Rebels lock banned for Basson bash

Rebels lock Ryan Jones was suspended for two weeks after his dangerous tackle on Bulls wing Bjorn Basson.

The incident happened in the 25th minute of the Bulls’ 41-35 win over the Rebels in Melbourne on Friday. Jones was yellow-carded for tipping Basson in the tackle, while referee Andrew Lees also issued a white card for the movement to be reviewed.

Jones was sited as a result and was found guilty at the disciplinary hearing by Sanzar judicial officer Mike Heron on Sunday. Heron acknowledged Jones’s clean record, guilty plea and his immediate concern for the uninjured Basson, and reduced what would have been a four-match ban.

Jones will miss the Rebels’ next two fixtures against the Crusaders and Force.

    Well, at least he was immediately apologetic and put in a guilty plea. I’m glad he had his sentence reduced.

    The tackle should be judged solely on its merits or demerits in this case, this other extraneous stuff shouldn’t be taken into consideration. Two weeks too light, give him the maximum.

    @Te Rangatira(Te Rangatira)-2:

    Agreed. There should be one rule for all……….if its a spear/tip tackle you get 4 weeks or whatever, no if, but’s or maybe’s…………this other subjective stuff is all BS. Most people are contrite when bust!

    The lack of consistency is appalling. This tackle was far worse than the one that got Digby Ioane banned for five weeks.
