Morné Steyn will not give up his Springbok jersey without a fight.
Where once South Africa had struggled to produce world-class flyhalves with the regularity they did loose forwards, we are now blessed with youthful talent in the most pivotal position.
Steyn, at 27, is the old hand looking to stave off the advances of Generation 10. It is a challenge, he says, that has reinvigorated him and one he refuses to see himself losing.
‘They won’t just walk into the side. I won’t just give my jersey to them,’ he says in the new issue of SA Rugby magazine. ‘They have to come and get it if they want it. I won’t give it away easily.’
Steyn also responds to criticism about the way he plays the game and his defence, and explains why he’s still motivated to perform at both Super Rugby and Test levels.

Before I go, this on News 24 from Brendan Nel:
Johannesburg – The eye-gouging claims that overshadowed the Bulls’ win over the Crusaders on the weekend will fade into the darkness, but will leave some bad blood between the two former Super Rugby champion teams if they happen to meet again later in the competition.
The Crusaders may have escaped censure by the SANZAR disciplinary appeal, but despite reports to the contrary, have not been cleared of the claims made during last Saturday’s game.
The matter has been let go simply because there is no evidence to substantiate the claim, SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters told 3News in New Zealand.
“It doesn’t mean they are cleared, it simply means that there is no video evidence to substantiate the claim,” Peters told the television stadium, adding that the governing body would not be looking at any further steps against either team.
The controversy angered the Crusaders and the Bulls replied on Monday they would not submit to a demand for an apology, standing by their claims that the incidents happened.
But where the Bulls fell flat, SANZAR has now asked teams to add a second report after a match, something which was not done by the Bulls at the time. Therefore, there was no other evidence to consider other than the video footage of the match, which offered no help to substantiate the claims.
Peters said this would now become a requirement for any white card action.
“We’ll be telling the teams today that there will be an expectation from SANZAR that if they make a referral on field, they follow it up after the match,” Peters said.
The SANZAR ceo added that in future, any false claims would fall under bringing the game into disrepute, and punished accordingly.
“We would look at teams who are making vexatious complaints, or if we found it to be the case. We may take action under our code of conduct for bringing the game into disrepute.”

you don’t mess with Cantabs, now “vexatious claims” will be dealt with under “bringing the game into disrepute” – does this mean Peters inherently believes the Bulls were talking kak but because they didn’t follow up with a report it doesn’t constitute disrepute?

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-167: I understand the legal difference, however subtle.
In this instance the use of the word proclaim is specifically used to refer to a public announcing of someone’s innocence if they are found not guilty. I’m talking more reputation-ally in this instance. Refer to my post further down where the rape allegations were withdrawn and the stigma still remains.
Just like the Crusaders have not been proclaimed innocent.
So I’m comfortable with the context here.
But hey, Mea Culpa if you disagree. I’m not that bothered either way.

Sure, if we want an average player that kicks most of his goals but offers nothing else, why not put Morne in the team. Goosen is the best 10 in SA, by far. He has already shown he can handle the pressure and presently dictates a game like no other 10 in the world. The Boks are in a position at the moment where we can select a destructive backilne that can rip teams apart. Add that to the potential of our pack and we could be unbeatable within the next year.

Michael – I don’t know what greg peters’ problem is. Is he insinuating that gouging did take place. I’d like a clarification. Alternatively my team should confront him. He’s the same guy who wants an american team in SR isn’t it. The conference sham isn’t enough.

@garth(garth)-173: garth – isnt sarel a bit suspect on defence? i think that hougaard is a much better all round player. good backline. i still have faith in morne and would love to see him take goosen and lambie under his wing and mentor them and hopefully pass on his kicking game.
ShaunSwindon – not a fan of Ruan Pienaar and prefer hougaard as a halve

cant wait to see the boks lineup. hoping meyer can leave his prvincialism baggage at the door and embrace all the SA teams in his line up

For England and Super Series I think he will be conservative. Don’t expect to see many changes from the WC team, except for players that are not available anymore. The year-end tour will be when he start building his team for the rest of his reign.

yeah i agree that we wont see many bolters in the boks and AB’s for the midYear tests. Shame though as its a great opportunity to blood some players.

still not sold on bismark but not really anyone else deserves as much a start as he does.

i’m a kiwi but i love the way the boks used to play. they need to get with a new game plan and start injecting some moves for the backs. brutal big strong forward play then unleashing some back moves
in the last 5 years not once have i seen the boks have a set move for getting the ball to habana (or the other wing). i thought that maybe habana was past it but this season shows he’s still got it. so in my eyes the boks have been squandering their backs for the past 4-5 seasons.
this mentality has to go. boks on offence are only using 8-9 players vs 15 opposition defence. they’re simply out numbered

@man1a(man1a)-182: So true, if players like Habana got the ball more often, then they would be much more inclined to play what is in front of them properly. Over the last few years, its been such a rarity for him to get the ball, that he tries desperately hard to do something special, when it simply isn’t on and more often then not it doesn’t come off making him appear stupid and past it.
