Rebel cited for illegal hit
4 May 2012
Rebels lock Luke Jones has been cited for foul play during Friday’s match against the Bulls.
Jones lifted Bulls wing Bjorn Basson and continued with that tackle so that Basson’s neck and shoulder region contacted the ground while his legs were still in the air.
This contravenes Law 10.4 (j) lifting a player from the ground and either dropping or driving that player’s head and/or upper body into the ground whilst the player’s feet are off the ground.
Referee Andrew Lees issued a yellow and white card on the field after consultation with his assistant. Upon further review of the match footage the citing commissioner deemed the incident had met the red card threshold for foul play.
The citing is to be considered in the first instance by Sanzar Duty Judicial Officer Mike Heron.

Typical. Only the poor Aussies get cited. Apparently Flip was no angel but as usual nothing will happen because he is Saffa.

This was perhaps the clearest example of a spear tackle you will ever see. Absolutely textbook. It should have been a red, as the citing commissioner has already concluded. I expect a lengthy ban. Digby Ioane got 5 weeks for a much more gentle tackle.

The dude who threw the punch…we should expect to see him get 4 weeks!
As saffas say it should have been an automatic red and the ref saw it.
The tackle was bad…..would not say it is the best example of a spear tackle. The landing was the example of a spear tackle but to be classified as a true spear tackle he would had to have been driven into the ground.

isnt a spear tackle less dangerous than a punch ?

4. Wallabie. No mate you can throw quite a few punches and just get a yellow it seems. Also only 3 week ban even if you cause stitches

Why did only Hougaard get a red card for his tip tackle and everyone else gets a yellow?
I must say the quality of the refs this season has been shocking in almost every game

what i did notice was that this ref let the game flow nicely, he didnt blow pedantically, and the yellow was not that bad a choice, considering he showed the white card as well. he did miss some basics initially, the aussie jumpers in the first three lineouts were taking the ball on their outside shoulders, clearly and quite badly skew, but he wasnt biased, and had a good game imho.
Have your say
