Saffa to start for Canes

South African-born prop Reg Goodes will make his first Super Rugby start for the Hurricanes against the Highlanders this Saturday.

Goodes was born in Witbank, and his family emigrated to New Zealand in 2006. He made his debut for Wellington in 2010 at the age of 18, and played his first game for the Hurricanes off the bench two weeks ago.

The match against the Highlanders marks his first start at this level.

Charlie Ngatai has been bracketed with Tim Bateman at inside centre while one of Tusi Pisi or Daniel Kirkpatrick will sit on the bench.

Hurricanes – 15 Andre Taylor, 14 Cory Jane, 13 Conrad Smith (c), 12 Charlie Ngatai/Tim Bateman, 11 Julian Savea, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara, 8 Victor Vito, 7 Karl Lowe, 6 Faifili Levave, 5 Jason Eaton, 4 Jeremy Thrush, 3 Ben May, 2 Dane Coles, 1 Reggie Goodes.
Subs: 16 Motu Matu’u, 17 Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, 18 Brad Shields, 19 Jack Lam, 20 Chris Eaton, 21 Tusi Pisi/Daniel Kirkpatrick, 22 Tim Bateman/Alapati Leiua.

Almost scored a great try last week from a chip/chase. Great mobility for a prop.

Three months ago Hurricanes prop Reggie Goodes thought his chances of playing Super Rugby this season were over.

The 20-year-old had torn the ligament off his left shoulder in a pre-season match against the Chiefs and was facing the prospect of six months on the sideline.

He had even spoken to Hurricanes professional development manager Steve Symonds about making plans to study after being told he would require surgery and months to recover.

“But I went to see the surgeon and he said you can rehab it and you should be fine,” said Goodes.

So on Saturday night, after 10 weeks of intensive rehab and strengthening the shoulder, the South African-born front-rower will be making his run-on debut for the Hurricanes against the Highlanders in Dunedin.

“It’s really a privilege. It will probably be the best day of my life on Saturday playing against the Highlanders,” said a smiling Goodes of his first Super Rugby start.

The young loosehead impressed with both his scrummaging and work at the breakdown during the pre-season and has carried that form into the two appearances he has made off the bench against the Chiefs and Blues in the past two weeks.

His efforts have certainly impressed coach Mark Hammett.

“He did very well pre-season and to be quite frank when he got that injury he was No.1. He probably would have got the first start,” Hammett said.

“But he didn’t. He got the injury and he’s worked really hard to get back. We know what a good player he is, not just in his core roles with lifting and scrummaging, but he has a great ability to jackal (steal the ball at the breakdown) and clean out and he’s a very good (ball) carrier.”

Goodes and fellow front-rowers Dane Coles and Ben May can certainly expect to be tested by an opposition front row of Jamie Mackintosh, Andrew Hore and Chris King.

But Goodes is not afraid of mixing it with them.

“From what I’ve seen from the last game we played against them they are really physical up front so I’ll be trying to get a good physical battle with them this week,” he said.

Goodes run-on debut means May shifts to the tighthead in what is otherwise a very settled Hurricanes’ starting XV.
