Taylor out, Carter to kick for Saders

Dan Carter will resume goal-kicking responsibilities after Tom Taylor was dropped from the Crusaders’ run-on side to face the Bulls.

Taylor kicked well against the Lions last weekend but loses his spot in midfield to Ryan Crotty in the only change to the Saders’ starting line-up. Taylor will play from the bench at Loftus on Saturday.

Carter has not kicked at goal in a match since the 2011 World Cup. He said he is still building his confidence and coach Todd Blackadder echoed those thoughts.

‘We have seen through his actions this week that he is ready. I think last week it was a bit like having a toe in the water,’ Blackadder said.

‘Everyone expects big things from him but he is just normal, he just needed time in the saddle and to get a feel for things again. He probably got a good pass mark, but he is looking sharp this week.’

Crusaders - 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 Zac Guildford, 10 Dan Carter, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Kieran Read (c), 7 Matt Todd, 6 George Whitelock, 5 Sam Whitelock, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Subs: 16 Quentin MacDonald, 17 Ben Franks, 18 Tom Donnelly, 19 Luke Whitelock, 20 Willi Heinz, 21 Tom Taylor, 22 Tom Marshall.

Tom Taylor, the son of Warwick Taylor, the 1st guy to offload in the tackle in the early 80s at 12

His offload was unique in that he would lift both arms and then offload; not sure whether you can do it in today’s game as the defence a lot more relentless and aggressive

Those Canterbury teams of the early 80s that Taylor was on turned out to produce some interesting coaches. Wayne Smith was at first-five, Taylor at second five, and Robbie Deans at fullback. Steve Hansen also played in that midfield.
