Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year.
The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May.
The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ...

SA rugby mission heads for the rocks
CRAIG RAY | 25 April, 2012 17:310 Comments
S
THE appetite for sending a delegation to plead South African rugby’s case for a sixth team in next year’s Super rugby appears to be waning because of a lack of leadership.
A four-man delegation consisting of Brand de Villiers (Bulls), Kevin de Klerk (Lions), Brian van Zyl (Sharks) and Cheeky Watson (Kings) was meant to have travelled with South African Rugby Union (SARU) chief executive Jurie Roux to a meeting in Sydney last month to make its case.
But at the last minute they requested more time to study the competition agreement and allegedly work on new proposals for a 16-team competition structure and pulled out of the trip. Roux and SARU deputy president Mark Alexander attended as they had other Sanzar business to attend to.
Now, over a month later, with this year’s competition more than halfway through, there seems to be no leadership within the delegation willing to drive the process.
SARU has consistently indicated that it would assist the teams in delivering its proposals to the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) and New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU), but it had to be driven by the teams.
Numerous messages for De Klerk and Van Zyl were ignored while Cheetahs president Harold Verster, who is not part of the delegation but is one of the interested parties as the outcome might still affect his union, claimed to know “nothing” about the delegation’s next move.
“I’ve had no feedback from them, so I’m a bit in the dark,” Verster said. “No convener was appointed, which I think is part of the problem.”
Watson, who is president of Eastern Province and the in charge of the Southern Kings was equally perplexed: “I’m just an invited guest on this delegation. I know nothing about what their next move will be.”
Brand de Villiers, who was seconded to the delegation because he is a strong negotiator with nearly 20 years experience in the rugby industry, was equally vague.
“We’re waiting for SARU to set up the next meeting with the ARU and NZRFU after we requested a postponement to review all the information we needed,” De Villiers said.
“The delegation has not been shelved but we can’t go there without a good proposal and a solution and that is being driven by Jurie Roux. But it is getting late in the game.”
It seems there is a difference of opinion as to who should be taking charge.
“Discussions are on-going with the franchises around our approach and whether a delegation will advance our cause,” Roux said. “This is a complex issue and we will make an announcement when we have finalised our position.”
This is the first time Roux has publicly questioned whether sending a delegation would help convince SA’s partners in the Sanzar alliance that this country deserves a sixth team.
Sanzar chief executive Greg Peters has never wavered in his belief that adding a sixth SA team as early as 2013 would be virtually impossible. Now that the delegation is a month behind schedule for its proposed meeting with the ARU and NZRFU he’s likely to be even less inclined to believe anything could and would change.
