Tough field set for Kearsney Festival

The Kearsney Easter Festival will host some of South Africa’s strongest schools over the long weekend.

The festival has quickly grown into one of the most prestigious schoolboy events this time of year. And if you look at the fixture list for the 2012 schedule, you’d realise why.

Some of the top schools from the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng will make the trip to KZN this week, which will see some major clashes. Day one will see Grey Bloem take on Paarl Gym, Paul Roos tackle a tough Queen’s outfit and Glenwood face Monument. On day two, Paul Roos challenge Monnas and Affies duel Gimmies. On the third and final day, hosts Kearsney line up against Affies and Grey Bloem come up against Monnas.

South African Test referee Craig Joubert, who overlooked the 2011 World Cup final, will officiate a couple of matches at the festival.

Tournament organisor Taff Green believes this will be one of the biggest festivals in Kearsney’s history.

‘We have an incredible wealth of talent in the participating schools this year with most teams being placed in top 20 lists in the country,’ Green told Schoolboy Derby. ‘Rugby has become a realistic career opportunity for many and a festival such as this is an ideal springboard for players to show their skill and flair for the game. It also provides obvious benefits to rugby in the province.’

There will also be a special closing ceremony on day three, which will see some of the top performers rewarded with bursaries and offers to study at Varsity College and to attend the Sharks Academy.
