Catt to coach England backs

Former Test centre Mike Catt will mentor the England backs on the coming tour to South Africa.

Catt has signed a two-month contract which will see him working with head coach Stuart Lancaster until the end of the series against the Springboks. He will start following his final match with current club London Irish.

Catt played 75 times for England and was part of the team that won the 2003 World Cup. While he represented England, he was born in Port Elizabeth and attended Grey High School, and also played rugby for Eastern Province before moving across to the United Kingdom.

The Daily Mirror reports that it is a stop-gap appointment until World Cup-winning assistant coach Wayne Smith joins the coaching staff later this year. Smith is currently working with the Chiefs in the Super Rugby competition, and while the NZRU hopes to keep him in New Zealand, it’s believed he will move to England.

Solid appointment. Catty masterminded the end of Mallett’s winning run while on the pitch and he’ll end any Meyer bull run before it starts.

@Big Hit(Big Hit)-4: I hope your are not being serious! What do you have against Meyer?

^ “Bull-run” Meyer deserves to be taken to the cleaners if he’s going to select the likes of Kirtchner, Olivier, geriatric Matfield who hasn’t played any rugby, the entire Bulls coaching staff and who else. Warning bells are already ringing for me.

@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-7: I agree! But we all live in hope that he will NOT pick: Spies, Olivier and Kirschener. It is till better than anything PDV put out!
