Double blow for Bulls
6 May 2012
The Bulls have lost flank Jacques Potgieter and prop Frik Kirsten to injury after their first tour match against the Rebels last Friday.
According to SuperSport.com, Potgieter suffered a knee injury during the Bulls’ 41-35 win over the Rebels and medical scans have revealed that the player will be out for six to eight weeks. Kirtsen broke his hand after coming off the bench in Melbourne and will be sidelined for six weeks. Both forwards will make the trip back to South Africa.
The Bulls have called up prop Rayno Gerber and flank Gerrit-Jan van Velze to bolster their front row and loose forward stocks respectively ahead of their next tour fixture against the Waratahs.
Prop Dean Greyling will also return home after the birth of his first child. This means Dawie Steyn will start against the Waratahs next weekend as he is the only loosehead specialist in the current squad.

The injury curse strikes again.Potgieter is a massive blow for the Bulls.Britney Spies needs to pull his finger now.

Let’s hope Stegmann’s hammie holds up then.
I see that Wynand Olivier is also out for the Waratahs game with sore ribs.
Gonna be an interesting one.

@stormerforlife1(stormerforlife1)-1:
Stander and Stegman will make a good flanking combo, with Arno Gerber retaining his bench duties.

Fortunately it is not one of the NZ teams. Still think the Bulls are good enough to put it past the Tahs. Congrats on the five points and topping SA conference…

Quite a lot of knee injuries in our game nowadays.Is it a question of conditioning or is it just one of those injuries that can’t be prevented?Might be a silly question,but just asking.

All jokes aside about Spies, but he really needs to step up to the plate against the Waratahs this Friday.

The Bulls have beaten the Waratahs the last 6 consecutive games, including 2 in Sydney.

@stormerforlife1(stormerforlife1)-5: Because human ancestors developed bipedalism (walking on two legs not four) recently in evolutionary time (4.2-3.9 million years ago) injuries associated with this development are common.
Our knees, as well as our backs and pelvises, support our full body weight as opposed to sharing it with four limbs. Hence these parts also suffer common injuries.
As to whether they can be prevented, I think constant physio in strengthening your ligaments, tendons etc. can help, but the weakness will always be there.

@Bagel(Bagel)-9: Thanks Bagel.

That’s the way it goes. Front row is a bit of a problem.

Potgieter is a big loss, but rather him than Stander, who is playing fantastic rugby at the moment. Along with Coetzee of the Sharks and Kolisi and Carr of the Stormers, our upcoming loose forward talent seems to be very well stocked.

It’s a pity Spoes never seems to be injured. Not surprising at all though as self preservation sums up his philosophy and approach to the game.
