Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article19 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article3 Apr 2012

@jackbill(jackbill)-1:
WP Nel has ‘sort of’ committed himself to playing for Scotland, once he qualifies. He’s joining Edinburgh after this SR season finishes.
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-5:
He’s playing in Europe somewhere.
3 Apr 2012, 07:40 am
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-6: I think he is playing for Bayonne. Dude i was looking for you this past few weeks. You are killing it on Fox!
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-3: Yes agree those players still have something to offer. I would trial them in the series against England to see what they got.
3 Apr 2012, 07:40 am
WP Nel might be the 1st scottish player that don’t speak english
3 Apr 2012, 07:44 am

What happened to Juan Smith? Did he retire from test rugby? Not sure what they are going to do about a Bok captain. Fourie DuP to make comeback as our captain fantastic ala John Smit? We all know how that story ended.

@Sasuke(Sasuke)-7:
Yeah not going too bad. I dropped Adam Thomson this past weekend, right before he scored by far the most (fantasy) points by any player this season
but luckily I had Coenie who then scored almost as many.
3 Apr 2012, 08:04 am
RugbyGuru, quite a few non-English speaking Saffas playing for England these days…
3 Apr 2012, 08:09 am
@hendrikp(hendrikp)-14: lol yes I saw that. I thought I had you beat after I got that points from Thompson and you had him on the bench. I brought Coenie into my team asap.
3 Apr 2012, 08:20 am
@kwas(kwas)-13: Naka said yesterday they’re giving Juan 2 more weeks to recover. He should play in 2 weeks. Since there is a bye somewhere in between, that should mean good news.
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-8: Hah. The Scots love anyone who speaks English completely different from Englishmen. The more slang and accent, the better!
3 Apr 2012, 08:38 am
Thanks,Bouts. Juan probably the only player respected by both older and younger generations of Bok players. Just keep Fourie Dup away from the captaincy.

@kwas(kwas)-18:
fdp by all accounts is having a blinder of a season in japan and in the words of his coach (one eddie jones) is/has been the difference between his team being pretenders and contenders.. as well his stated view that fdp has a lot to offer the boks.
juan smith is a great player provided he gets back to his 2007 form and of course has been out of competitive level rugby fo a very long time so this wont be an easy thing to do, also remember his age. i do however hope the best for him.

Happy birthday, Dawn. Are you sober?
3 Apr 2012, 09:04 am
Bakkies no offence but rugby in Japan is not even Vodacom Cup standard!!
3 Apr 2012, 09:08 am
Dawn, don’t be rude I was the 1st to wish you well. Such a fiesty cougar
just remember the more birthdays you have the longer you live
3 Apr 2012, 09:12 am
@houston, we have a problem…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-24:
Juan Smith turns 31 this year. I would like to see him move to lock during the latter stages of his career. I think it would prolong his rugby career.
I guess it’s all up to the player himself. We have so many options at lock in the country, but they’re all inexperience at Bok level. it would be nice to have a guy with his experience in the second row to guide the youngsters coming through.
3 Apr 2012, 09:12 am
Whenever emerging talent is mentioned Johann Sadie is always listed. I am a Bulls supporter but i can seriously not see what the hype is about. He is a good player but is he a Bok contender at this stage? I was much more impressed with young Venter and JJ E was a better buy for the Bulls than JS.
3 Apr 2012, 09:15 am
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-4:
Earnst Joubert will soon be playing for England too. He becomes eligible in June and has said he would love to play for them.

@>^..^< katman(katman)-29:
Completely!
3 Apr 2012, 09:15 am
@ pakslae, agree he played lock at junior level. I don’t think his age is the problem, simon shaw was one of the oldest players when the B&I lions toured SA but was the best forward.
If juan can gain his form and “hunger” for test rugby back then I will always have him in my starting team
3 Apr 2012, 09:16 am
@Dawn(Dawn)-35: I need to go into town in the next hour. Want me to drop off a little celebratory drink for you?
3 Apr 2012, 09:17 am
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-31:
Please.
Dont try and soft soap me now.
You called me old woman.
Underside of a maggot you are.
3 Apr 2012, 09:18 am
@>^..^< katman(katman)-37:
I never drink during daylight hours!
3 Apr 2012, 09:19 am
I said “old lady” if you going to take offense to that then good for you
3 Apr 2012, 09:22 am
@Beertjie(Beertjie)-33: how many games has sadie played for the bulls? effectively one game if you put the minutes he’s been on the field in either a pink or blue jersey.
heyneke meyer created the hype and you know some here don’t like to think for themselves so sadie always makes everyone’s fantasy bok teams based on nothing but hype & future promise.
3 Apr 2012, 09:22 am
@NoRugbyGuru_0_(RugbyGuru_0_)-40:
Good grief you really are dof if you think it’s OK to call someone “old lady” unless it’s your geriatric aunt.
3 Apr 2012, 09:25 am
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-30:
come on mauler, i think its higher than vc and is probably on par with cc first division at the least and maybe even aspects of cc premier division.
@pakslae(pakslae)-32:
will always be a huge juan smith fan and not just because of his playing abilities but also his character as a person.
ja, he could lock or maybe play a bench role as a loosie and be used sparingly…still will make an inpact imo.
3 Apr 2012, 09:25 am
Happy birthday Dawn.
3 Apr 2012, 09:26 am
@Transformation(Transformation)-41:
Sadie had one good game against the blues last year and thats it.
Doesnt mean he will not be a good player going forward, but he is not special at the moment.
And dont forget the hype started in Stormer country.
3 Apr 2012, 09:27 am
@Dawn(Dawn)-28:
(cat sounds, cat sounds..!..claw..scratch..claw..!..)
3 Apr 2012, 09:28 am
@Mr Black(Mr Black)-45:
Anyway, at the rate that the Stormers backs are scoring tries at the moment Sadie might be a superstar in their eyes.
3 Apr 2012, 09:29 am
@houston, we have a problem…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-46:
Indeed.
As we say where I come from, he is the “Three D’s”
Dik, dom en dwars.
