Crusaders cleared of foul play

Crusaders cleared of foul play

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has demanded an apology from the Bulls after eye-gouging allegations against his team couldn’t be substantiated by the Super Rugby citing commissioner.

Bulls forwards Chiliboy Ralepelle and Flip van der Merwe complained to referee Jaco Peyper that they had been eye-gouged during their match in Pretoria, won 32-30 by the Bulls. Peyper used a white card to refer the incidents to the citing commissioner.

According to reports in New Zealand, the commissioner has reviewed the video footage of the incidents in question and found the Crusaders not guilty.

‘The citing commissioner has reviewed it and after that review there was nothing in the video footage that would point to the allegation being substantiated,’ Sanzar chief executive Greg Peters said.

‘The citing commissioner also found it interesting that the Bulls did not follow through with a complaint within the four-hour window after the game.’

After the game, Blackadder said he was ‘bemused’ at the allegations and demanded an apology if they were found to be incorrect. Following the citing commissioner’s ruling and after looking at the footage, the Crusaders coach wonders why the Bulls would have made such claims.

‘The first one with Chiliboy, you would expect that the player would come out of the breakdown holding his eye, but he certainly didn’t. I wonder whether it was a negative ploy.’

Captain Kieran Read also said that he was disappointed with the Bulls for accusing the Crusaders of such tactics.

‘Initially I was really surprised at the allegations,’ he said. ‘It has now come out that there’s no case to answer.

‘It’s a kick in the guts to us because we’re men of integrity and it’s no surprise that it’s turned out the way it has.’

Who was the citing commissioner ? and why is he finding it “interesting” that the bulls didnt follow up the complaint? . A white card was issued which is officially automatically saying that the incident must be reviewed why do the bulls have to follow it up?
goes to show you what attitude the judiciary take towards south african teams. its like they are implying that chili and flip are lying

there is not enough evidence to pin this on anyone that doesnt mean it didnt happen.

bulls v crusaders at loftus games alway have some drama – last time houggard score after the hooter and the crusaders said there was a forward pass. this time they were denied a try which could have won them the game

I immediately picked the Bulls (on Superbru) to win this one by a few points when I saw the terrible twins (Jako and Pro) will be officiating.
Otherwise i would have gone for Saders by at least 8.
I mentioned this to Tacitus before the game but then somebody else on the blog called me a whinger so maybe we must just change the subject :)

The Citing Commissioners and the back-up commissioners (in brackets) are:

    South Africa:Freek Burger (Andy Prior)
    Australia:Scott Nowland (**** Byres)
New Zealand:Steve Hinds (Mike O Leary)

    Are these still in charge?

Hey, i hope you guys are right.
I was at newlands last year when the saders beat us despite fielding a very depleted team and later even had to play a flanker on the wing.
It was a terrible day, since that day i am a bit scared of that bunch.

If the Stormers lose then it’s a consolation, if they win I’d be happy to give up the points I guess…..

I may go out on a limb and just pick my guys though. Go for it anyway….

Yip, one of the kakkest feelings is to pick ‘against’ the Stormers and then they win-it happened to me last year when they played away against the bulls and sharks- felt like a bit of a traitor, lol.

Only Skoppy knew for sure they were going to win :)

@Robzim(Robzim)-460: The Saders lost Sonny and we have fit locks which will make a difference to our pack at scrum time.

I am sure some will say the Saders will be fired up to prove a point. Conversely then, wouldn’t the Stormers be fired up to take the Saders down a peg or two.

    This tournament sucks

The team at number 3 on the log has less points than the Bulls. The whole concept is wrong, too many derby matches, not enough variations, not playing all the teams

@Robzim(Robzim)-464: Haha yes I always used to go for the Stormers and they constantly disappointed me, I used to haemorrhage points on them regularly, but I felt like a traitor if I didn’t back them.

Then I though stuff this and bet some games against them and they started winning lol.

Now I pick mostly and will probably do so this weekend as well.

Thing is, the way that the Crusaders got on top of the Bulls in the first half was by getting in their faces at the breakdown, and if ever there was team who’c pattern of play is suited to countering that it’s us.

    So who knows?

Yip, our pack is certainly playing better this year- they seemed to have overcome the loss of Francois Louw.
I remember DC did not play last year but the replacement flyhalf (a bloke with a norwegian name) had an absolute blinder.
Btw I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of Joe Pieterson on Saturday- i critisized him during the build up week for his lack of attacking play this year- but it was very nice to be proven wrong.

Yes I too preferred the days of Super 10. There is too much rugby being played. There is only so much a player’s body can take.

My gut says these young Bulls players will not be afraid of travelling. Those days are gone.

crusaders played their best 30 minutes of the season and still only led by 6 at the half.

the bulls need d.potgieter and steggmann back chop chop.Standers a ball carrier and not a ground player. Bulls relaxing and subbing everyone in the last few minutes nearly blew it. Also a daft mistake by the bulls lineout team towards the end that led to the 3rd crusader try. Bulls had a penalty after the carter block and kicked for touch. A pretty piss poor kick with not much distance. Instead of throwing safe to the front of the lineout in a defensive formation…..the bulls opted to throw long to the back and promtly got picked off. In fact, I’d say it was the best crusaders lineout of the night other than the fact that the bulls had the put in.

Hence the crusaders have a valuable bonus point after being outscored 23-6 for the meat of the game. A fairly comprehensive 40 minute spell by the bullys albeit they still look a little off the pace with plenty of improvement needed.

I’d just like to say now that Bismaark is definately no certainty for the boks, both Straaus and chilli are playing awesome rugby.

  • 477.Brigadier Van Zyl: Reply to this comment

In fact, had Chilli not been in the mix, Straaus would be a serious Bok Captain candidate.

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-477: I haven’t seen the Cheetahs’ games. chili has impressed me. Cool, calm, focused and damn effective. He does the basics better than Bismark and is a better scrummager.

There is something about Bismark which leaves me cold.

  • 479.Brigadier Van Zyl: Reply to this comment

    @Michael(mikeybrass)-478:

chilli and straaus are both playing really well. Bismaark is a drama and emotional player much like liebenberg. Winning the fight is as important as winning the game. Bismaarks saving grace was his work at the breakdown and turnovers. I’d say chilli and straaus are as good now but are far more adept at being an important cog in the sum-of-the-whole.

  • 480.Michael: Reply to this comment

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-479: Liebenburg is a good super player but no international. Bismark plays his best when he has competition; I don’t like his temper, nor his scrummaging.

Bismark has the potential to be the best in the world but he needs to control his agression and he needs to sort out his scrummaging. For how many years have been people saying this now…

Until he does so, I’d go with Chili.

for the record, cheetahs are playing brilliant rugby and well done for Naka, he deserves more recognition. Goosen is worldclass already, the ebersonns are really starting to perform with sias looking awesome at 12. In fact very kiwi like having a ball player at 12.Also adding another kicking option to the backs. Leroux, if form continues will be in the mix as a bok finisher and Dannillier, along with kirchener are the form 15′s. Brussow is back to his best it would seem, not as many steals as in 2009 but workrate is unimaginable. Coonie Oost will be the bok 1 with possibly greyling as a supersub unless the quota police force beast into the mix …..injury and all.

Again must applaud naka and his team as I would say that the cheetahs have some no name brands in the pack (johnson included in my opinion) and yet still get quick ball for the backs with a decent enough set piece.

  • 482.Michael: Reply to this comment

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-481: I like Beast. I don’t know when he is due back though. There is Gurtho who might be called back but I doubt Heyneke will do so, not with Coenie and Ginger in the mix.

I have always been a huge fan of having a playmaker at 12. Witness Michael du Plessis and Hennie le Roux at Bok level at 12, or the ’98 overseas tour with Muir at 12. Then Faffa Knoetze at 12 for WP. The list goes on.

Hopefully Heyneke will take a look at both Jantjies and Goosen during Bok squad sessions. I don’t expect it for against the English – he will have to go with established combos – but certainly as the year wears on.

    This from News 24:

Pretoria – A high school rugby player is facing criminal charges after he knocked a referee unconscious during a tournament Pretoria, according to a report on Monday.

Chris de Beer, 37, from the Blue Bulls Referee Union was sworn at and hit over the head by the boy after he sent him off with a red card for hitting another player last week, the Beeld newspaper reported.

“After the game I walked over to the player to confirm his number because I had to write a report.

“The boy took me by the throat, and said I was talking lekker kak,” he said.

The boy from Hans Strijdom High School in Mookgophong, Limpopo then hit him and rendered him unconscious.

because, beast has not had a decent game in almost 2 seasons, will not have played hardly any rugby by the time inbound tours come in and is competing for a jersey where there are plenty of candidates. We both know that sa can’t put out a whites only side so then you need to look at options. Habana,Jp Pieterson, Basson, chilli are all real candidates albeit also competing for jerseys with plenty of competition. Beest by default also comes into consideration. That is the reality of the situation, regardless of wanting to bring the “quota” into the discussion or not.
