It was Grey PE’s sixth consecutive win this year – a fantastic start to 2012 for the Eastern Cape school. It was also the result that ended Paul Roos’ unbeaten start to the season, after they won five matches and drew one before this fixture.

It was a close encounter in the first half, as the sides headed into the break with a 13-12 scoreline in the visitors’ favour. However, wing Sergeal Petersen (who represented South Africa in the 100m sprints at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011) starred in the second half as he completed a hat-trick.

Paul Roos grabbed a late try, but couldn’t score any more points as they succumbed to their first loss.

Grey PE 1st XV head coach Rory Duncan (the former Cheetahs and EP Kings lock who retired last year) is enjoying a very successful start to his coaching career. He was delighted with the win on the road, and credited his team’s hard work during the week.

‘We impressed in all facets of play,’ Duncan told Schoolboy Derby. ‘We planned a specific game plan in the week, and it worked out for us. I don’t think you can fault our boys on attack or defence – they did both very well on the day. In the end, our backline play was vital in the win.

‘Our game plan this year allows our wings a lot of space, and Sergeal took his opportunities against Paul Roos.’

Duncan added that the win has given his team a lot of confidence as they prepare for a tough year ahead.

‘After winning all five of our opening games, we were already confident. But this result will obviously make the boys feel even better. But we need to keep working hard. There are still some tough fixtures we need to play, so it doesn’t get any easier.’

Well done to Rory Duncan. This is the right place to start ex-player coaches, unlike so many who walk out of professional playing Rugby and straight into professional coaching at the highest level.
