Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article19 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article3 Apr 2012

@Kiefpant(Kiefpant)-150:
With all due respect… as one of the once richer and biggest unions in RSA, not being able to ‘hold on to your talent’ is none other than their own fault… I can count on one hand the ‘talent’ that’s been ‘raided’ from the Lions…
The Lions are a product of their own gross maladministration much like the EC over the years…
Improvement over the last two years?
You are kidding me aren’t you… they were only not wooden-spooner’s last year because the Rebels were introduced and they are currently tied at the bottom again!
This has not been the case of Cheetahs despite being a much smaller union and suffering greater pillaging each year.
You won’t get any argument from me on the Kings… the chumps cannot even win some second division ****** competition.

@Transformation(Transformation)-103:
I don’t think anyone will argue even an automatic relegation – but to where? And where do you promote from?
Surely you get demoted to the ‘lower’ league which in this case is the Currie Cup. And the other team then get’s promoted from that league too.
Even the Heineken Cup has a qualification from the French Top 14 and Aviva comps for HC promotion.
It still does not solve the problem discussed here – which is why I say develop a bloody roadmap for the Kings starting by entrenching them in a competition we do not have to beg SANZAR for – the Currie Cup. The invest financially in them to make sure they can sustain themselves for the next 2 years whereby after 3 years they can compete on equal footing against any other Currie Cup playing team for Super Rugby qualification.
That is a rugby solution.
4 Apr 2012, 09:14 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-152: All these noble solutions were at the table YEARS ago but Oregan Hoskins & Basil Haddad chose to bulldoze forth (you know all of this) now 6 years later you want to draw up another “road map” like this is the middle east conflict
the problem is NONE of the existing franchises have EVER had to prove themselves anywhere and in the case of the Cheetahs were BANKROLLED by SARU to get their feet off the ground (remember the R2 million the Cheetahs didn’t want to pay back because they assumed it was a stipend from SARU? what was that about entitlement?), not outside of Super Rugby!
you really think the corrupt scum like regan have any inherent altruistic intentions? the “good of sa rugby” phrase only applies if the “big five” entrench the grip on rugby nothing else.
the Lions need a “rugby solution” allow them to sort their s(hit out
.

@Transformation(Transformation)-153:
Give it to the Kings, let them play. Give them 2 years to build without relegation hanging over them.
Then see if they can stay up there in the big leaugues. I guess they will fail, and between them and the Lions will play super rugby every second year.
Do it!

You Gen-Y Xhosa’s really are obsessed with a bit of bum-fun eh?
You can huff and puff all you like little man… the Kings have NEVER qualified for the lowly Currie Cup and until they do they’re a joke and deserve sweet fanny Adams in any ‘relegation/promotion’ format you continually espouse!
Even Tony MCeever has come to his senses!

@Transformation(Transformation)-153:
I think you need to get just a couple of facts straight.
At the first mention of the Spears ALL franchises were asked to tender an application for a franchise. The Cheetahs actually scored the highest out of all franchises ending first in the bid process and the Spears last.
Following this, and since then, they tried to manufacture an entry for the Spears into Super Rugby.
Even the agreement which SA Rugby was taken to court for was an artificially manufactured concept.
Granted, McKeever had some great ideas and yes, SA Rugby never wanted to support him for whatever reason so there is reason to feel aggrieved about that perhaps.
But the cards came tumbling down the moment the Spears/Kings wanted to bulldoze their way into Super Rugby using politics, and the ‘Ace’ in the pack of the hub of ‘black rugby in South Africa’. That became their only drawcard and focus on rugby was completely lost.
My stance on this is very simple; employ a rugby solution that is sustainable and the whole country will support this.
4 Apr 2012, 10:21 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-158:
elaborate on “artificially manufactured concept.”. is your concept a “genuinely manufactured concept”?
why were the Spear not allowed to play Currie Cup in ’06?
Mckeever even suggested the bullshit “promotion/relegation” still SARU declined where the “politics” as you say then?
how much of the agreed budget that SARU was to assist the Spears with actually materialised? but they had the money to buy out the feeder unions and pay lawyers.

@PissAnt(PissAnt)-152: different stance 6 year later

Hmmm,
That is a load of kak.
To compare them to the Cheetahs is rich.
The Cheetahs has been an established team for decades, and the fact that they did not have S14 status means nothing.
They had players, they had a coach, they had a world class stadium, history, money, etc.
The Spears started from nothing – zilch – nada.
Their (Cheetahs) main sponsor Vodacom is pumping R50-mil into the franchise over 5 years alone.
As for the Spears, it was in Saru’s mandate to help secure sponsors for them – they did not.
The Spears operating budget for 2006 was R12-mil – a budget Haddad specifically was aware of – they are still well short of that.
The Spears, on their own, secured an apparel sponsor and a media sponsor.
As for a title sponsor – how can you expect any business to be interested in them when Saru does not even recognise them or give them any games (CC) and shaft them left right and center.
Your views are provincialistic and for your sake I hope the Cats/Lions improves their performance in 2007 because another 2006 will see more than people just laughing at them.
4 Apr 2012, 10:29 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-159:
Artificial in the sense it was politically motivated. SA Rugby spent R10-mil on the Spears if memory serves. And a lot more killing them.
I was not part of the negotiations so I cannot tell you a) why or if the Spears asked for CC participation in 2006 and b) why it was not granted or never considered.
So those are your questions answered.
I would again highlight the very important fact to you that when all franchises were asked to tender, the Spears came last effectively ending a ‘fair’ inclusion into Super Rugby.
Since then, it has been moving from one mess to another trying to create a politically motivated reason for inclusion.
Why do the Kings not insist on a tender for franchises again (especially since licenses to franchises expire the end of this year)? They won the tender for the Sevens tournament – if they are really ready and that much better than the Lions or ‘deserve’ it more than they do, let them go up against them and everyone else through a franchise tender process…

@Transformation(Transformation)-160:
Different stance?
Sorry transie that will not fly. You can post every single comment of mine from 2005 onwards on this issue and my stance remains exactly the same.
I have always supported a franchise in this region, stated in this thread too mind you, but not once did I, or will I support politically motivated entrenchment into any competition. The fact that the Spears/Kings is the hub of black rugby is a bonus, not leverage.
The comment above referred to SA Rugby failing to support the team or franchise financially, and I will make exactly the same point if it happens in future again (as they will again need help).
My stance on this has never changed.
4 Apr 2012, 10:43 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-162: where has it been made “leverage”?
4 Apr 2012, 10:54 am
@PissAnt(PissAnt)-161: let them open up the tenders then and we have a transparent process adjudicated by independent auditors.
the way some unions are in debt i bet you the Kings can take them!

@the artist formerly known as gunther(gunther)-170: you can chirp, because we’re not talking rugby, only administration of rugby
4 Apr 2012, 12:21 pm
I’ll chirp you whenver I want boy.
Rugby or admistration of rugby you still talk out yer bumhole.
Nobody falls for your guff my little body language expert.
However much you gaan on about skillsets yadayadam
4 Apr 2012, 12:26 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-171: nowhere has it been used as leverage…it is only a bonus…go take a look at the Kings & Border rugby academies, there’s no BIAS to include only “hordes” of black players!
players like matthew taylor-smith, shane gates, who are EP schools products know they are starters or will get an equal chance to play any day!
this “political leverage” nonsense is a red herring used by those opposed to the SEC getting a franchise to pillory the region. they know it gets the backs of the white population up and lo & behold the inane “chirps” about entitlement etc
FFS go look at the school rugby in the province you will find that the teams are on MERIT 60 to 70% black already so inevitably SOME black talent will flourish, it is not the sole purpose!
4 Apr 2012, 12:27 pm
Sorry.
Meant to say my boy.
That came across as overly harsh.
Apologies Floyd.

As for disparaging other bloggers that’s farking rich coming from you.
You are not to be taken seriously.
4 Apr 2012, 12:45 pm
During the pitch & woo phase all we heard about was the 200 000 rugby impis waiting to be liberated from the shackles of their dusty hillside pitches. Now it’s a “bonus” if any of them see game time? Smoke and fcken mirrors abound in the friendly city.
4 Apr 2012, 14:26 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-180: look i don’t have to convince you of anything
you are making the claims, it is up to you to prove them! the EC is the “home of black rugby” that is not a mission statement of the Kings, it is a REALITY, a reality that is blatanly evident when you consider that 95% of the Sharks’ players of colour ALL hail from the EC – ndungane, mvovo, sithole, mthembu, vulindlu, loubscher, kayser, tyibilika, bobo.
Solly has ALWAYS said we want “our boys home” ie dewalt, keegan, kanko, kockott, rory duncan, siya kolisi, tim whitehead, akhona ndungane, andile jho etc.
so gaan aan with the kak praat
it makes for fun reading.
