Duane Vermeulen is out of the June Tests. Stormers strong man Duane Vermeulen returned home from the Stormers Super Rugby tour because of injury and conservatively won't play again until July. It could be that he is out for the remainder of the Super Rugby season as well because of knee ligament damage. Stormers loose-forward Rynhardt Elstadt is also out for at least six weeks as the Cape-based franchise's season went from bad to worse in Sydney. Vermeulen, Meyer's first choice No 8, will be nursed back to action for the Rugby Championship in August. His injury means a likely Bok start ... Read Article19 May 2013
GREGOR PAUL, in the Herald on Sunday, writes world rugby will get its integrated season after the 2015 World Cup and Super Rugby won't break to accommodate an international window. Super Rugby will shift to a March start and won't break for test matches, the June window will be shifted to July and all players will have a 14 to 16-week off-season. Other innovative plans are being discussed, such as building a world series of tests in years that fall between the World Cup and British Lions tours. The revolution that All Black coach Steve Hansen called for last week is coming. The players ... Read Article25 Apr 2013
Jan Serfontein, the player of last year's under 20 World Championship, will head the baby Boks defence in France. Serfontein and Kings wing Sergeal Petersen are two Super Rugby regulars to make Dawie Theron's squad and brilliant flyhalf Handre Pollard is another to play in a second successive tournament. Theron's squad lost a three-match series 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina. Serfontein, Petersen and Western Province's Cheslin Kolbe did not play in those matches. Bulls loose forward Ruan Steenkamp is captain. Serfontein and Pollard are the only two squad members from last year's ... Read Article14 May 2013
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has selected several uncapped Blues players in his training group. Hansen confirmed 38 names and this included many from the potent Blues backline. The Highlanders, despite only winning one match in this year's Super Rugby competition, have six players in the group. An obvious area of weakness is at hooker where Hansen has selected veterans Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu and Canes Dane Coles. Options are limited and it certainly is a concern for New Zealanders. No overseas-based players were considered, as it is NZRFU policy. Among the uncapped players ... Read Article15 May 2013
French coach Philipe Saint-Andre has included three South African-born players for the three-Test series against the All Blacks in New Zealand. Racing Metro flank Bernard le Roux and Clermont prop Daniel Kotze join Antonie Claassen in a squad that includes eight new caps. Fijian-born Clermont winger Noa Nakaitaci is among the newcomers. Saint-Andre has rested flyhalf Francois Trinh-Duc, but included Toulon's Frederic Michalak. France play world champions New Zealand on June 8, 15 and 22 in Auckland, Hamilton and New Plymouth respectively. French super club Toulon's foreign dominance ... Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article4 Apr 2012

@rangerman(rangerman)-144:
What is interesting is he is doing that with one of the kakkest 9′s around, Tewis… Imagine what Goosen could do with a Hougaard…
@race of tan(race of tan)-145:
I will still start Morne for now and I am not getting too excited about the stats.
What it does show me quite clearly is this lad has an all-round game which is above average – and that is exciting – it’s been a while since we had one of those in a 10 jersey.
4 Apr 2012, 13:47 pm
So this might be the Bok side to face England then…

4 Apr 2012, 13:48 pm
Actually Goosen is looking very good with van Zyl at 9!!
4 Apr 2012, 13:50 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-149: I am not convinced. If he is standing over the ball I do not have the same confidence as with Steyn or Goosen. Goosen’s stats will be even better if he does not take on the most ridiculous kicks.
BUT, Steyn also had weaknesses with his goalkicking, so Lambie may become a very good goalkicker, but by that time all of you will defend Goosen against NZ bloggers when compared with Carter.
4 Apr 2012, 13:53 pm
I actually think Goosen is the real deal but i also think Lambie is getting better!! Specially his goal kicking…
4 Apr 2012, 13:54 pm
@ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-153: JdV is probably the worst centre at this stage. I defended him in the past, but he has really slowed down and shows no contact skills. To put him at 13 will not be a good idea.
4 Apr 2012, 13:56 pm
Goosen is the real deal No.10 if they don’t grab the opportunity to blood the kid now the latent talent will stagnate and go dormant.. and then satrs the inevitable lack of confidence downswing.. Same as Mcqueen did with Larkham, and Woodward did with Wilkinson, Goosen must get chucked into the deep end sink or swim now…
Lambie is a much better back stop utility either off bench or at 15..
4 Apr 2012, 13:57 pm
@ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-153:
I’m wondering if, due to the S15 schedule, Meyer might decide to include FdP and Jaques against England.
4 Apr 2012, 13:59 pm
JdV still got plenty to offer which he’ll continue to prove his detractors wrong.. so far under JdV Stormers are winning and that in itself says enough for both his overall leadership and back line defensive management capabilities, beside the fact that he probable has had more direct gain line breaching plays than most saffa backs this year already..
4 Apr 2012, 14:00 pm
Van Awswegen not the real deal anymore??
4 Apr 2012, 14:02 pm
Heyneke don’t need FdP.. he got Hougaard and plenty scrumhalf backup.. and he’s got JdV.. best captaincy material this country has by far.. way better than FdP in leadership mindset by light years..
4 Apr 2012, 14:04 pm
Van Aswegen is injured .. you obviously don’t read the blogging news..
and beside what kind ignoramus moron are you in any event? dumb idiot.!
4 Apr 2012, 14:04 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-163: Where does the backline play of the Stormers go wrong? It is either JdV, JdJ or both. If Heyneke picks JdV and JdJ the Boks will struggle even more.
4 Apr 2012, 14:05 pm
@Horings(Horings)-143:
i haven’t excluded them at all…
just said i wouldn’t use them against the poms… and would phase them in after that…
lambie is a quality player IMO… and has the temperament that few rugby players possess… also not too shabby with his kicking…
i would let goosen finish the super season before phasing him in… he is excellent no doubt… but has done a couple of silly things too… such as kicking for touch and shoving beauden barrett… not big issues either of them alone… but would suggest to me he needs more time to settle in before plutting him in the cauldron of test rugby…
he’s also been knocked out already on the field… twice… worrying for someone so young… i’d rather not rush him in and see him get maimed… he’s young… has time on his side… we have other excellent flyhalves… why rush this kid…?
same, to a lesser extent, for jantjies…
yes… lambie is a good option at 15 or 10… but no harm in all 3 contesting the 10 jersey though going forwards…
4 Apr 2012, 14:09 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-161: no, he hasnt.
and like last year, his play doesnt lead to tries now does it?
4 Apr 2012, 14:09 pm
@race of tan(race of tan)-135: Think you spot on. Just can’t see Meyer trying out new players at that stage. Will go with who played together in the world cup. Those players knows each others game well.
Pity cause think Hougaard should be starting, but against England especially in the first game think he will go with who you said and take no chances, without having much time with players.

speaking of centres…
Johannesburg – A South African boxing promoter confirms talks have been held with Sonny Bill Williams’s agent for a fight that would clash with the All Blacks’ series against Ireland. Golden Gloves representative and former world champion Brian Mitchell was quoted as stating that his group has been speaking to Williams’s agent Khoder Nasser who was in Cape Town last week, about a fight on June 16. Williams, currently playing for the Chiefs in Super Rugby, may be unavailable for the All Blacks’ Tests against Ireland if a proposal to fight in South African is accepted. That date is in the middle of the All Blacks’ three-Test series against Ireland and it seems unlikely new All Blacks coach Steve Hansen would allow Williams to be available for only part of that Test window. It is also likely that Williams would want time off to prepare for such a bout – especially if he is matched against an opponent that can last more than a couple of rounds. The Chiefs’ Super Rugby campaign will take a break during June before cranking-up again in August. It has been stated that Williams has shown interest in the fight with promoters hoping to enter him in the cruiserweight division – a drop down from the heavyweight division he usually fights in. The winner of the cruiserweight tournament could win around R500 000. It has been speculated that Williams’s opponent could be South African Danie Venter. Given the number of rumours about Williams’s future, and strong hints he will sign with NRL club the Sydney Roosters after his contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union expires at the end of this year, the timing of this proposed bout could suggest he has lost interest in furthering his All Blacks career. If the fight went ahead it could mean Hansen may not want Williams to be part of his plans as be rebuilds for the future and ignore him for the Rugby Championship (old Tri-Nations) campaign and the northern hemisphere tour later in the year. Boxing is understood to earn a large chunk of Williams’s salary and these recent negotiations again suggest how much Nasser wants his client to corner this part of the sports entertainment market.

Has Percy been drinking (hic)?
Jean on the wing? Good Lord. He’d make my bench… just
4 Apr 2012, 14:15 pm
Ignoramous!! Hahaha!! So what if he is injured!! You have been punting him all the time!! Tw at!!!
4 Apr 2012, 14:15 pm
Stormers were switching JdV and JdJ between 12 and 13 on certain plays, often JdJ would be brought into the crash ball at inside center with JdV further out,, this is my preferable role for both players, JdJ closer to the action JdV further out, though on defense they are both effective.
For Boks we got too many other options like Steyn, JPP, JdJ, Fourie, JdV all vying for the center positions.. beside the likes of Venter, Sadie, Engelbrecht, Ebersohn, Taute to consider.
But as captaincy capabilities and overall back line and overall team leadership and management go, JdV is head and shoulders best captain in the country.. by some distance.. way better than FdP could ever be.. or anyone else currently for that matter.
4 Apr 2012, 14:16 pm
@THE MAULER(THE MAULER)-157: Yes Lambie’s goal kicking has been excellent this S15 of late. Such a pity he picked up a injury right now. Think though he will be ready to play against the Blues.
4 Apr 2012, 14:17 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-142: JPP has all the goods to do the switch permanently like Umaga for the AB’s.
Why the hell not have a 100kg + outside centre with top end speed faster than anyone on a rugby field and the ability to smash his opposition in defence…
Its been great for his game too – he can’t switch off there, like he sometimes can do on the wing… His boot has been quite good too – clearing and little roll-throughs on attack…
I can’t wait to see him have the opportunity to partner F Steyn in the midfield – POTENT!
4 Apr 2012, 14:18 pm
if Van Aswegen was not injured I would still punt him as a very potentially creative and capable No. 10 – twatass idiot…. fact is he is injured.. and likewise I was one the first to punt Johann Goosen.. long before the rest of some you Johnny come lately moron finally wiped the sleep from your dreary bewildered eyesight.
4 Apr 2012, 14:24 pm
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-174: Agree totally. JPP is doing superb at outside centre. Big/Strong/Fast and potent in defence. Has it all really.
4 Apr 2012, 14:26 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-161: JDV Bok Captain…? FFS, have another beetroot juice… or chomp some spinach crackling or whatever other bunny hugging vege nonsense you reckon satisfies your food craving or anti-succulent great tasting meat conscience…
When the chips are down, JdV has always been one of the players who drops head and puts tail between legs in Green and Gold… Now you want him to Captain by virtue of an undeserved ref enabled 5 game lucky streak on home turf?
Come now… He aint got the ballas to be Captain…
4 Apr 2012, 14:27 pm
@ashampoopaloo(joel1yahoo)-175: You sir, are a moegoe of the highest order. Rarely do you find a man who knows so little and yet speaks so much.
And Van Aswegen is not even in the third tier of flyhalfs in SA. He’s down there with Earl Rose and Monty Dumond. No amount of twatassery and fuckadilification will change this.
4 Apr 2012, 14:28 pm
Beetroot juice!!!! Hahahahaha live it!!
4 Apr 2012, 14:30 pm
Van Aswegen is ok… Never a bok!!!
4 Apr 2012, 14:33 pm
@Puma(Puma)-176: I would have enjoyed seeing him turn on the afterburners if that pass from Bismarck was not judged forward during the game against the Brumbies…
He had a wing in front of him about 5m to his right, and another player about 2m to his left…
It would have been glorious…. big farken loping strides seemingly in slomo while the poor opposition look like they’re wading in quicksand…
4 Apr 2012, 14:38 pm
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-181: Would have been awesome.
4 Apr 2012, 14:41 pm
You were slso “first” to punt Sadie… At the moment he looks like another Jaco Pretorius…
4 Apr 2012, 14:48 pm
@>^..^< katman(katman)-178:
From what I have seen of him Gary has all the potential to be at least the equal of Jantjes and Lambie. He is just incrediblky unlucky with injuries and might never realise his true potential.
For me:
First Tier : Goosen
Second tier:
Lambie, Jantjes, van Aswegen
Thirt tier:
Morne Steyn, Butch James (on current form- previously he was second tier)
Fourth tier
PeterGrant, Burton Francis,

How about it…

Steyn is a MUST for SA Rugby. Stands out as individual. However, Jean d V is the no 12 in the seat for very good reasons. The boks do not consist of only 15 players. Steyn is a tremendous asset to Boks at age 24; international experience; versatality and immense talent. Thumbs up to Coach Heyneke for his part in Steyns return as well as the wise ones in Shark country

I reckon that fellow from the Cheetahs, Andries Strauss looks very promising, he should definitely be in the mix at centre.
But a 95kg Fransie has to play at inside (emphasis on the 95kg’s)
4 Apr 2012, 17:08 pm
@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-194: you think this can beat Lancaster’s England>
4 Apr 2012, 17:12 pm
@mshiniwami(mshiniwami)-194: Cilliers is not a good enough scrummager. Strauss is a distinct third behind Bismark and Chiliboy. And if Fourie is available, I’d play him ahead of JPP at 13. Otherwise, that’s a very good side.
4 Apr 2012, 17:15 pm
@Jeraldjay(Jeraldjay)-195: well mark steele will have to condition him more than he did for both bosman & joubert because @ the wc steyn was 110kg.
dries strauss???? hehehe his ceiling is currie cup mate, hard worker but that’s all. he was hondkak against the barbarians.

I’m sure your mate Wayne Smith agree.
