Punch earns Haskell suspension

Punch earns Haskell suspension

James Haskell has been suspended for three weeks for punching during the Highlanders’ match against the Cheetahs.

The loose forward was yellow carded for the offence during the game but a review of the incident saw him gain a steaper punishment from judicial officer Mike Heron. Haskell’s suspension sees him miss all matches up until and including the weekend of 19 May.

Haskell’s guilty plea, remorse shown and his impressive disciplinary record were factors in his sentence being reduced from five to three weeks, Heron said.

    Hehe, 3 weeks

  • 4.kingcorn: Reply to this comment

This is an absolute joke, the guy should have got a minimum 5 weeks and not 3. He didn’t throw one punch but two which ended up causing the player who he punched to be subbed.

  • 5.willievz: Reply to this comment

@kingcorn(kingcorn)-4: Yep, the key is two punches.

    TWO.

He didn’t show any remorse after throwing the first, or realised “oops I did something wrong”. He went for a second, to put icing on the cake.

Thuggery like we’ve never seen before.

How much should lying to the citing commissioner bring him?

“I was told that he has no previous citings and has received only a single yellow card in his professional career (which was not for foul play). ”

He received a one week ban for a head but in Sept 2008.

when a kiwi holds someone back by the jersey it is called blatant cheating
with the due punishment starting at
    public flogging
with a strong case put forward for death by hanging
so lets all take a chill pill
    the Saffa was cheating
    he can consider himself lucky
he didnt cop the severe beating his cheating deserved

How many days did Brad Thorn get for spear tackling John Smit?

    Or Umaga for O’Driscoll?

its no wonder you Saffas maon and whinge, you cant even understand what a spear tackle is..

As opposed to the moaning and whinging for four years about one forward pass and which ever way you look at it, it was illegal so stop trying to justify it.

  • 19.poppa69: Reply to this comment

@willievz(willievz)-16: I agree, and I thought at the time that Brad was lucky to only get what he did… but I have no control over the citing commissioner, and again, the same with Umaga on Odriscoll, but the SAFFA citing commissioner saw nothing in it, what can I do about it?

@Oranjebliksemblou(Oranjebliksemblou)-18: its funny, you all go on about Brycie, but he was still better than barnes in that game… not one penalty for NZ in the 2nd half, when we had the same amount of possession as you guys did… yet most here thought barnes was magnificent that day, like I though Bryce was superb in 11…

now, if you want to be objective, i would agree that both refs had very poor games and probably cost BOTH teams a chance to progress… but it seems none of you had a problem with barnes, but did so much with Bryce… and most state all they want is consistency? do you see the flaw in their argument? probably not..

Willievz & OJBSB – try this link and see if it looks any better than Haskell’s punch or Thornes drop etc – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps7GtXfVZ14. No penalty and cleared by the SA citing team after the match even though as per Haskell and Umanga etc, the payer was taken off the ground.

Bottom line is that these things happen in all teams, and if you want to be provoking like the Cheetahs flanker on Haskell or J Smit on Thorne then don’t moan if you get sorted out. The you tube link however really does show a cheap shot.

a spear tackle could break a players neck, paralysing him. A punch, at worst, could break a jaw or knock out a player.

but yeah, of course. If a punch lands on a whining Yappie it’s way way worse than a spear tackle. Poor Haskell could have broken his pinky.

That is a fair punishment i believe.
Of course there will be the odd cry baby that thinks he should have got a lot more time but 3 weeks is fair.
Especially when and this goes against all of (houston, we have a problem) crusade that only Kiwis cheat but Haskell was being taken out of play by a cheating South African, all there to see.
    But punching has no place.

Right at the end, in the wide shot, bottom right corner of the screen. The first punch lands at 3:26 and the second one hits at 3:29. They show them again at 3:36 and 3:39. Both shots land flush, and the second one, which is more front-on, looks particularly vicious.

there we go the second one hit the mark.
Probably make haskill think before he reacts and may even make the cheetahs player think before he tries to take a player out of the play, illegally.

You NZ’ders have such double standards.

Why is there outcry when Bob Skinstad refered to the high tackle on Mvovo as ‘coconut’ tackle, calling him racist. Yet, you kiwis including your administrators call South Africans ‘Jarpies’?

Best punch I’ve ever seen was the short right landed by Gert Smal on Gary Knight of the NZ Cavaliers at Ellis Park in 1986. Didn’t travel far but my goodness Knight dropped like a sack of potatoes. It was early in the game (about the 7th minute) & both of them got sent to the cooler which in those days was behind the posts. It took them a while to wake Knight up though and get him there…

I personally don’t have a problem being called a ‘Jarpie’ as long as the intent is not derogatory. But my problem is Skinstad was accused of making racist remarks when he had no derogatory intent at all. ~ double standards.

Hurricane, I acctually think you have some valid rugby comments, and am not saying you are racist. I just have a problem with the attack on Skinstad.

  • 40.poppa69: Reply to this comment

@BrumbiesBoy(BrumbiesBoy)-37: actually surprised Smal had the courage to hit him head on, most of the punches in that tour were kinghits when the player wasnt looking, much like Shelfords one Hurricane has highlighted..

  • 42.>^..^< katman: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-36: It’s certainly meant as a derogatory term, I can assure you. Same as dutch.man. Some Afrikaans guys have chosen to laugh it off instead of rise to the taunt, and good for them. But that doesn’t make it any less offensive. Once you know and you still use it, it’s pretty much a racist intent. Same with the coconut thing. Now that Skinstadt is aware of it, he’d be a racist to use it in that context again.

I just don’t like it when some people climb on their high horse and point fingers at others, and don’t even look at themselves (kiwis, hint hint ;) ).

Well the Abs were a better team in 2007 and yet look what happened.
2011 was actually a true reflection on how the rugby teams were from 2008-11.
Australia are a better team than the Boks and have been over the last few years.
When the ABs played the Ozzies in the semi final, no team had played that good all year.
ABs deserved the RWC 2011. You think t was rigged yet, i think it wasnt. You have no proof at all really.
