Crusaders cleared of foul play

Crusaders cleared of foul play

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has demanded an apology from the Bulls after eye-gouging allegations against his team couldn’t be substantiated by the Super Rugby citing commissioner.

Bulls forwards Chiliboy Ralepelle and Flip van der Merwe complained to referee Jaco Peyper that they had been eye-gouged during their match in Pretoria, won 32-30 by the Bulls. Peyper used a white card to refer the incidents to the citing commissioner.

According to reports in New Zealand, the commissioner has reviewed the video footage of the incidents in question and found the Crusaders not guilty.

‘The citing commissioner has reviewed it and after that review there was nothing in the video footage that would point to the allegation being substantiated,’ Sanzar chief executive Greg Peters said.

‘The citing commissioner also found it interesting that the Bulls did not follow through with a complaint within the four-hour window after the game.’

After the game, Blackadder said he was ‘bemused’ at the allegations and demanded an apology if they were found to be incorrect. Following the citing commissioner’s ruling and after looking at the footage, the Crusaders coach wonders why the Bulls would have made such claims.

‘The first one with Chiliboy, you would expect that the player would come out of the breakdown holding his eye, but he certainly didn’t. I wonder whether it was a negative ploy.’

Captain Kieran Read also said that he was disappointed with the Bulls for accusing the Crusaders of such tactics.

‘Initially I was really surprised at the allegations,’ he said. ‘It has now come out that there’s no case to answer.

‘It’s a kick in the guts to us because we’re men of integrity and it’s no surprise that it’s turned out the way it has.’

@ShaunSwindon(Karma-zaf)-3: Go and count the shoulder charges in the Sharks/Hurricanes game. Hurricanes 11 Sharks5. Not a single penalty against the Hurricanes.JdP was seen ,but Taylor scored a try and nothing came of that one. That gives 16 incidents where Bakkies would have either been cited or penalized. Double standards! Brad Thorn just as “dirty”as Bakkies . NEVER properly penalized.
And what is this “demanding an apology” . If it proves to be wrong, let it go. It was never proven that Bakkies eye gouged Cannon, yet he got suspended(I think it was Cannon).

I hope the accusers have proof or it is just as likely one of the cheating mongrels from their own team did it. Let’s face it the Bulls have long standing form in this area.

and bulls players aren’t the sort to make up stories of eye gouging particularly when they actually won the game anyway.

the crusaders were very dirty and synical yesterday. There were many instances of tackles without the use of the arms. And how about kieren reid at the breakdown. When will refs wake up to the fact that kiwis roll into the scrumhalf to block the quick pass. Oh….and then carters desperate blocking of basson.

plenty went on withregards to the crusaders yesterday.
I’m completely pissed that the bulls let them leave loftus with a bonus point.

The Crusaders are masters of the type of obstructive unsporting play that Carter was blown up for. Carter himself does it very often, with numerous of his so called brilliant moves leading up to tries involving him subtly holding a guy back or “assisting” the gap to open by obstructing an inside defender.

He just happened to get caught this time.

I’m away for the easter holidays, so typing from my Blackberry. Not really fun. Only saw the last 20min of the game yesterday, but I reckon we gave away 2 easy tries after thinking the game was in the bag and slacking off as a result. And Carter’s obstruction was cynical and utterly intentional. B*stard.

@Tacitus(Deucalion)-14: Urgh yes, I had a BB until 6 months ago and this site works horrible on it. I switched to a Windows Mobile HTC. The site is still not optimised properly for a mobile experience but it is better on non-BBs.

General thoughts on the game. Thought Spies played well. The locks were solid, not spectacular. Potgieter wasn’t great and he was outplayed by CJ Stander. Akona was industrious as always. Olivier had a good game; Sadie has some way to go to settle into the Bulls pattern of attack but is ok on defence. Chiliboy was fantastic; what a player. Hougaard was his busy self. Steyn was fantastic with the boot but poor in general play with Olivier making up for it.

Yes I agree, the players became complaicent on defense. Overall, another learning curve for the boys. Better to learn while winning and being in the top half of the log.

Spies is developing into a decent captain. I thought making him captain was a joke and I’m eating my words.

This is going to be interesting hopefully there’s enough footage to make a conclusive decision. While I find it hard to believe the crusaders a dumb enough to do such a thing I find it even harder to believe chilli and flip would both lie knowing full well there are cameras everywhere.

Especially since this is the “justice for richie” law following the rwc it would be ironic that his own team mates get pinged for it.

Rugby is fast becoming a get away with what you can game especially at ruck and in broken play with obstructions ,late hits and shoulder charges going unnoticed.

Something else I didn’t get was why the hurricanes 7 wasn’t pinged for retaliation ???? Or is it now acceptable ?I distinctly remember Duane Vermulen against the highlanders being warned not to retaliate by the ref cause “he would deal with it” ofcourse the ref did nothing about the provoking offense . it’s really getting annoyingly inconsistent

Concerning your Champion Gouger Bakkies and Brendon Cannon:

    Try this……………………………

………………… in August 2003 he (Botha) was accused of biting and then eye-gouging Wallabies hooker Brendan Cannon, and although there was insufficient video evidence to consider the biting charge, and he was found not guilty of gouging, he was still suspended for eight weeks for “attacking the face”.[4] Cannon has given interviews stating that Botha both bit and gouged him [1] [2], and Botha himself gave an interview to The Times saying that his ban was “for an eye-gouge” [3].

    Good enough for me Opti.

Bakkies is perhaps the filthiest player to ever take the field in the Pro-era.

i hope flip and chilliboy are being sincere about their claims. it takes away from a really fantastic match. crusaders were in a lull during the third quarter of the match. and then they suddenly came alive again. typically all three of their tries scored by long range strike running. if they had replicated this style of play more often, they could have won. the bulls seem to have a built in weakness against long range attacks.

i have to really mention this. if you’re a true fan of rugby put this on your bucket list – watch dan carter live at least once. the great man is 30 this year and he might not play too many more years.
simply put (and what the TV cameras cannot accurately bring across) carter has the purest pass perhaps in the history of the game. and he just seems to always have that extra second on the ball that other players don’t.
he’s still getting up to speed post groin tear, because his goal kicking and kicking out of hand were below standard (zane kirchner in particular read his kicks very well all evening). other than that he was his usual self. his tackling is fierce and he took the ball up many times into tackles by the bulls heavies, without losing the ball or conceding a turnover.

  • 36.boktillzero: Reply to this comment

    @cane(cane)-32:

With regards to obstruction I don’t think it’s about where the player is with regards to the ball carrier it’s about what action the impeding player has taken . In this case I agree with the touch judge Dan carter makes the pass but remains involved in the play by making deliberate blocking contact with basson who may or may not have got to the ball carrier .
Its like pulling a back or blocking a supporting runner on attack , obviously a supporting runner is behind the ball career so is the player pulling him back … So are you saying is that does not count as obstruction because they are behind the ball carrier?

  • 37.viewer: Reply to this comment

the zac guildford hit on ndungane (or was it kirchner) could have been reffed because he got him super hard at about collar bone level and stopped him dead in the tracks. i have to say though, the bulls faithful are somewhat misrepresented in some quarters. they are more tolerant than they are given credit for.

for the last however many years the all blacks and the kiwi super rugby sides have been getting away with many questionable ‘pratices’… and I use the word deliberately because it is too widespread and consistent to be mere spur-of-the-moment indiscretions.

the most prevalent illegal strategy they use is to ‘over run’ every incident taking out opposition players along the way… for example… they will attempt a tackle and one player will actually tackle the ball carrier…whether it is successful of not, other players will run passed the ball carrier and continue to run for several paces and knock into, knock over, bump, obstruct or otherwise disrupt any other opposition player in the area… all very ‘accidentally’ you see… but what it does is break the continuity of the opposition play because there is no one left to offload to…

a similar strategy it employed at the breakdown where they run passed or over the breakdown point taking out opposition players in the area either waiting to clean out and/or waiting for the ball… this goes way beyond legal clean-outs at the breakdown and results in players several metres away from the breakdown being effectively tackled without the ball… again, all very ‘accidentally’ either way the start of the next phase is thus disrupted and slowed down…

very seldom are these illegal tackles on opposition without the ball penalized… or even recognized…

then there is the kiwi callous, cowardly penchant for shoulder-charging into the unprotected backs, ribs, necks of opposition players in rucks and mauls… usually from the side too… very seldom are these even picked up let alone penalized…

of course we all no about them lying in illegal positions at rucks to prevent the opposition ball coming out… or ‘lazy’ running back onsides… and they are very seldom penalized…

then yesterday’s stormers/highlanders game revealed a ‘new’ illegal strategy of the highlanders which went unrecognized and unpenalised for the whole game… there must have been 6 or 7 incidents in which the highlanders ‘mountaineered’ or trampled all over stormers players on the ground…

yes, it used to be legal if you were in the way… but it is now against the laws… and for so many highlanders to suddenly start raking stormers players makes it clear this was a team decision, probably in the knowledge that they would not be called out for it by the ref…

the reality is that with lyndon bray and paddy o’ instructing refs what to ‘focus on’ their attention is drawn away from the above incidents…

sour grapes…? indeed not… stormers won… but that doesn’t mean these incidents should not be highlighted… but as I said a few weeks ago, the only way to diminish the effect of these tactics is to be so accurate that the ref’s hand is largely forced… or tied behind his back…

carter’s interference yesterday was simply an extension of the above… and he clearly interfered with the bulls player… let’s face it… if he was running ‘in support’ of the ball carrier… he would have cut in-field to receive any pass… and make it impossible for the defender to close them both down… where he was, had he received the ball, the defender would certainly have tackled him…

sadly the end result of the refs being so ineffective is that rugby players will start to dive like soccer players to ensure they do indeed draw the ref’s attention to the incidents… because the players can’t/don’t trust that the ref’s will pick it up…

it really is time to use northern hemisphere refs… and it’s hardly more expensive to fly a pom or irish ref to new Zealand or south Africa than it is to fly southern hemisphere refs to each other’s countries…

  • 60.Alucard: Reply to this comment

@houston, we have a problem…(i_love_u_bakkiesbotha)-54: Bakkies has been involved in far less incidents than many supposedly great or clean NZers. So’oialo being a prime example, but so too McCaw, Thorne and Collins. One incident in 2003 by Bakkies, nothing under Jake and only two for the Boks under Peter (one of which was more IRB stupidity).

Now were we talking about Bismarck…. but then the media does not work hard in portraying him as a thug, rather as a poor unloved victim. NZers got more dirty the more PIers they started fielding.

A Rugby World Cup broadcaster was killed after a work bonding session during some rare down-time in the tournament.

Billy Dawson, 34, died in Auckland Hospital on Friday night, about 16 hours after he was punched while enjoying a night out with colleagues preparing for the Rugby World Cup’s quarterfinal weekend.

Christchurch-born but living in Auckland, he was a respected member of Sky TV’s back-room production team, specialising as a replay operator.

His brother-in-law Coen Lammers said Dawson suffered the fatal injuries outside Spy Bar in Auckland’s Viaduct after becoming separated from fellow Sky TV employees, and later died after.

“They had a day off. So they had a barbecue and went into town. They got separated right at the end and that is when it happened … they [Dawson's colleagues] are very cut up about it.”

Auckland police confirmed yesterday that they were treating Dawson’s death as a homicide.

Three men have been charged with assault in relation to the incident, and one man also charged for possession of methamphetamine.

All three men appeared in the Auckland District Court on Friday.

Bokke have three current team playing that have all been banned for gouging – Baakies, Bismark and Burger. NZ has none. Baakie got banned for the Canon disgrace, banned for hitting Phil Waugh, banned for the Lions disgrace and banned for 9 weeks for head butting Cowan. Citing and judiciary panel watching closely these days. Either Bokke are filth or they’re stupid in not getting away with filth. Pick one.

Without video proof, there is not much the citing commisioner can do about the claims by Chilli and Flip. I’m sure that if there was any video evidence of the eye gouging, we would’ve seen it by now on DSTV. I can’t see anything coming of this.

Just like nothing came of the claim of eye gouging by Heinrich Brussow a few years ago when we toured in Europe.

best to just get on with it.

That’s what we should be waiting for. In fact, the Bulls management should themselves actively look for video evidence and present it to the commisioner. In the absence of any evidence for such serious allegations WE are looking like the fools here.

There are minimum sanctions for eye gouging if a player is found guilty of that. In case of any evidence being found, the guilty party should be punished as such.

What do you mean I’m blase about it? Don’t you think if there was any proof of the incidents that it would’ve been all over our TV screen by now?

Some are rescuers and some have sancturies, my place is the meeting spot as I will have the largest and best sanctuary in Natal and I am central to every one. They all know me from other stuff before I decided to calm down and start this project which is almost complete. Actually it should be finished by now but builders do there own thing and don’t pitch all the time. Am not a fatty am a lean mean blond fighting machine lol, normally wear my hair in a plait or 2 plaits to keep it out the way when doing things outside or dealing with an animals. Looks wise, I am ok, did a bit of modeling when I was younger but am now a lot older, looks are in the eye of the beholder to some I may be fugly and to others not so fugly. The problem is that a lack of proof means that no action can be taken.

If there was indeed some eye gouging that took place, and I have no reason to believe that Chilliboy and Flip would make it up, the citing commisioner will need proof to charge the guilty player. The fact that they alerted Spies about it during the match suggests to me that something untoward did take place. However I would like you to think back bout the HB incident a couple of years ago. Although there was proof that somebody scratched him around his eye, (photo) the citing commisioner could not act against a player because there was no video evidence on the culprit hence nobody could be charged.

Nasa and plenty authorities got enough evidence of some close encounters of other kinds in their archives of ufo sightings and material…

why would they call white skinned people Caucasians cause they come from the Caucuses, where the first Aryan races were supposed to manifest, who knows perhaps Zeus and his cronies came here from outa space and started all this inter galactic inter racial interbreeding and now we got such a hotchpotch of mixed genetic bloodlines and cultures nobody knows the earthlings from the aliens anymore…

I think perhaps the red hair comes from mixed chromosomes between the Dravidian and the Aryan offshoots of the Caucasian races

And if we are to believe Darwin then all humans were originally descendants from the great Apies of the African planes.. but then Darwin don’t know half of wtf been going down through human or universal or intergalactic history.. wtf does the poor dumbfounded scientist know about where he originated and where he did not?

A 1989 article in Scientific American by Colin Renfrew classifies the Dravidian race, along with the Semitic race and the Aryan race, as the three major subdivisions that emerged from the Proto-Caucasian race, which he states separated into the aforementioned three groups about 9,000 BCE after migrating from North Africa—-

the Semitics (i.e., Proto-Semitics) establishing themselves in and radiating from Jericho, the Aryans (i.e., Proto-Indo-Europeans) establishing themselves in and radiating from Catal Huyuk, and the Dravidians (i.e., Proto-Dravidians) establishing themselves in and radiating from what is now southern Iran.[18]
In the early twentieth century, Carleton Coon argued that the “Caucasoid race” is of dual origin, consisting of Upper Paleolithic (mixture of H. sapiens and neanderthalensis) types and Mediterranean (purely H. sapiens) types. He repeated his theory in his 1962 book The Origin of Races.

I seen some exceptionally beautiful women of all races in my time… in India, in the middle east, in Europe, in Italy, in the far east, and in Africa.. all over the goddamn planet there are beauties to blow a man’s brain to smithereens.. I once met a Mexican girl while travelling in India.. if I weren’t married then I was gonna follow her to Mexico for sure

So I dunno who’s trick of nature it was to implant such exceptionally enticing attractive beauty all over the g’damn globe.. but whoever decided that this was the way to promote propagation of the human species by keeping man tied to the sensual attraction of feminine beauty, they sure as hell made a good job of the exercise .. hook line and sinker, caught and trapped without a hope in hell of ever getting free of the captivating malady.. till we get buried in the grave .. and start the reproductive procedure all over again next time around, till eternity.. whether on this little spinning orb planet or some place else.

Bolt ran his 19.19 into a -0.3 headwind while Johnson and Fredericks ran ahead of a +0.4 following wind which makes Bolts 19.19 pretty remarkable

Perhaps one the most underrated WR’s in sprinting is Pietro Mennea of Italy 19.72 run as far back as 1979 when sub 20 sec 200 mts were a rare occurrence..

Johnson’s 19.32 was a milestone time for sure, nobody thought it would be beat in another 50 years until Bolt came along and smashed it less than 15 years later

    19.19 ?0.3 Usain Bolt Jamaica 20 August 2009 Berlin

Nothing would surprise me from that rugby franchise though having been to a game at Pretoria and initially mistaking it for a neo Nazi rally and then having to endure the braai afterwards where the main topic was guns and home defense, the vibe is just awful so lying to win wouldn’t surprise me and would probably be condoned by their fans as it was with that halfwit Botha whose thuggery was encouraged by the Loftus fans.

What i find intriginbg is normally the first stone thorwn on this is a South African. On here we have about the murders in NZ, bought up by a South African blogger. He pulled out 1 murder out of the paper that happened 4 – 5 months ago and says how bad it is over here. seems a bit odd see as SA average between 37 murders a day. Some people.
Anyway i am a Maori and you said we havnt been treated correctly etc, or there abouts.

why would chili and flipp say they were gouged if they were not…? chili certainly has never been involved in anything untoward… but even if he had… it defies logic to invent things with all the cameras around…

what I find revealing is todd blackadder’s reaction… completely OTT IMO… he clearly thinks that bulls players (and probably south african players in general) are not ‘men of integrity’ and implies they are dishonest to even report foul play… by demanding an apology, before the fact, he is actually calling them liars… which i find offensive…

so blackadder is saying no south African dare report anything untoward simply because his team are ‘men if integrity’…?? They never make mistakes…? Never get caught up in the heat of the moment…?

get off the high horse and don’t take yourself so seriously tottie…

thing is… things happen in games… possibly by mistake… but the scrapes on flipp’s face certainly looked suspicious to me… seemed to be no swelling, so hardly the result of a knock of some sort…

also find it offensive that the siting commissioner also casts aspersions on the character of the bulls players and organisation by referring to the deadline… if they couldn’t find video evidence how could they submit anything…? but as far as I’m aware the commissioners job is to hand out the finding’s and sentence etc… not to weigh in with personal opinions about the case…

if I was the bulls, I would lodge a complaint against the commissioner…

I am so sick and tired of these selfrigheous Kiwi b@astards!! They get away with dispicable cheating and well done that the linesman penalized Carter’s blocking run. They use blocking all the time and very seldom get pingged for it. The ABs practice blocking lines and angle in their training drills. From broken play a tightforward in front of play manouvers into a blocking position and the attacking back uses this position as a sheild to avoid the cover defense.

This whole thing is like the JFK assassination.

SCENARIO 1 (lee harvey oswald shot him from behind) – its easiest to believe there was no gouging because if I’m not mistaken, the saders have never been accused in the previous 16 years of SR.

SCENARIO 2 (he was shot from the grassy knoll) – there was gouging but there’s no video to prove it)

SCENARIO 3 (the driver turned around & shot JFK with a pistol) – both bulls players were gouged by their teammates, like when corne krige concussed andre pretorius at twickenham

If somebody accused me in public of (say stealing money) and i know i have not done it AND after an investigation it became clear that there is no evidence whatsoever that I have done it I will expect the accuser to apologise or at least admit that he could have been wrong. I think most people will feel like that – Whether the accuser’s money is gone or not has got nothing to do with the fact that he accused me wrongly in public.(read: a mark to the face or not).

i don’t think anyone except for the thief would not have a problem with her report… or having their rooms searched…

yes, the crusaders have a ‘clean’ record… but that is not proof or evidence that one of them did not make a mistake or lose his cool… first time for everything…

it had to be someone on the field… chances are it was not one of his mates… but even if it was… by implying the guys are lying simply for reporting foul play is a very questionable response…

so we are saying that unless there is immediate video evidence… then foul play should not be reported by the captain…?

doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the white card in the first place…? they are to find out IF foul play has occurred… the fact that video evidence was not found does not mean nothing happened or that the guys are being dishonest… or need to apologize for reporting it…

Flip’s eye is proof something happened, whether intentional or accidental. Todd’s bullying statement before the commissioner looked at the evidence was designed to put pressure on and should be condemned.

It is ridiculous that Blackadder is asking for an apology from the Bulls. You can clearly see somebody handling Chilis head in the ruck before 1/2 time, but yes there is no evidence that somebody had their fingers in his eyes. Last time I checked the rule was against contact with eyes or the eye area of an opponent. Now as this guy failed to do damage Blackadder is asking for an apology….not very sportsman like…

I am sure some will say the Saders will be fired up to prove a point. Conversely then, wouldn’t the Stormers be fired up to take the Saders down a peg or two.

    This tournament sucks

The team at number 3 on the log has less points than the Bulls. The whole concept is wrong, too many derby matches, not enough variations, not playing all the teams

Then I though stuff this and bet some games against them and they started winning lol.

Now I pick mostly and will probably do so this weekend as well.

Thing is, the way that the Crusaders got on top of the Bulls in the first half was by getting in their faces at the breakdown, and if ever there was team who’c pattern of play is suited to countering that it’s us.

    So who knows?

I remember DC did not play last year but the replacement flyhalf (a bloke with a norwegian name) had an absolute blinder.
Btw I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of Joe Pieterson on Saturday- i critisized him during the build up week for his lack of attacking play this year- but it was very nice to be proven wrong.

Yes I too preferred the days of Super 10. There is too much rugby being played. There is only so much a player’s body can take.

My gut says these young Bulls players will not be afraid of travelling. Those days are gone.

crusaders played their best 30 minutes of the season and still only led by 6 at the half.

the bulls need d.potgieter and steggmann back chop chop.Standers a ball carrier and not a ground player. Bulls relaxing and subbing everyone in the last few minutes nearly blew it. Also a daft mistake by the bulls lineout team towards the end that led to the 3rd crusader try. Bulls had a penalty after the carter block and kicked for touch. A pretty piss poor kick with not much distance. Instead of throwing safe to the front of the lineout in a defensive formation…..the bulls opted to throw long to the back and promtly got picked off. In fact, I’d say it was the best crusaders lineout of the night other than the fact that the bulls had the put in.

Hence the crusaders have a valuable bonus point after being outscored 23-6 for the meat of the game. A fairly comprehensive 40 minute spell by the bullys albeit they still look a little off the pace with plenty of improvement needed.

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-478:

chilli and straaus are both playing really well. Bismaark is a drama and emotional player much like liebenberg. Winning the fight is as important as winning the game. Bismaarks saving grace was his work at the breakdown and turnovers. I’d say chilli and straaus are as good now but are far more adept at being an important cog in the sum-of-the-whole.

  • 480.Michael: Reply to this comment

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-479: Liebenburg is a good super player but no international. Bismark plays his best when he has competition; I don’t like his temper, nor his scrummaging.

Bismark has the potential to be the best in the world but he needs to control his agression and he needs to sort out his scrummaging. For how many years have been people saying this now…

Until he does so, I’d go with Chili.

for the record, cheetahs are playing brilliant rugby and well done for Naka, he deserves more recognition. Goosen is worldclass already, the ebersonns are really starting to perform with sias looking awesome at 12. In fact very kiwi like having a ball player at 12.Also adding another kicking option to the backs. Leroux, if form continues will be in the mix as a bok finisher and Dannillier, along with kirchener are the form 15′s. Brussow is back to his best it would seem, not as many steals as in 2009 but workrate is unimaginable. Coonie Oost will be the bok 1 with possibly greyling as a supersub unless the quota police force beast into the mix …..injury and all.

Again must applaud naka and his team as I would say that the cheetahs have some no name brands in the pack (johnson included in my opinion) and yet still get quick ball for the backs with a decent enough set piece.

  • 482.Michael: Reply to this comment

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-481: I like Beast. I don’t know when he is due back though. There is Gurtho who might be called back but I doubt Heyneke will do so, not with Coenie and Ginger in the mix.

I have always been a huge fan of having a playmaker at 12. Witness Michael du Plessis and Hennie le Roux at Bok level at 12, or the ’98 overseas tour with Muir at 12. Then Faffa Knoetze at 12 for WP. The list goes on.

Hopefully Heyneke will take a look at both Jantjies and Goosen during Bok squad sessions. I don’t expect it for against the English – he will have to go with established combos – but certainly as the year wears on.

Pretoria – A high school rugby player is facing criminal charges after he knocked a referee unconscious during a tournament Pretoria, according to a report on Monday.

Chris de Beer, 37, from the Blue Bulls Referee Union was sworn at and hit over the head by the boy after he sent him off with a red card for hitting another player last week, the Beeld newspaper reported.

“After the game I walked over to the player to confirm his number because I had to write a report.

“The boy took me by the throat, and said I was talking lekker kak,” he said.

The boy from Hans Strijdom High School in Mookgophong, Limpopo then hit him and rendered him unconscious.

because, beast has not had a decent game in almost 2 seasons, will not have played hardly any rugby by the time inbound tours come in and is competing for a jersey where there are plenty of candidates. We both know that sa can’t put out a whites only side so then you need to look at options. Habana,Jp Pieterson, Basson, chilli are all real candidates albeit also competing for jerseys with plenty of competition. Beest by default also comes into consideration. That is the reality of the situation, regardless of wanting to bring the “quota” into the discussion or not.

Ive read most of this thread without commenting. Im afraid ill get sucked into an argument, but here is my thoughts on the subject anyway..

Blackadder, showed some arrogance and insulted the opposition by demanding an apology before the sighting commission even gave their verdict. Guess what, its not about nationality, its about humanity.

Every player or team is capable of being guilty of foul play. Demanding an apology is like saying that his players are incapable of foul play, which would be a naive statement or a very clever statement.

If its a naive statement: its like saying they are not human. And breaking the rules, which they got penalized for a few times, arent that much different from taking a cheap shot when no one is looking. Carter almost got away with that one incident (blocking the defender).

If there is no evidence, it doesnt mean it didnt happen. The two bulls players complained on the field and a white card was issued. The bulls didnt groan about it afterwards, and even after no evidence was declared they kept quiet too. So Blackadder can stuff his expectation of an apology where the long white cloud casts no shadow.

If Blackadders statements is clever: Any player can be guilty of foul play. Its totally arrogant to think they cant. What a coach says about his players and team can have a big impact on the perception of a team. Blackadder, gives the perception that they would never ever, cross their hearts, be naughty on the field…. that sticks in the back of a refs head. Richie Macaw is a good example of a player who was previously invisible to committing infringements, because a positive perception was created by good and probably planned manipulation…

Id call it sour grapes after losing and fear of suspension.

Resting players after a long southern hemisphere season…On the other hand, easing players to the international scene might not be a bad idea. @Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-522: True, id like to have Fdp to help MSteyn start to fade away and make way for Goosen or Jantjies. I see it this way: Hougard didnt really help to relieve the pressure on MSteyn. If the bulls forwards dont dominate and gets confronted with a pack that doesnt stand back and puts pressure on them Steyn struggles. Thats why you need a scrummy to alleviate the pressure. Hougie needs to work on that…Fdp is the master in that regard and much better suited for that role.

Id play hougie if MSteyn wasnt the number one choice flyhalf, but he probably will be.. For the time being…

Play Hougie and Goosen at 9 and 10. Man that is a dynamic duo…

Unbeaten and unbowed: savvy Stormers blow Highlanders away to sit on top of the heap
    April 9

THE Stormers have certified themselves as dangerous Super Rugby frontrunners in a dramatic round that involved brawls and accusations of eye-gouging.

The Stormers remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament after overwhelming the leading New Zealand side, the Highlanders, in Dunedin, showing that jet lag and a tough victory the previous week against the Bulls in Cape Town had not sapped their energy levels.

The victory revolved around intense defence and smart counter-attack whenever the Highlanders made mistakes. It enabled them to stay on top of the South African conference ahead of the Bulls, who beat the Crusaders in Pretoria after warding off a late comeback in a match marred by eye-gouging allegations.
    Advertisement: Story continues below

Bulls forwards Chiliboy Ralepelle and Flip van der Merwe told referee Jaco Peyper they had been gouged, and he produced the white card twice to put the incidents on report.

This surprised the Crusaders, a team not renowned for foul play. After the match, Crusaders captain Kieran Read was mystified by the Bulls players’ complaints, arguing his team did not resort to such unsavoury tactics. He said his team were ”not the type of men to do that sort of thing”.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder was just as vehement, stating if the allegations were incorrect, he would be ”expecting an apology”.

In other matches, off-field yellow cards were issued. Sharks prop Jannie du Plessis received one after he fought Hurricanes back-rower Karl Lowe in New Plymouth – slapping him in the face. Three separate fights broke out.

”It was a pretty hard slap, and he’s a big boy,” Lowe said ”I wouldn’t like to meet him down a dark alley.”

What was Blackadder suppose to do/say when he was confronted by these allegations?

People defending him forgot that they reacted the same way as Bulls supporters and other South Africans when PdV defended Bok players during the B & L tour in 2009 after similar allegations. (“If we want to gouge lions, we’ll go to the Bushveld and do it to real lions.”)

People who now ridicule Blackadder for defendinding his players, forget that they defended PdV back then because a coach is suppose to defend and protect his players if they are accuse of something , like this, without any proof.

Strange how people can change their views about the same kind of incident.

Still think this was a ploy from the Bulls all along.

I simply cannot believe that not one camera, commentator, teammate, touch judge or the ref missed not one, but TWO incidents of eye gouging.

THis whole thing reeks of a pre-meditated tactic. The worst part is most of these Bulls okes call themselves christian.

And let’s face it. Chilli and his buddy Basson get easily confused with all the banned substances they “accidentally” inhale.

Did I say Flip inured his own eye? So Flip had a little blood around the eye, does that mean he was gouged? Every match I see okes walking around with blood around their eyes etc.

So before you mouth off, you may want to think about how stupid you sound. I’m simply suggesting that it’s highly unusual that 2 bulls players accuse the oppo of gouging and NOT ONE SINGLE camera, official or teammate picked it up. Would you stand idly by while someone did a little eyeball surgery on one of your teammates?

My opinion, they devised the ploy to try and rattle the Saders and draw the refs attention away from other things. A bit like the Bulls player who was screaming like a big girls blouse that he ha a mortal wound, when the Saders had good front foot ball, only to get up, rub his bicep a bit and suddenly be healed.

Come to think of it, I think it was Flip as well…. hmmmmm….

Bissie must be 3rd in line now, behind:

    3. Bissie
    4. Tiaan

Tiaan is actually challenging him quite hard for that 3rd spot at the moment.

Maybe we should keep a no. 2 Bok barometre going every week.

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-560:
Supporters at least have to have some integrity also. You can’t just change your mind when it suits you. Dangerous play is dangerous play and no matter what team make them guilty of that, you should condemn it.

I don’t see much difference between the two incidents except that in one instance it was South Africans being accused and their coach defending his players’ integrity. In the 2nd instance it is NZ players being accused and their coach defending their integrity.

Where does Todd say that his team never do anything wrong? He is only defending his players against this specific allegation of eye gouging. A very, very serious allegation.

I bet you that if Chilliboy and Flip made similar allegations against the Sharks, some Shark supporters, who now side with them, would’ve rip them apart for making these allegations without any proof.

Anyway, it’s done and dusted now. Best we all just move on and concentrate on the next game.

Dubious. Not impossible, but to my mind improbable.

And since you ask why the winning team would bring it up (even though they brought it up when they were in fact still playing), I would ask why an allegation – NAY TWO ALLEGATIONS IN ONE GAME – of something a serious as eye-gouging was not followed up by the Bulls after the game? No report was filed. Not one dotted i or crossed t.

Now doesn’t that seem strange? I mean surely if two of your players were “victims” of one of the worst allegations in rugby, you would file the report in that allotted timeframe?

To his credit, Goosen has done his talking on the field!
Top points scorer after 7 rounds, he has defended well, he gets involved in rucks (too often), and he gets that backline away smartly!

His stats belie his age, and the “kicking flyhalf” perception. His running meters, and offloads are the highest of any flyhalf in the tournament thus far, and he doesn’t even feature on the missed tackles list.

What more could one ask of a 10? That said, I don’t think he should be rushed into the bok team! But he can’t be far off, he certainly good enough!.

Pretoria – The Bulls will not agree to a demand from Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder that they need to apologise after no evidence of eye-gouging was found by Sanzar’s judiciary system, High Performance and Media Manager Ian Schwartz said on Monday.
Blackadder told a post-match media briefing in Pretoria on Saturday that he expected an apology from the Bulls – a statement he repeated to the New Zealand media – should the allegations proved to be false.

According to Sanzar, no evidence on the matter could be sourced via video material available.

Sanzar CEO Greg Peters said there was no evidence to substantiate the claims after it was fully reviewed by the citing commissioner (Freek Burger) and the video evidence did not support any further action being taken.

“The Bulls are not interested in getting into a public spat with the Crusaders, as we always had the greatest respect for them and a very cordial relationship,” Schwartz said.

The Bulls are standing their ground on claims made by the players.

“The rules are clear and we applied them 100 percent correctly. We had the right to raise the matter with the referee and we accept the fact that there was no video evidence.”

He stressed that the Bulls’ players’ integrity is above reproach.

“I just want to say that our players’ integrity is just as important to us, as the Crusaders’ players integrity is to them. I feel the players will not make unfounded accusations unless something has happened.”

    No apology will be extended.

“For them to suggest we must now apologise, just because there is no video evidence available, would mean we have lied. It is ridiculous to suggest that every time there is a citing and there is not enough evidence, the other team should apologise. It is a pity they have raised the matter through the media, as our doors of communication with them has always been open for a direct approach. We would have followed the official and appropriate channels.”

How absurd can these Kiwis get?

    They are “men of integrity”.

    Yeah right.

Which is why they use every dirty trick in the book to try and help their team to a win.

Sly obstruction of defenders. Shoulder charges galore (Guildford on Ndungane, clear as day), captain Integrity himself, Keiran Reid, pulling Vermaak back into a ruck when the Bulls were in a prime attacking position.

They are cheats. How they can claim to have this inborn sense of “integrity” boggles the mind.

Demanding an apology when our players raise a legitimate complaint, simply because the dirty deeds were done at the bottom of a ruck where the cameras don’t penatrate?

    Laughable.

  • 610.Tacitus: Reply to this comment

Blackadder raised the stakes on this one. He is the one who based his defense on his players’ sense of integrity.

Well, integrity stretches beyond whether you punch a guy or not. In fact, you can punch a guy honestly, and still be a “man of integrity” as Tod describes his men.

But you can’t be a man of integrity and then try and help your wing score a try by deliberately obsrtructing the opposing defender.

You can’t be a man of integrity – a captain of integrity in fact – and still pull the opposing scrumhalf back into the ruck to prevent the other team from getting quick ball 5 yards from your goal line.

You can’t be a man of integrity and play cheating rugby.

By that standard, the Crusaders have pretty much the lowest collective integrity in the entire competition.

As I eluded to a few weeks back – it doesn’t matter what you do on a Rugby field if you are a Kiwi.

Cheating, obstruction, foul play..it’s just par for the course in NZ Rugby under the knowledge that the referees and administrators are under instruction not to intervene. If it had been an Australian or a South African they would have received 10 weeks but seeing it was a kiwi…they demand an apology for daring to question them.

Kiwis – the ugliest, low breeds in the Southern Hemisphere. Every game I watched on the weekend was laced with Kiwi teams cheating, obstructing, lying on the ball, entering from off side, taking out opposition players…and rarely getting penalised. Its a joke

Whilst many of the Bulls supporters are being over sensitive and self righteous I am afraid ou are now guilty of the same thing.
I am not a bulls supporter but in this instance I see nothing they have done wrong.

The allegations were not found to be false. There was no video evidence.
Flip definitely got a finger near or in the eye. We just don’t know who of if it was intentional.

We don’t even know what allegation the bulls made because based on my limited rugby experience a player often does not know who or how the event happened.
It is of course possible that either a bulls player or a crusaders player accidentally stuck a finger in Flips eyes.

You are absolutely wrong about the protocol. It is simple.
Side 1 brings an event to refs attention
Ref refers it with awhile card
Side 1 can include it in their ref report if they want to.
Citing commissioner reviews and announces finding
Side 1 and 2 accept decision

Because there was no video evidence it does not follow that the bulls players lied.
And lying would be about as bad as deliberately gouging btw.

Seriously entering dangerous ground when players or coaches expect apologies for being unable to substantiate allegations of foul play with TV evidence. The fact remains that SA teams are the least likely to involve the citing commissioner, in fact we have a history of just sucking it up and moving on sometimes to our own detriment. The Bulls management didnt have to make a formal complaint in this case as the referee had handled the situation very well and there was no need to stoke the fire.

At the end of the day nobody has suffered any harm or do some idiots out there believe that once the accusation was made all the crusaders players intensity dropped because their feelings were hurt?

Todd Blackadder should be charged with misconduct for his disgraceful attempt to sway any pending decision by the citing commissioner. He could have just kept his mouth shut and then taken the high ground once the decision was made.

Perhaps it is time for SA teams to start citing teams whose players never use their arms in tackles. There were a few examples of Maori exocet shoulder charges all unpunished this week.

Something fishy about these accusations of the Bulls. Firstly, Chilli Boy was as calm as a Sunday afternoon stroll when he was allegedly being gouched to death. Same with Flip. No pushing or shoving, or even a fight breaking out. Then afterwards, with two players upset and gouched, the Bulls don’t lay a complaint at all. Nothing? I’m just saying it is clear that this was an upsetting thing for the Bulls. Pierre Spies twice being called by his players about being gouched. Why did the Bulls organization not go to the full extent and give the commissioner full details with a complaint?

Also, you guys are saying things about Todd, but he is standing up for his players. Bulls didn’t push for their players. Bulls made the accusation, then they must prove and push it to the full extent. It’s like a collegue walking into your office and saying you stole from them, then walking out the room and doing and saying nothing further about the accusation. No details, nothing.

@rossoneri(rossoneri)-650: Maybe the Bulls were fast on the draw and reviewed the same footage shown tonight in NZ on the rugby show Reunion. Flippie minus blood enters the fray, contact occurs during which any eye gouging would have been clear to see and wasn’t, he then emerges with blood around the eye. I think you used to get something in SA called “wrap from downunder”, a combination of the Oz Rugby Club and NZ Reunion. Have a look and make up your own mind. You seem more logical than some of the emotional posters here and are obviously capable of drawing an unbiased decision for yourself.

Look as dirty and guilty as these Crusaders are, they are not dumb.
As usual with New Zealanders they do their dirty work and skullduggery in the dark where no one can ping them.
Unlike our boneheads, like Schalk Burger who gouges out in the open in front of the ref then rolls over and does it again for the other camera.
The rules of the game unfortunately are that if there is no evidence you are not guilty.

Your stereotyping of the Crusaders as guilty and dirty is the very reason Todd wanted an apology if the Bulls accusations were unfounded. Accusations even when there is no evidence have a nasty habit of sticking when it suits some detractors, unless they are challenged.

Reunion gave big coverage of the Stormers performance in Dunners and not for nothing, voted Joe Peterson’s try as the try of the week. When the Stormers re-discover how to score tries like that on top of their rocksolid defence they become a formidable side. Going to be a cracker of a game on Saturday.

Sitting in the stands (with no commentary or the ref’s mic), both times it was hard for me to figure out why there was a stoppage in play as spies was addressing the ref. Flip & chilli’s body language tells a tale. Compare their reaction to that of adam byrnes’ accuser. That back was furious & gesticulating all over the place. My verdict – they were both gouged by a team mate.
