‘Want it? Come and get it’
10 Apr 2012
Morné Steyn will not give up his Springbok jersey without a fight.
Where once South Africa had struggled to produce world-class flyhalves with the regularity they did loose forwards, we are now blessed with youthful talent in the most pivotal position.
Steyn, at 27, is the old hand looking to stave off the advances of Generation 10. It is a challenge, he says, that has reinvigorated him and one he refuses to see himself losing.
‘They won’t just walk into the side. I won’t just give my jersey to them,’ he says in the new issue of SA Rugby magazine. ‘They have to come and get it if they want it. I won’t give it away easily.’
Steyn also responds to criticism about the way he plays the game and his defence, and explains why he’s still motivated to perform at both Super Rugby and Test levels.
Also in the new issue:
– Keegan Daniel explains his people-driven approach to captaincy
– Juandré Kruger and the Bulls are reaping the benefits of his decision to stick with the union over the past two seasons
– Eben Etzebeth has become an overnight sensation for the Stormers, but he almost fell through the cracks
– Derick Minnie was told he would never make it at the Lions. He didn’t listen
– Chiefs flyhalf Aaron Cruden may have a happy-go-lucky attitude but he takes his rugby deadly seriously
– Sarel Pretorius is playing his natural attacking game for the Waratahs
– In his regular column, Reds coach Ewen McKenzie explains why it’s difficult for coaches around the world to retain the players they identify and nurture
– Opposition teams have worked hard to diminish his influence, but Cecil Afrika remains a match-winner for the Springbok Sevens team
– Cape Town is getting ready to host the IRB Junior World Championship
– The Wildeklawer Super Schools has grown into one of the biggest events on the South African schools rugby calendar
– Former Lions loose forward Ernst Joubert made a life-changing move to Saracens three years ago
– A season in Japan has rejuvenated Fourie du Preez … will he play for the Boks again?

Before I go, this on News 24 from Brendan Nel:
Johannesburg – The eye-gouging claims that overshadowed the Bulls’ win over the Crusaders on the weekend will fade into the darkness, but will leave some bad blood between the two former Super Rugby champion teams if they happen to meet again later in the competition.
The Crusaders may have escaped censure by the SANZAR disciplinary appeal, but despite reports to the contrary, have not been cleared of the claims made during last Saturday’s game.
The matter has been let go simply because there is no evidence to substantiate the claim, SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters told 3News in New Zealand.
“It doesn’t mean they are cleared, it simply means that there is no video evidence to substantiate the claim,” Peters told the television stadium, adding that the governing body would not be looking at any further steps against either team.
The controversy angered the Crusaders and the Bulls replied on Monday they would not submit to a demand for an apology, standing by their claims that the incidents happened.
But where the Bulls fell flat, SANZAR has now asked teams to add a second report after a match, something which was not done by the Bulls at the time. Therefore, there was no other evidence to consider other than the video footage of the match, which offered no help to substantiate the claims.
Peters said this would now become a requirement for any white card action.
“We’ll be telling the teams today that there will be an expectation from SANZAR that if they make a referral on field, they follow it up after the match,” Peters said.
The SANZAR ceo added that in future, any false claims would fall under bringing the game into disrepute, and punished accordingly.
“We would look at teams who are making vexatious complaints, or if we found it to be the case. We may take action under our code of conduct for bringing the game into disrepute.”

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-156: Aha, you see, Toddy has set the wheels in motion!
you don’t mess with Cantabs, now “vexatious claims” will be dealt with under “bringing the game into disrepute” – does this mean Peters inherently believes the Bulls were talking kak but because they didn’t follow up with a report it doesn’t constitute disrepute?

@stormersboy(stormersboy)-162: I never was convinced… And no “Declaration”s of Innocence will be good enough either.
Declaration… not Proclamation… see? You might find that a declaration of innocence is a very lawerly thing, yeah?
Yeah, yeah… I know its semantics… But that’s normally important to fools who profess they are lawmen… Yet I do understand the semantics difficulty if that vaunted Law diploma you claim to possess came from Mabhunu College down in Stellenbosch….
They don’t speaka the Eenleesh to well down there, hey?

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-167: “mabhunu college”
10 Apr 2012, 18:43 pm
@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-167: I understand the legal difference, however subtle.
In this instance the use of the word proclaim is specifically used to refer to a public announcing of someone’s innocence if they are found not guilty. I’m talking more reputation-ally in this instance. Refer to my post further down where the rape allegations were withdrawn and the stigma still remains.
Just like the Crusaders have not been proclaimed innocent.
So I’m comfortable with the context here.
But hey, Mea Culpa if you disagree. I’m not that bothered either way.

Would be my core 30 Man squad to begin Meyers reign as Bok coach if I was him…
15. Jaco Taute / Riaan Viljoen.
14. Francois Hougaard / Gio Aplon.
13. Jacque Fourie / J.P. Pieterson.
12. Francois Steyn / Jean De Villiers.
11. Bryan Habana / Bjorn Basson.
10. Morne Steyn / Johan Goosen.
9. Fourie Du Preez / Ruan Pienaar.
8. Pierre Spies / Duane Vermuelen.
7. Schalk Burger (c) / Willem Alberts.
6. Heinrich Brussow / Francois Louw.
5. Andries Bekker / Juandre Kruger.
4. Jaco Etsebeth / Flip Van Der Merwe.
3. C.J. Van Der Linde / Jannie Du Plessis.
2. Bismark Du Plessis / Adriaan Strauss.
1. Gurthro Steenkamp / Coenie Oosthuizen.
10 Apr 2012, 22:07 pm
Sure, if we want an average player that kicks most of his goals but offers nothing else, why not put Morne in the team. Goosen is the best 10 in SA, by far. He has already shown he can handle the pressure and presently dictates a game like no other 10 in the world. The Boks are in a position at the moment where we can select a destructive backilne that can rip teams apart. Add that to the potential of our pack and we could be unbeatable within the next year.
1st choice backline:
9. Sarel
10. Goosen
11. Le Roux
12. Steyn
13. Fourie
14. Hougaard
15. Joe
10 Apr 2012, 22:41 pm
Michael – I don’t know what greg peters’ problem is. Is he insinuating that gouging did take place. I’d like a clarification. Alternatively my team should confront him. He’s the same guy who wants an american team in SR isn’t it. The conference sham isn’t enough.
10 Apr 2012, 23:03 pm
@viewer(viewer)-174: No clarification is needed, imo. He won’t call the Bulls players liars but there is no video evidence and so the allegations are unsubstantiated.
10 Apr 2012, 23:20 pm
@viewer(viewer)-174: ag stop being so precious about the eye gouging crusaders man.
are you a crusaders player?
if not then dont take their thuggish burden on your back ok?
10 Apr 2012, 23:45 pm
@garth(garth)-173: garth – isnt sarel a bit suspect on defence? i think that hougaard is a much better all round player. good backline. i still have faith in morne and would love to see him take goosen and lambie under his wing and mentor them and hopefully pass on his kicking game.
ShaunSwindon – not a fan of Ruan Pienaar and prefer hougaard as a halve
8. Pierre Spies? while he’s having a great season so far i think this form not class.
cant wait to see the boks lineup. hoping meyer can leave his prvincialism baggage at the door and embrace all the SA teams in his line up
11 Apr 2012, 01:34 am
@man1a(man1a)-177: Meyer will pick players on merit as far as the powers that be allows it.
For England and Super Series I think he will be conservative. Don’t expect to see many changes from the WC team, except for players that are not available anymore. The year-end tour will be when he start building his team for the rest of his reign.
His team could look like this:
Greyling (if Beast is still injured)
Bismark
Jannie
Etzebeth
Bekker
Brussow
Burger (if fit, otherwise Alberts)
Spies
du Preez (if available, otherwise Hougaard)
M. Steyn
Habana
de Villiers/F. Steyn
Fourie (if available, otherwise Olivier)
JP
Aplon
Chilliboy
Oosthuizen
Rossouw (if available, otherwise Kruger)
Alberts/ Vermeulen
Hougaard/ Duvenhage or Vermaak
Goosen/Lambie
Steyn/de Villiers

@garth(garth)-173:
“unbeatable” thats the spirit
11 Apr 2012, 03:07 am
@Kleuter(Kleuter)-178: Kleuter, and the key here is your statement “as far as the powers that be allows it”
yeah i agree that we wont see many bolters in the boks and AB’s for the midYear tests. Shame though as its a great opportunity to blood some players.
like your line up except for spies.
dont know Etzebeth but wouldnt you start Rossouw?
burger would be my captain.
alberts i like as an impact player.
still not sold on bismark but not really anyone else deserves as much a start as he does.
fSteyn would get in ahead of DV
11 Apr 2012, 03:19 am
@man1a(man1a)-180:
9 & 10 will be your problem same old same old kick and hope garbage
11 Apr 2012, 04:21 am
@greentea(greentea)-181: greenT – i hoping against hpe its not the “same old same old kick and hope garbage”
i’m a kiwi but i love the way the boks used to play. they need to get with a new game plan and start injecting some moves for the backs. brutal big strong forward play then unleashing some back moves
in the last 5 years not once have i seen the boks have a set move for getting the ball to habana (or the other wing). i thought that maybe habana was past it but this season shows he’s still got it. so in my eyes the boks have been squandering their backs for the past 4-5 seasons.
this mentality has to go. boks on offence are only using 8-9 players vs 15 opposition defence. they’re simply out numbered
11 Apr 2012, 05:03 am
@man1a(man1a)-182: So true, if players like Habana got the ball more often, then they would be much more inclined to play what is in front of them properly. Over the last few years, its been such a rarity for him to get the ball, that he tries desperately hard to do something special, when it simply isn’t on and more often then not it doesn’t come off making him appear stupid and past it.
11 Apr 2012, 05:32 am
@man1a(man1a)-182: Good post. You would have done better with our team than the Clown. I cannot remember when last Habana had a decent attacking ball .you are spot on!
11 Apr 2012, 08:43 am
@Kleuter(Kleuter)-178:
Greyling over Coenie, that’s crazy talk.
Bismark – Agree
Jannie – Not sure about Jannie anymore. It’s time we get a better option at 3.
Etzebeth – Agree
Bekker – Agree
Brussow – Agree
Burger (if fit, otherwise Alberts) – Agree, but not convinced.
Spies – No chance, there are much better option than this moffie.
du Preez (if available, otherwise Hougaard) – FDP was a has been three years ago.
M. Steyn – Too limited.
Habana – No step, no place.
de Villiers/F. Steyn – Agree with Frans, Jean is also limited.
Fourie (if available, otherwise Olivier) – Olivier!!! That’s a funny one. Hahaha!
JP – Not over Hougaard (Hougaard is a better player with space, it’s also great having two players in the side that can interchange at 9)
Aplon (More of a fringe/bench player)
