    With all due respect… as one of the once richer and biggest unions in RSA, not being able to ‘hold on to your talent’ is none other than their own fault… I can count on one hand the ‘talent’ that’s been ‘raided’ from the Lions…

    The Lions are a product of their own gross maladministration much like the EC over the years…

    You are kidding me aren’t you… they were only not wooden-spooner’s last year because the Rebels were introduced and they are currently tied at the bottom again!

    This has not been the case of Cheetahs despite being a much smaller union and suffering greater pillaging each year.

    You won’t get any argument from me on the Kings… the chumps cannot even win some second division ****** competition.

    I don’t think anyone will argue even an automatic relegation – but to where? And where do you promote from?

    Surely you get demoted to the ‘lower’ league which in this case is the Currie Cup. And the other team then get’s promoted from that league too.

    Even the Heineken Cup has a qualification from the French Top 14 and Aviva comps for HC promotion.

    It still does not solve the problem discussed here – which is why I say develop a bloody roadmap for the Kings starting by entrenching them in a competition we do not have to beg SANZAR for – the Currie Cup. The invest financially in them to make sure they can sustain themselves for the next 2 years whereby after 3 years they can compete on equal footing against any other Currie Cup playing team for Super Rugby qualification.

    That is a rugby solution.

    @PissAnt(PissAnt)-152: All these noble solutions were at the table YEARS ago but Oregan Hoskins & Basil Haddad chose to bulldoze forth (you know all of this) now 6 years later you want to draw up another “road map” like this is the middle east conflict :roll:

    the problem is NONE of the existing franchises have EVER had to prove themselves anywhere and in the case of the Cheetahs were BANKROLLED by SARU to get their feet off the ground (remember the R2 million the Cheetahs didn’t want to pay back because they assumed it was a stipend from SARU? what was that about entitlement?), not outside of Super Rugby!

    you really think the corrupt scum like regan have any inherent altruistic intentions? the “good of sa rugby” phrase only applies if the “big five” entrench the grip on rugby nothing else.

    the Lions need a “rugby solution” allow them to sort their s(hit out :D .

    Give it to the Kings, let them play. Give them 2 years to build without relegation hanging over them.

    Then see if they can stay up there in the big leaugues. I guess they will fail, and between them and the Lions will play super rugby every second year.

    I think you need to get just a couple of facts straight.

    At the first mention of the Spears ALL franchises were asked to tender an application for a franchise. The Cheetahs actually scored the highest out of all franchises ending first in the bid process and the Spears last.

    Following this, and since then, they tried to manufacture an entry for the Spears into Super Rugby.

    Even the agreement which SA Rugby was taken to court for was an artificially manufactured concept.

    Granted, McKeever had some great ideas and yes, SA Rugby never wanted to support him for whatever reason so there is reason to feel aggrieved about that perhaps.

    But the cards came tumbling down the moment the Spears/Kings wanted to bulldoze their way into Super Rugby using politics, and the ‘Ace’ in the pack of the hub of ‘black rugby in South Africa’. That became their only drawcard and focus on rugby was completely lost.

    My stance on this is very simple; employ a rugby solution that is sustainable and the whole country will support this.

    Mckeever even suggested the bullshit “promotion/relegation” still SARU declined where the “politics” as you say then?

    how much of the agreed budget that SARU was to assist the Spears with actually materialised? but they had the money to buy out the feeder unions and pay lawyers.

    Artificial in the sense it was politically motivated. SA Rugby spent R10-mil on the Spears if memory serves. And a lot more killing them.

    I was not part of the negotiations so I cannot tell you a) why or if the Spears asked for CC participation in 2006 and b) why it was not granted or never considered.

    So those are your questions answered.

    I would again highlight the very important fact to you that when all franchises were asked to tender, the Spears came last effectively ending a ‘fair’ inclusion into Super Rugby.

    Since then, it has been moving from one mess to another trying to create a politically motivated reason for inclusion.

    Why do the Kings not insist on a tender for franchises again (especially since licenses to franchises expire the end of this year)? They won the tender for the Sevens tournament – if they are really ready and that much better than the Lions or ‘deserve’ it more than they do, let them go up against them and everyone else through a franchise tender process…

    Sorry transie that will not fly. You can post every single comment of mine from 2005 onwards on this issue and my stance remains exactly the same.

    I have always supported a franchise in this region, stated in this thread too mind you, but not once did I, or will I support politically motivated entrenchment into any competition. The fact that the Spears/Kings is the hub of black rugby is a bonus, not leverage.

    The comment above referred to SA Rugby failing to support the team or franchise financially, and I will make exactly the same point if it happens in future again (as they will again need help).

    My stance on this has never changed.

    players like matthew taylor-smith, shane gates, who are EP schools products know they are starters or will get an equal chance to play any day!

    this “political leverage” nonsense is a red herring used by those opposed to the SEC getting a franchise to pillory the region. they know it gets the backs of the white population up and lo & behold the inane “chirps” about entitlement etc

    FFS go look at the school rugby in the province you will find that the teams are on MERIT 60 to 70% black already so inevitably SOME black talent will flourish, it is not the sole purpose!

    you are making the claims, it is up to you to prove them! the EC is the “home of black rugby” that is not a mission statement of the Kings, it is a REALITY, a reality that is blatanly evident when you consider that 95% of the Sharks’ players of colour ALL hail from the EC – ndungane, mvovo, sithole, mthembu, vulindlu, loubscher, kayser, tyibilika, bobo.

    Solly has ALWAYS said we want “our boys home” ie dewalt, keegan, kanko, kockott, rory duncan, siya kolisi, tim whitehead, akhona ndungane, andile jho etc.

    so gaan aan with the kak praat :lol:

    it makes for fun reading.
