Clermont dump Sarries out of Euro Cup
8 Apr 2012
Clermont recorded a 22-3 win over Saracens at Vicarage Road to book their place in the European Cup semi-finals.
Fullback Lee Byrne scored a try while flyhalf Brock James (who replaced the injured David Skrela early in the match) contributed 17 points via the boot (a conversion, four penalties and a drop goal) to seal the convincing win for the French club.
Saracens, who had seven Saffas in their match 22, could only manage an Owen Farrell penalty in the first half in a poor performance at home.
In Sunday’s other quarter-final fixture, scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar slotted 14 points from the kicking tee (four penalties and a conversion) to help Ulster to a 22-16 win over Pro12 defending champions Munster. Wing Craig Giloy also crossed the chalk and flyhalf Ian Humphreys added a drop goal for the victors.
The European Cup semi-finals will see Clermont host Leicester, while Edinburgh will face Ulster. Both play-offs are scheduled for 28 April.

“seven Saffas in their match 22″
great for England player development
and I am sad to hear of WP Nel departure for scotland. Tragic, Most destructive tighthead IMO playing in Super rugby. Should be the Bok 3.

Of the 7 SAs:
Two capped by Boks
Three capped England
One now (at 31) just declared for England (Ernst Joubert)
And Justin Melck – not good enough for Province CC squad.
Have your say
