Gold gets top job at Bath

Former Springboks forwards coach Gary Gold has been appointed Bath’s director of rugby.

Gold has just completed a five-month stint in the same role with Newcastle, and he replaces Sir Ian McGeechan, who leaves the Premiership club after only one season in charge of Bath. Gold’s appointment will be officially announced on Tuesday.

Gold has enjoyed success in the Premiership with Leicester before returning to South Africa to coach the Stormers and Western Province. A four-year stint with the Springboks followed in which time he was part of a team that won a series against the touring Lions as well as the 2009 Tri-Nations.

The BBC reports that Gold’s staff will include former London Irish prop Neal Hatley and ex-England defence coach Mike Ford.

I think you will find that he was previously at London Irish?

Anyway Bath is a big club so well done to Mr Gold. Another talent that was under utilised in SA but recognised elsewhere.

    Its funny.
Gold coached the Boks forwards for 4 years and I scarcely knew anything about him, his history, pedigree etc.
Obviously didnt make too much of an impact on me.
I suppose I could have google him and found out more but I had a huge problem with actually giving a fk.

Well done to him. As a forwards specialist I’m sure he’ll enjoy the rugby up there and obviously he knows the scene from his previous stint with London Irish.

That’s one dude I’m not that worried about saying goodbye to. We got our pound of flesh out of him and after 4 years with the Boks with nothing immediate awaiting him on this side it’s probably the right thing to do.
