Canes rally past Landers

GARETH DUNCAN watched wing Julian Savea score a 74th-minute try to clinch the Hurricanes a 26-20 comeback victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The match-winning try from the Hurricanes speedster was a fantastic effort. After a poor tactical kick from Highlanders reserve scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan, the visitors had a late opportunity to counterattack. After spreading the ball wide through the backs, Savea broke the opposition’s defensive line, brushed off two attempted tackles and outran the covering defence to dive over in the corner.

Flyhalf Beauden Barrett then slotted the difficult conversion to finish the match with a flawless goal-kicking display (six from six). This forced a then fatigued Highlanders outfit, who had just returned from their South African tour during the week, to search for a converted try for victory at the death. They failed in their pursuit and the Hurricanes held on for a hard-fought, late win.

This fixture was expected to be an exciting attacking spectacle, but both teams adopted a strong tactical kicking game instead of an expansive approach to find favourable field position. The Highlanders did this effectively in the first half, and capitalised on their chances to score two tries via pivot Chris Noakes and flank Adam Thomson. Noakes added all the extras.

The Hurricanes remained within reach at half-time as Barrett kicked three penalties, which saw a 14-9 scoreline at the break in the hosts’ favour.

Noakes extended the Highlanders’ lead to eight points with an early three-pointer in the second stanza, before the Hurricanes hit right back with a controversial try. Flank Faifili Levave dotted down seconds after the kick-off, but replays showed that lock Jason Eaton was tackled into touch during the build-up. The officials missed this, and the try was allowed.

This created a tight finish to the game. Barrett and reserve flyhalf Mike Delany traded late penalties as the Highlanders held on to a slender advantage. Savea’s brilliant run then sealed an important away win – one that boosts the Hurricanes’ play-off hopes on the overall log.

True, as a SAfrican I have no link to them
I’m inspired by how they’ve gone from a last place finish in ’96 to seven times champs. From a 10th place finish in ’01 to winning 13/13 the following year. I’m inspired by their consistency over the years. By the way they play the game
It goes beyond my support of them as a rugby team. And its not about them being a NZ team. Its the story behind the team

Always telling people to look back over the thread… always a reason to return serve…

The dogged, near zealot, repetition is very skopesque.

A bit too close i must say but again the Hurricanes seems to have proven alot of people on this site as wrong. Written off in the beginning but have done really good.

You’re not inspired by anything. You just enjoy supporting a team that hardly ever loses – some people follow the easy path to success like flies follow shiyit. Very shallow.

Bloody hell, even Crusaders risk with their wellbeing, if they don not win today.

No connection whatsoever either. Never even been to NZ. How bizarre. But hey, if you want to have a smile on your face every weekend, “support” the best team no matter which country they hail from! Easy, huh?

there were some crunching tackles too..

@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-44: Well, they should beat the Force and maybe get that bonus point but I not convinced. They have not “evolved” from the “use Alberts and Deysel to run over people” game plan, but I’ll tune in this afternoon.

    thanks for proving my point..

  • 77.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-71: Big difference Hurri. It’s natural to support the underdog. In the next game, I would like the Rebels to beat the Crusaders. Just because I can. Doesn’t mean I am a supporter of the Rebels though.

    I support one team only.

But these saffas who flock to the Crusaders are a sad, traitorous joke. Nothing better than all the Man U devotees out there interested only in the easy results. A bit sad isn’t it? Farken pin your colours to the mast and stick to your team through thick and thin.

Funny that there doesn’t appear to be any SA Blues fans or SA Highlanders fans? Funny that none flock to the Force or the Waratahs?

How can you ignore your own team?

Easy, they want to smile each weekend. Shallow. I have no time for these people.

  • 78.Nils: Reply to this comment

@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-77: IHMO, this is not about the “winning team” – hey, Stormers are winning team, too, and don’t forget the Bulls, another winning team.

Aren’t they supporting Crusaders because they traditionally beat up Saffa big boys – for that reason alone?

  • 79.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@Nils(Nils)-78: that is a reason. Some support them so they can gloat (not real support anyway).

But Crusaders have 7 trophies. Stormers have none.

I personally find it unimaginable not supporting my province. That’s where my ties are, I feel my support deep down. Could never bring myself to support any other team, not even if my team were somehow relegated. I would then just be a casual and neutral observer.

  • 80.Nils: Reply to this comment

@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-79: Good on you (about supporting own province).

I was using the term “winners” more for win-lose ratio rather than trophies. Stormers/Bulls are runing nicely, while Blues and Brumbies both have 2 trophies, I would have to be pressed really mafia style to say they are ‘winners’. :)

I have All Black supporting mates who were staunch Blues supporters in the early to mid 90′s. When the trophies tried up they all supported the Crusaders.

    understand Wooden.
My Mum ( mummy ) supports the Scots even when the ABs are playing them. To this day i still dont understand why but its her choice but it really does not bother me as i know the Scots dont really stand a chance against the ABs, well normally.
Now if she supported Oz or South Africa, that would be more of a problem and would make me angry as well. Cos i know these teams are a threat to the ABs.

  • 94.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-93: I hear you. I don’t think anyone would really care if these fakes supported, say, the Force or the Highlanders.

Can you imagine if about 15% of Wellington started “supporting” the Bulls? Wearing their jerseys, getting drunk at match day and booing the home kicker, flinging rude insults to the other home team fans and just generally trying to be as intentionally obnoxious as possible? It would drive you mad.

  • 95.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

    @Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-90: Lol. I am not suprised.

If the day ever comes that the Crusaders are surpassed as the “best” team, the fakes will flock to the new “best” team in a heartbeat.

    @wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-94:
So it wouldnt bother you if Viewer supported the Blues or Highlanders?

  • 98.wooden spoon: Reply to this comment

@Hurricane(Hurricane)-97: not as much no, I would still find it a little bit weird for a Saffa to be supporting a NZ team (the enemy) but I would be more easily convinced that there was a genuine reason for the support, like family in the area, etc.

Fakes don’t support losing teams, that’s the basic principle and that’s why every fake and his/her dog supports the Crusaders.
