Punch earns Haskell suspension

James Haskell has been suspended for three weeks for punching during the Highlanders’ match against the Cheetahs.

The loose forward was yellow carded for the offence during the game but a review of the incident saw him gain a steaper punishment from judicial officer Mike Heron. Haskell’s suspension sees him miss all matches up until and including the weekend of 19 May.

Haskell’s guilty plea, remorse shown and his impressive disciplinary record were factors in his sentence being reduced from five to three weeks, Heron said.

Some terms like Dutch man, jarpie and Soutie are mildly derogatory, but not racist. Others like sheeps*agger are just crude insults.
Racism is based on derogatory terms based on the colour/race of the person.

@David(David)-52: Not true. Whether you prefer to call it an ethnic slur or a racist insult or simply “mildly derogatory”, there is no difference between words like Japie and Dutch.man and other well-known taboo phrases aimed at specific races or cultures such as Chink, D.arky, H.ymie, K.yke, Nip. P.aki, R.aghead, S.pic, W.etback and Wop, not to mention the N and K words.

Hurricane, I appreciate your opinion, and I agree with you, over the past 20 years the ABs have consistently been the best team on the planet.

But the beauty of a competition like the RWC should be that any team can win it, given that on the day they play better winning rugby. Otherwise we might as well just have IRB rankings and no RWC.

Going into a competition like the RWC, teams plan far in advance, and aim to peak physically and mentally at the right time. I believe, for NZ’s relative (to their rugby prowess) unsuccess have got this wrong and SA have got this very right.

As a result, I totally disagree with you Aus were better than SA. With any other reffing display, we would have smashed them. SA has a history of not performing before world cups (except with Citch Christie). It’s called periodisation (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_periodization for a simple explaination).

I think the Aus v SA match was fixed and the NZ v Fra final may have been.
The strangest thing is BL was awarded NZ ref of the year, after he admitted himself how poor he was.

Often statistics are misleading, but sometimes they can highlight the obvious.

    Yep got it.
I am with you about its a tournament where a few teams have the potential to win.
Its a tournament where you dont have to be the best team in the world to win it.
All you need to do is put together 8 weeks of great rugby and the cup is yours.
That alone adds to the excitment or even some worrying times.

About the SA vs OZ comment, i stand by it.
OZ have won 6 of the last 8 games against the Boks. Ozzie is a good team and just watch, this years Champions cup ( what ever they call it now) they will show again why they are a problem to both SA and NZ.

    SA VS OZ semi final.
OZ spent 3 minutes in Boks quarter.
Boks spent over 11 minutes in Ozzie quarter.
You cant tell me that was rigged when the Boks spent so much time in the Ozzie quarter.
The again, do you think the Boks took a payment to lose the game?
Makes you winder why they had the best kicker in the owrld yet only 1 drop kick i think. None in the last 15 mins.

NZ vs France game was close but honestly if Piri kicked those penalties ( I think he missed 4-5) in the first half, the game would have been a walk over.
But hats of the France they stuck in there and played a good game.

But if you like contraversy then NZ vs france 2007 RWC would be right up there dont you think?
No team ever has held there line against the ABs in the last 15 minutes as did the French in that game. Not one penalty or free kick in 40 mins of rugby. I saw alot of infringing yet nothing called.
Sort of like the Boks vs OZ quarter dont you think?

    Threatening Boycotts??
oh boy you really try to make your argument sound better than it really is.

The Boycott idea was due to the fact that some teams are struggling just to make it to the RWC.
Yet the IRB makes millions on tv rights and advertising.
This was backed by a few countries as well.

Anyway please provide the proof of the RWC being rigged.
If your just going to say the refs then i can show you a few games in this Super 15 thats just as bad.
Actually i can go all the way back to 2007 RWC and show you rigged or dodgy reffing.

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-72: Yep I agree the parallels bewteen RWC07 NZ v Fra and RWC11 SA v Aus. I just think we are looking at it from a SA v NZ perspectives.

I remember watching the 07 game thinking the ABs will pull a try out soon but it never came. I rewatched the game sober, and that pass where france scored was forward. I can understand kiwis feeling agreived after that. I do think there were some questionable breakdown decisions too. I do think WB got it wrong.

But I don’t think it was as blatant as the 11 Aus v SA game. Maybe I am biased? I work in London with a number of foreigners who watched the game too. So I would expected their views to be less clouded by bias, because to be honest they did not care who won either way. And all of them could not believe the reffing display.

The issue I have is this. Long before the RWC11, my brother and I said NZ will win it, but if the refs are fair SA will win. Leading up to the RWC, Richie M was getting away with murder, a long with a lot of offside play on attack (mainly by the Franks bros). What we could not understand is why the refs did not pick on these obvious transgressions.

IMO the ABs are like Brazil of football. Because you play entertaining rugby and are very good, you are generally have the neuterals support. The refs also tend to lean in your favour too. Have you seen some of the stats produced by Bob Dwyer on the 2010 trinations? Although to my mind, 2003 trinations was an appalling year as far as reffing bias is concerned. It does not help when the Aus and NZ refs send ‘Yarpie’ emails either ;)

Also, if you look at non-english speaking teams (Fra, Arg, SA, Ita), they do tend to get a raw deal from the refs too. I have noticed, when SA has an English speaking coach (Christie, White) the refs are easier on us as opposed to (PDivvy, Strauli, Maakgraaf, etc.) Lets hope Mayer (Afrikaans) does not recieve thsi treatement too. Alsthough in his favour, he seems like a good communicator and has a very likeable deminor.

Well we could go on forever here.
Fact is a RWC will have controversy no matter what.
Every single one of them has had a problem.
2007 RWC, we were told to man up and stop talking rubbish. WB reffed a good game and finally penalised McCaw, thats why we lost.
Then in 2010 i think WB reffed a SA vs OZ game,SA lost then all of a sudden WB was the worst ref in the world.
The refs will get it wrong, Brycie said he did and apologised, of course that did little. WB said nothing, he went on his arrogant way.

I think its all to do with the way rugby is.
We have now got a game that has the most rules than any game.
One day a player will get away with something, then the next week he gets pinged all day long.
So many calls can go to either team.
Rugby rules is bringing the game down.
Bring back the ruck and lets get going

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-92: Agree, rugby is too complicated. Should have less rules, especially at the breakdown.

    How’s this?

    Only rules at breakdown:
    - come in from hind most feet (gate) as it currently is.
    - if the ball does not come out, team going forward gets the ball.
    - no other rules

Allow hands in ruck, raking, etc.

Similar to how it was played in the 80′s.
