Waterkloof kicked a late penalty to beat Florida 16-14 during day two of the St John’s Festival on Saturday.
The final match of the day was a repeat of the 2011 Beeld Trophy final, which saw Klofies ease to a 41-21 victory last year. With Klofies also downing Florida 42-22 in March, the former were big favourites to claim a hat-trick of victories over their Gauteng rivals.
However, Florida made it a closely-contested affair and scored a try five minutes from the final whistle to lead 14-13 at the death. Florida’s ill-discipline cost them, though, as Waterkloof snatched the win with a last-gasp three-pointer from right in front of the posts.
In other results, Paarl Boys’ eased to a 30-8 win over Nelspruit. There were also triumphs for Marais Viljoen, Daniel Pienaar, the Lions invitational XV and hosts St John’s.
Tournament organiser Adi Norris said over 10 000 fans showed up to support a successful second day.
‘The massive crowd really made the occasion special, as all the matches were tight games,’ Norris told Schoolboy Derby. ‘The skills of the players were outstanding and it was nice to see some late drama. The highlight of the day was the close game between Waterkloof and Florida.
‘Florida were unlucky as both teams had opportunities to seal the win. Waterkloof held the lead intil Florida scored, and looked like they slipped when it mattered most.
‘Everybody is looking forward to an exciting day three. The big match will be between Watekloof and Paarl Boys’ – who are probably the two in-form teams at the festival.’
