Naka backs Van Zyl at 9
9 May 2012
Scrumhalf Piet van Zyl has been preferred to Tewis de Bruyn for the Cheetahs’ important match against the Stormers this Saturday.
De Bruyn started at No 9 last week but has been replaced by Van Zyl for this particular match. The more experienced player has been included on the bench, but it is Van Zyl’s running game that has been preferred first up.
Coach Naka Drotské hasn’t made any other changes to the match 22 that faced the Force last week.
Meanwhile, Boland flyhalf Elgar Watts is training with the side in Bloemfontein and will come into the squad if one of Sias Ebersohn or Riaan Smit are injured.
Cheetahs – 15 Hennie Daniller, 14 Cameron Jacobs, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Andries Strauss, 11 Willie le Roux, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Piet van Zyl, 8 Philip van der Walt, 7 Justin Downey, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Izak van der Westhuizen, 4 George Earle, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (c), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen
Subs: 16 Hercu Liebenberg, 17 Trevor Nyakane, 18 Andries Ferreira, 19 Ashley Johnson, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Riaan Smit, 22 Philip Snyman

Why on earth Naka played the useless de Bryn ahead of v/Zyl in the first place is beyond me. v/Zyl is twice the player

This could be an interesting game. If Goosen was there i reckon the Cheetahs would have run the Stormers ragged. The Stormers don’t really do well against the unpredictable running teams like the Chiefs and Crusaders, i see the Cheetahs in the same vein!!

Should have happened against the Force. When he came on last week the Cheetahs really looked good, still needs to work on his tactical game a bit but I will take him over de Bruyn any day.

De Bruyn is more robust, better defense, far better kicking game and general,
Van Zyl the new Pretorius, plenty of go and live wire action.. very zippy quick tempo game, great go forward option
BUT
But when Naka pulled De Bruyn and Goosen went down vs Highlanders the FS wheels came OFF in a big way.. If De Bruyn had stayed on I reckon Cheetahs would have won..
similar happened last year with Pretorius, Cheetahs were on top and then Pretorius poor defense and solo high jinx activity cost Cheetahs the win in quite a few games.. De Bruyn steadies the ship, Van Zyl rocks the boat.
Have your say
