UCT thrashed CUT 60-21 in the Varsity Cup promotion-relegation play-off in Pretoria on Monday.
UCT endured a nightmare title-defending Varsity Cup campaign this season, as the champions finished second last on the overall log after losing five of their seven league fixtures. They also drew 29-29 against Pukke in Cape Town, while their only win came against hapless TUT (a 66-2 drubbing in Tshwane).
This saw their Varsity Cup place come under threat as they had to face off against Varsity Shield losing finalists CUT for their place in next year’s competition. However, Ikeys managed to make light work of their Bloemfontein counterparts at Tuks Rugby Stadium, which was one of the curtain-raisers for the Varsity Cup final between Tuks and Maties.
UCT ran in nine tries in the convincing win, while CUT could only score three tries in reply.
Ikeys lock Levi Odendaal was the man of the moment as he grabbed a hat-trick. Wing Mark Winter also completed a brace, while scrumhalf Liam Slatem, prop Wesley Chetty, wing Damian de Allende and fullback Dillyn Leyds also crossed the chalk for the students from the Cape. Flyhalf Nick Holton added five conversions.
CUT secured consolation scores via wing Alec Mhlanga, lock Gavin Annandale and inside centre Leon Pretorius.
