will be considered for the Reds’ next fixture against the Force.

Aside from the mass losses in the flyhalf position, Reds hooker Saia Faingaa will also be unavailable after sustaining an injury in the heavy defeat to the Bulls.

    Great time to play the Reds. Luckily for them they are only playing the Force and Brumbies before their bye. They wouldn’t want to lose those matches though and I think they will probably lose one if not both. Stormers have them in Brisbane after that with Ione still banned, great chance to get valuable overseas points…

    Does this mean he is done with WP/Stormers?

    @ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-1: Actually he is Aussie by birth and only stayed in SA cos his dad coached here (Tim Lane). Pity WP could not hold onto him but he was always going to go back home I think.

    @welcome to my life, hugh…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-6:

    I tipped a 40 point margin…a team is going to struggle with 9 regulars gone.

    @sparticus(sparticus)-8: WP let a good one go here. His bnest attribute was his distribution, not that his others were no good. Considering what WP have in Van Aswegen and Coleman, Lane trumps both of them.

    @wallabie.(wallabie.)-9: The Lions were 13 men down and they put up a brave performance, what was your points difference for the Lions game.

    What is that with all the Reds flyhalves getting injured at an unusual rate?
    Something is terribly wrong here, is that Genia’s distribution or maybe their loose forwards don’t provide the adequate protection?
    Or maybe they simply stand too flat?
