Saints build on proud heritage
4 Apr 2012
The 29th St Stithians Easter Festival will be the school’s biggest sporting event ever.
Rugby has been the main feature at the festival over the years and hockey was eventually added to the line-up too. Now in the 2012 schedule, boys’ tennis and netball will be included to make this one of the biggest multi-code events in South African school sport. Tournament marketing director Megan van der Poll say over 30 000 spectators are expected.
‘On a good weekend with great weather, we usually see between 15 000 and 30 000 fans turn out to support the teams. With boys’ tennis and netball on show for the first time this year, there will be a wider sporting platform available, so more supporters should pull through,’ Van der Poll told Schoolboy Derby. ‘We also have exciting sponsors on board, and we are planning big entertainment on and off the field over the three days.’
There is a competitive pool of rugby teams that will participate. Noord-Kaap and Boland Landbou will be the major visiting schools, while hosts St Stithians will also provide a challenge as they’ve put together a strong team this year. There will also be a Standard Bank Invitational XV, which consists of players from disadvantaged schools on the West Coast.
The major clashes will see St Stithians take on Noord-Kaap and Boland Landbou face Helpmekaar on day one. St Stithians then tackle Helpemekaar and Noord-Kaap are up against Northwood on day two. The third and final day will finish with the Noord-Kaap-Helpmekaar and St Stithians-Kingswood clashes.
