KeoTV: Goosen’s got it
27 Mar 2012
MARK KEOHANE says Johan Goosen will become to the Springboks what Dan Carter is to the All Blacks but stresses that Morne Steyn is still at the top of the pile of South African flyhalves.

Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article19 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article27 Mar 2012

Agree with you Keo. Morne Steyn still looks good but the youngsters are pushing him hard. Especially Goosen.
When is Jantjies coming back?
27 Mar 2012, 08:23 am
Yep he looks to be a real class act
27 Mar 2012, 08:24 am
Springbok backline players for England tests will come from:
Fourie Du Preez, Francois Hougaard
Morne Steyn, Johann Goosen (but will carry tackle bags and won’t play)
Bryan Habana, Bjorn Basson, Lwazi Mvovo
Francois Steyn, Jean De Villiers, Wynand Olivier
Jacques Fourie, Juan De Jongh, Johann Sadie
JP Pieterson, Gio Aplon
Patrick Lambie
Others (like Pretorius, Jantjies, Jordaan, Taute) will filter in post England games.
27 Mar 2012, 08:36 am
Still dont understand why he kicked the ball out at the end of the Saders game – look not complaining but seemed very strange.
27 Mar 2012, 08:43 am
@stew(stew)-6: Naka’s orders. Didn’t want to risk it just to gain 1 league point, or turn the ball over and possibly lose the 1 point they already had,
27 Mar 2012, 08:44 am
@stew(stew)-6: I think Naka explained it quite a bit now that he sent an order for the ball to be kicked out.
27 Mar 2012, 08:46 am
think naka’s just trying to take the heat off the kid…
either that or the other guys weren’t listening to his orders because they all seemed keen to have a go…
27 Mar 2012, 08:51 am
naka is doing damage control…how come the captain adriaan strauss didn’t get that call, cos he threw his hands over his head when he saw the ball flying yowards the stands!
27 Mar 2012, 08:55 am
Didn’t see the game, only read what Nakak had to say.
27 Mar 2012, 08:59 am
Goosen should be the Bok 1st choice. Steyn does not have the smarts or all round game to dominate at test level. Goosen , Le Roux and Ebersohn were fantastic with ball in hand.
27 Mar 2012, 09:08 am
just a matter of time before the stormers sign him i reckon
27 Mar 2012, 09:11 am
@garth(garth)-12: Ebersohn is finally looking really dangerous in the 13 jersey..would love to see a Cheetahs backline with a dominating pack..My money is on Goosen for Bok 10 at the moment, prefer his general play above that of Morne..no problems in the 10 department of Bok ruggga..
27 Mar 2012, 09:12 am
@puff(puff)-5: Jordaan??
27 Mar 2012, 09:17 am
He has it all!! Just needs to change his attitude and be a team player!
27 Mar 2012, 09:17 am
Personally I wouldn’t use Goosen against the Poms… let him finish a SuperRugby season first… I rather not put the pressure on the kid and let him become the next gaffie du toit…
yes, he’s composed and self-assured on the field… but so was gaffie… with frans and morne the kicking out of hand will be covered… and the poms would certainly target a freshman flyhalf big time…
i’d start phasing goosen in for the end of year tours…
would stick with morne and lambie till then…
27 Mar 2012, 09:18 am
@weakoma(weakoma)-14: Unless FDP and Steyn are selected.
27 Mar 2012, 09:21 am
@ufo(ufo)-17: Who is worried about kicking out of hand? What has that got to do with anything?
27 Mar 2012, 09:21 am
That kick was the strangest thing i saw on a rugby field in many a year. I was shocked.
27 Mar 2012, 09:21 am
@puff(puff)-5: Not bad. I think you are more or less correct. I hope that when it comes to the England series the Boks brain trust will be mindful of the teams who are still in contention for the S15 play-offs.
My team for the England series
1. Guthro
2. Adriaan Strauss

@ufo(ufo)-17:
Agree, Steyn is doing fine. We have found the backline problems last year at the WC.
JDV!
The moment he was injured we looked good.
How many tries have the stormers backs scored so far? Not including Turnover tries.
And how many has the Bulls backs scored? Not including turnover tries.
27 Mar 2012, 09:35 am
@Mr Black(Mr Black)-22:
The only time the Bok backline looked ‘good’ in last year’s RWC was against teams ranked outside of the top 8 in world rugby!
27 Mar 2012, 09:36 am
@garth(garth)-19:
hehehe…
what difference does it make…?
the difference between having the opportunity to have a go and maybe tie the scores and take two bonus points home instead of one…
no biggie really…
just ask adriaan…
27 Mar 2012, 09:38 am
@Mr Black(Mr Black)-22:
yeah… i think jdv should be in the squad… but frans should definitely start…
any sharks fans have any news about his decision yet…? would be great to have him playing in sa again… for the sharks and for the boks…
27 Mar 2012, 09:39 am
anyway… work calls…
outta here…
great day to all…!!
27 Mar 2012, 09:43 am
@Mr Black(Mr Black)-20:
you are not alone,
i am here with you,
though we’re far apart,
the strangeness is also in my heart….
27 Mar 2012, 09:44 am
When are the Sharks getting the cheque book out for this kid?
Goosen 10, Steyn 12, Lambie 15.
Not shabby at all.
27 Mar 2012, 09:52 am
i do not entirely agree with the assesment that morne can only play behind a pack that is dominant. I would say that he needs to at least get some quick ruck ball…something neither the bulls nor boks could manage last year nor boks for 2 years.
Basically, in my opinion, when a side gets to superrugby semi final standard….that is test match standard. And morne has never had a problem.
and then there is jean devilliers. Who has destroyed every backline he has played for. Never has been a gameplayer who brings other backs into the game.Best games were years back out on the wing or when jakes gameplan was to defend and he’d get an intercept pickoff.
27 Mar 2012, 10:19 am
I agree with ufo, let Goosen play in the Year End Tour after a full season of top flight rugby.
Heineken would need to ease into the position and playing Goosen against the Poms would not be ideal.
Injury free Goosen/Jantjies, Hougaard (at scrumhalf or wing), Etzebeth, Kolisi, Kitshoff, Taute, Coetzee etc. will allow Bok Rugby to dominate for the next decade, so lets not get ahead of ourselves
27 Mar 2012, 10:19 am
isn’t ‘Goosen the Saviour’ the very same lemon who kicks the ball out just to save a losing bonus point ?!
27 Mar 2012, 10:40 am
Johan Goosen
Dan Carter
in the same sentence? Keo, Big Wraps but the comparison(?) should be to a young Frans Steyn.
27 Mar 2012, 10:43 am
@Taahirah(Taahirah)-28:
poor OVS
feeder union still for the Big 3
27 Mar 2012, 11:00 am
@stew(stew)-6: Whether Naka said it or not, it was absolutely the right decision to kick it out. Cheetahs were in there own 22 and 7 points down, the absolute very best they could have done was got a draw, which would have earned them 2 log points instead of the 1 they already had. With the Kings believing that they have been guaranteed super rugby next season every point is vital as coming last will not look good. No South African team has beaten the Crusaders in New Zealand for years a losing bonus point is a good result. Nobody ever wants to finish last, but this season you REALLY don’t want to come last!
27 Mar 2012, 11:01 am
slow day today hey
27 Mar 2012, 11:10 am
I do think Goosen is the future, but I won’t get carried away just yet. Give the kid a year or two to grow into the role and then unleash him onto the world. Bringing him in now will only hamper his development. If I was Meyer I would rather bring new players in after they have proven that they can get over 2nd year slump. Often we see players come in with a bang but then quickly fades as soon as teams figure them out. Look at how drastic $oney Bill$ William$ form dropped off towards the end of the Super 15 last year.
On a side note, looks like JP’s conversion to centre is going really well. I think a centre pairing of Steyn and Pietersen is just what could prove to massive boost for the boks backline.
27 Mar 2012, 11:18 am
I mean how stupid was that?
27 Mar 2012, 11:23 am
Brigadier van Zyl. Ask yourself this question? Why has every coach he has ever played for consistently picked JdV over every other option as his first choice 12 or picked him on the wing? The only people who slag off JdV are one-eyed fans.
27 Mar 2012, 11:29 am
@stormer in a teacup(stormer in a teacup)-38:
well, he’s only ever played for wp with no other viable options at 12.
and then for the boks where jake was in love with him and he accumulated 50 odd caps. And twakkie was never going to drop a 50 cap veteran, well, actually, he did and replaced him with jacobs for a while.
27 Mar 2012, 11:46 am
@ufo(ufo)-9: If you think that you obviously never saw Goossen play. He’s a glory-hound. He’ll always be there quickly to make sure the team knows he’s gonna take the shot to the poles (up to 60m) and he won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. If he can’t kick, he’ll run the ball. He is still years away from taking ‘the safe route’.
27 Mar 2012, 11:48 am
@PrickBoks going South(PrickBoks going South)-31: hey tosspot, i know your life – pretty lonely huh?
27 Mar 2012, 12:02 pm
Morne is getting old and he is not performing in the ONLY thing he is good at… goal kicking. I say Goosen as first choice, its time to start a new era of SA rugby.
My team for England would go as follows-
1. The Beast (if fit)
2. Bismark Du Plessis
3. Coenie Oosthuizen or Janie Du Plessis
4. Andries Bekker
5. Eben Etzebeth or Juandre Kruger
6. Hendrich Brousouw
7. Schalky
8. Willem Alberts
9. Francois Hougaard
10. Johan Goosen
11. Habana (He looks on form and I have secret confidence in him)
12. Francois Steyn
13. Jaque Fourie or Juan De Jong
14. JP Pieterson
15. Pat Lambie
16. Adriaan Struass
17. Janie Du Plessis or Coenie Oosthuizen
18. Juandre Kruger or Eben Etzebeth
19. Spies
20. Fourie Du Preez (if hes serious about returning)
21. Morne Steyn or Jantjies
22. Willie Le Roux
27 Mar 2012, 12:18 pm
England Tests
1.Guthro
2.Bismark
3.Cilliers
4.Kruger
5.Bekker
6.Brussow
7.Burger(c)
8.Spies
9.Hougaard
10.Jantjies
11.Mvovo
12.Steyn
13.JPP
14.Aplon
15.Lambie
16.Rallapelle
17.Jannie
18.Beast
19.Etzebeth
20.Alberts
21.Du Preez
22.De Jongh
27 Mar 2012, 12:30 pm
mshiniwami – Morne Steyn will be flyhalf v England and J Fourie will be 13. J Fourie will be nice and rested come test time!! I just hope Hougie is scrumhalf, he needs lots of time there as he spent alot of years on the wing instead of at scrummie!!
But yes Heneke has to decide who the future players are and bring them in soon!!
Jake White did the same at the beginning of his tenure and created a great team over 4 years which is still lasting now!!
27 Mar 2012, 12:43 pm
i am failing to see the purpose of keeping Morne Steyn around when you have Johan Goosen. Steyn’s trump card is his kicking, incredible as it is… However, Goosen appears to be at least equally as good, so without that what exactly does Morne Steyn offer over Goosen? I also don’t buy this whole conservative “he’s not ready” attitude with regards to age, if he’s the form player in his position in the S15 then he is already outperforming his rivals and surely this would constitute “ready”… simple as that really.
27 Mar 2012, 12:47 pm
Goosen is my primary choice too.
Not tomorrow, not next year.
Right now.
27 Mar 2012, 13:14 pm
I’m probably out of my dept here, But I love reading the South African rugby news.
I’m a kiwi All black supporter of course. And I live in Australia. So i’m actually getting the best of 3 worlds. But I love the way Sth Africa play. You have so much talent but sometimes fail to show the mongrel.
I have selected a Springbok team for you. I think I have got most of it right. Hope So. Must have = ***

Pauly… Just not Hargreaves… Rest of the team very good!
27 Mar 2012, 14:05 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-48: Ja, have to agree, nice team. But don’t know about Hargreaves. I would have Juandre Kruger or Elstadt in the mix, and maybe start with Etzebeth.
For number 3, don’t know if it’s to early to start with Kitshoff. But I like Oosthuizen at 1, he needs to grow into that role. What’s nice is he covers 3 as well, but then we would need another 1 on the bench.
Actually I hope they end up going to the 8 bench with 3 front rows, would sure solve a lot of headaches.
27 Mar 2012, 14:12 pm
Okay since we on this team picking things, here is the ultimate HG team to play against England and to Win the 4 Nations.
1. Gurthro
2. Bismarck
3. Jannie Du P
4. Etsebeth
5. Bekker
6. Potgieter
7. Alberts
8. Strauss
9. Hougaard
10. Lambie
11. Mvovo
12. Steyn
13. JPP
14. Aplon
15. Taute/Viljoen (2 minds)
Bench. Beast, Chili, Kruger, Spies, Kruger, Jantjies, Dejong
No Schalk. His time is over.
No Goosen – you fools are actually dreaming. Never have I seen a more overrated player in a long time. I remember seeing him badly outplayed by an English U21 player called George Ford during the Junior WC. Goosen showed a lack of ballas when the going gets tough that was something chronic.
Morne Steyn was a close one but I decided that he has a little bit too much tunnelvisionitis that precludes him from playing in any style or thinking about rugby in any other style to the Pienk Koeie.
He is a next best candidate along with Mossie.
Definitely, under no circumstances whatsoever should that Munster “great”, Donkey De Villiers be allowed near this team or the Green and Gold.
Bring on the world with this Bok side…
