Gimmies break Grey Bloem’s winning streak

Paarl Gym gave Grey Bloem their first defeat since 2009 during day one of the Kearsney Easter Festival on Thursday.

Gimmies picked up the surprise result of the opening day as they eased to a 45-29 romp of the Bloemfontein school. The last time Grey College suffered a loss was a 9-3 defeat to Paul Roos in Stellenbosch three years ago.

Paul Roos also impressed as they thrashed Queen’s 43-20 – the latter grabbed a couple of late scores to add respectability to the overall tally.

SA Schools prop Pierre Schoeman scored a hat-trick in Affies’ 19-15 win over EG Jansen, while Glenwood held on for a close 20-17 triumph over Monument, who finished the match strongly. There were also tight wins for hosts Kearsney and Dale over Selborne (10-5) and Westville (11-10) respectively.

South African Test referee Craig Joubert, who officiated the Paarl Gym-Grey Bloem clash and watched the other matches, was very impressed with the talent on display.

‘The standard of our country’s schoolboy rugby astounds me every year. These teams and players at the Kearsney Easter Festival are very, very talented,’ Joubert told Schoolboy Derby.

‘Grey Bloem have a good team every year, and this side wasn’t bad. They just came up against a very strong Paarl Gym outfit. Gimmies have a strong pack this year and are backed with a devastating backline. I think Grey Bloem would rue kicking the ball too much to the Paarl Gym backs, who really punished them.

‘The players who stood out for me were the Paarl Gym lock JD Shickerling, who’s a strong boy and an effective ball carrier, flyhalf Handre Pollard, who led the team really well, and inside centre Altus Momsen, who ran off the No 10 very well.’

Day two resumes on Saturday, with the highlight match seeing Affies tackle Paarl Gym.
