Paul Roos will host Grey PE in the Schoolboy Derby feature match of the weekend.
It’s going to be an exciting clash in Stellenbosch. Both schools head into Saturday’s fixture as two of the few unbeaten 1st XVs in the country, and both will be determined to hold on to that record by picking up a win on Saturday.
Paul Roos are arguably the top team from the Western Cape – some would even say in South Africa – this season. This comes after showing great form at the Grey PE Rugby Festival (winning all two of their matches) and Kearsney Easter Festival (winning two games and drawing one). Last weekend, Paul Roos edged a strong Boland Landbou outfit 17-15 thanks to a late penalty. They’ll be looking for a more convincing showing in their next performance.
It will be a tough task, though, as Grey PE have emerged as the top school from the Eastern Cape. They have won all five of their matches this year, which includes a three-match winning streak at their rugby festival in March and a 60-31 thrashing of Nico Malan last weekend.
Grey PE 1st XV head coach Rory Duncan is expecting a physical game.
‘It’s going to be tough away from home, but the team is confident that we can do the job,’ Duncan told Schoolboy Derby. ‘Paul Roos have been really impressive. They boast a well-balanced team, with a strong pack. There will be a big battle up front.
‘We’ll be looking to play an expansive game, so we can get our speedy wings involved. But that’s only if the conditions allow it. Otherwise, we’ll play according to the match situation.’
Duncan added that he wants a stronger defensive showing from his charges.
‘We haven’t reached out full potential yet, and we hope to do so against Paul Roos. We will have to if we want to win. One area I really want to improve on is our defence – I’m not happy with the fact that we conceded 31 points against Nico Malan last weekend.’
