Grey PE and Michaelhouse recorded their third successive wins on day three of the Grey PE festival on Wednesday.
While most of the top schools, like Paul Roos, SACS, Kearsney and Queen’s, exited the Grey PE festival after day two, there was still some big action on the final day of the tournament.
Grey PE and Maritzburg College, two of the in-form teams during the week, clashed in an exciting feature match. The hosts trailed the KZN school 17-13 at the break, but Grey PE speedsters Sergeal Petersen and Luyanda Odolo’s doubles proved enough to seal the win. Maritzburg College, who dominated in the lineouts and in the midfield battle, could’ve snuck in for a late triumph, but they missed a last-minute penalty.
Michaelhouse confirmed their unbeaten status with a 22-5 win over Daniel Pienaar. Centre Michael Mvelase starred with an individual tally of 15 points via a try, two conversions and two penalties.
Nico Malan, who suffered a disappointing 28-22 defeat to Michaelhouse on day two, returned to winning ways as they downed DHS 27-24. Nico Malan delivered a strong first-half showing to lead 19-3 at the break, but the boys from Durban fought back harder in the second half to narrow the deficit. Nico Malan still managed to hold on for the win, thanks to wing Selwyn Davids, who scored two tries, two conversions and a penalty.
There were also victories for Louis Botha and Hilton over Ithembelihle (26-0) and Muir (29-8) respectively.
