Canes rally past Landers
12 May 2012
GARETH DUNCAN watched wing Julian Savea score a 74th-minute try to clinch the Hurricanes a 26-20 comeback victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin.
The match-winning try from the Hurricanes speedster was a fantastic effort. After a poor tactical kick from Highlanders reserve scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan, the visitors had a late opportunity to counterattack. After spreading the ball wide through the backs, Savea broke the opposition’s defensive line, brushed off two attempted tackles and outran the covering defence to dive over in the corner.
Flyhalf Beauden Barrett then slotted the difficult conversion to finish the match with a flawless goal-kicking display (six from six). This forced a then fatigued Highlanders outfit, who had just returned from their South African tour during the week, to search for a converted try for victory at the death. They failed in their pursuit and the Hurricanes held on for a hard-fought, late win.
This fixture was expected to be an exciting attacking spectacle, but both teams adopted a strong tactical kicking game instead of an expansive approach to find favourable field position. The Highlanders did this effectively in the first half, and capitalised on their chances to score two tries via pivot Chris Noakes and flank Adam Thomson. Noakes added all the extras.
The Hurricanes remained within reach at half-time as Barrett kicked three penalties, which saw a 14-9 scoreline at the break in the hosts’ favour.
Noakes extended the Highlanders’ lead to eight points with an early three-pointer in the second stanza, before the Hurricanes hit right back with a controversial try. Flank Faifili Levave dotted down seconds after the kick-off, but replays showed that lock Jason Eaton was tackled into touch during the build-up. The officials missed this, and the try was allowed.
This created a tight finish to the game. Barrett and reserve flyhalf Mike Delany traded late penalties as the Highlanders held on to a slender advantage. Savea’s brilliant run then sealed an important away win – one that boosts the Hurricanes’ play-off hopes on the overall log.

True, as a SAfrican I have no link to them
I’m inspired by how they’ve gone from a last place finish in ’96 to seven times champs. From a 10th place finish in ’01 to winning 13/13 the following year. I’m inspired by their consistency over the years. By the way they play the game
It goes beyond my support of them as a rugby team. And its not about them being a NZ team. Its the story behind the team

Always telling people to look back over the thread… always a reason to return serve…
The dogged, near zealot, repetition is very skopesque.

@poppa69(poppa69)-42:
Yep, it was a good game for us.
A bit too close i must say but again the Hurricanes seems to have proven alot of people on this site as wrong. Written off in the beginning but have done really good.

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-51: see ya po.es..
run along and pretend to kill yourself again
12 May 2012, 11:28 am
You’re not inspired by anything. You just enjoy supporting a team that hardly ever loses – some people follow the easy path to success like flies follow shiyit. Very shallow.
12 May 2012, 11:28 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-50: True again. A lot to play for all three.
Bloody hell, even Crusaders risk with their wellbeing, if they don not win today.
12 May 2012, 11:29 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-53: whats the matter Wooden square, dont like it when Im right huh? ag shampies..
12 May 2012, 11:30 am
No connection whatsoever either. Never even been to NZ. How bizarre. But hey, if you want to have a smile on your face every weekend, “support” the best team no matter which country they hail from! Easy, huh?
12 May 2012, 11:30 am
@poppa69(poppa69)-58: you’re such a bore.
12 May 2012, 11:30 am
small minded bore.
12 May 2012, 11:31 am
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-54: Savea seems to be gaining confidence at this level, looked for work all night tonight.. thought Lowe was great and Conrad without a doubt the best 13 in the game.. even Goodes seemed to help the scrum
there were some crunching tackles too..
12 May 2012, 11:31 am
Repeats himself like a stuck pig on a spit. How small must the brain be!
12 May 2012, 11:31 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-59: Oh, so you admit, Crusaders are the best? 8)

good on you princess.
Would you like an AK47 with your chips?
12 May 2012, 11:32 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-60: so are you, if you dont like what I post read past it.. but no, youre always so quick to jump in, which is laughable… guess I get under your skin too..
beautiful…
12 May 2012, 11:33 am
@Nils(Nils)-64: their record speaks for itself. 7 times champions. No wonder they have a few lost flies buzzing around them
@poppa69(poppa69)-66: more boring drivel from you. Nothing changes. Return that serve boy.
12 May 2012, 11:33 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-63: lol a saffa trying to say someone else has a small brain..
gees, nice try window licker… now run along, youre ruining the thread..
12 May 2012, 11:34 am
@poppa69(poppa69)-66: You know, just serving on and on is so frustrating without someone coming to rescue and return the serve, you must see how relieved Fern & Co were you came in. Ha.
12 May 2012, 11:34 am
@poppa69(poppa69)-68: “lol a saffa trying to say someone else has a small brain..”
Racist pig.
12 May 2012, 11:35 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-56:
Whats shallow is the road you are going down.
Give him a break. Anyone can support whatever team they want to.
The other week i jumped on and you guys were all preying and supporting the
Reds against the Saders.
12 May 2012, 11:35 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-44: Well, they should beat the Force and maybe get that bonus point but I not convinced. They have not “evolved” from the “use Alberts and Deysel to run over people” game plan, but I’ll tune in this afternoon.
12 May 2012, 11:36 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-70: hows that racist? you are the epitome of small brained Saffas…
but what to expect from third world citizens?
12 May 2012, 11:37 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-67: But you know they haven’t been exactly the main favourites in the recent years. Time of their dynasty is gone – for now.
12 May 2012, 11:38 am
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-71: And Frogs, remember?
12 May 2012, 11:38 am
small brained saffa = racism?
thanks for proving my point..
12 May 2012, 11:39 am
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-71: Big difference Hurri. It’s natural to support the underdog. In the next game, I would like the Rebels to beat the Crusaders. Just because I can. Doesn’t mean I am a supporter of the Rebels though.
I support one team only.
But these saffas who flock to the Crusaders are a sad, traitorous joke. Nothing better than all the Man U devotees out there interested only in the easy results. A bit sad isn’t it? Farken pin your colours to the mast and stick to your team through thick and thin.
Funny that there doesn’t appear to be any SA Blues fans or SA Highlanders fans? Funny that none flock to the Force or the Waratahs?
How can you ignore your own team?
Easy, they want to smile each weekend. Shallow. I have no time for these people.
12 May 2012, 11:43 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-77: IHMO, this is not about the “winning team” – hey, Stormers are winning team, too, and don’t forget the Bulls, another winning team.
Aren’t they supporting Crusaders because they traditionally beat up Saffa big boys – for that reason alone?
12 May 2012, 11:46 am
@Nils(Nils)-78: that is a reason. Some support them so they can gloat (not real support anyway).
But Crusaders have 7 trophies. Stormers have none.
I personally find it unimaginable not supporting my province. That’s where my ties are, I feel my support deep down. Could never bring myself to support any other team, not even if my team were somehow relegated. I would then just be a casual and neutral observer.
12 May 2012, 11:51 am
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-79: Good on you (about supporting own province).
I was using the term “winners” more for win-lose ratio rather than trophies. Stormers/Bulls are runing nicely, while Blues and Brumbies both have 2 trophies, I would have to be pressed really mafia style to say they are ‘winners’.
12 May 2012, 11:54 am
@Nils(Nils)-80: blues have 3 nils, same as the bulls..
12 May 2012, 11:55 am
@poppa69(poppa69)-81: Sincere apologies for my Alzheimer’s.
12 May 2012, 11:58 am
Sont the keewees on here have friends or a social life?
What is the time there now?
What a bunch of strokers.
12 May 2012, 12:01 pm
@Nils(Nils)-82: no need to… I just like reminding Saffas that the worst NZ team this year still has as many trophies as the best SA team in super rugby ever
12 May 2012, 12:01 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-83: Sheesh, Fern, your broken record sounds like you are ugly girl standing at the dance hall wall craving for someone to invite for a dance and meanwhile trying to look like you couldn’t care less.
12 May 2012, 12:02 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-83: phew, youre still alive Fern? was getting worried for a minute there…
12 May 2012, 12:02 pm
@poppa69(poppa69)-84: The only, mate, the ONLY!
12 May 2012, 12:04 pm
@ 20.?Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19
Um duuuuuuuuuuuh Captain Obvious. Kings Park is called the Shark Tank and hence my reference to the “Tank” as “Aquarium”. Too higher grade for you?
12 May 2012, 12:10 pm
@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-83:
I have a family, all in bed, we have sky throughout the 5 bedrooms.
I am watching the rugby, no one else likes the rugby here so they all go to there rooms.
Spent most my life going out and partying, time to settle down and answer dumbass questions like yours.
12 May 2012, 12:13 pm
I have All Black supporting mates who were staunch Blues supporters in the early to mid 90′s. When the trophies tried up they all supported the Crusaders.
12 May 2012, 12:13 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-79: You’re contradicting yourself mate, in #77 you say “…stick to your team through thick and thin,” and now you talk about being a casual observer when they get relegated.
Make up your mind please…
12 May 2012, 12:21 pm
@BrumbiesBoy(BrumbiesBoy)-91: don’t be dumb mate. If my team were heaven forbid somehow relegated (i.e were not part of the tournament) how can I support them in the tournament?
12 May 2012, 12:21 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-77:
understand Wooden.
My Mum ( mummy ) supports the Scots even when the ABs are playing them. To this day i still dont understand why but its her choice but it really does not bother me as i know the Scots dont really stand a chance against the ABs, well normally.
Now if she supported Oz or South Africa, that would be more of a problem and would make me angry as well. Cos i know these teams are a threat to the ABs.
12 May 2012, 12:28 pm
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-93: I hear you. I don’t think anyone would really care if these fakes supported, say, the Force or the Highlanders.
Can you imagine if about 15% of Wellington started “supporting” the Bulls? Wearing their jerseys, getting drunk at match day and booing the home kicker, flinging rude insults to the other home team fans and just generally trying to be as intentionally obnoxious as possible? It would drive you mad.
12 May 2012, 12:29 pm
@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-90: Lol. I am not suprised.
If the day ever comes that the Crusaders are surpassed as the “best” team, the fakes will flock to the new “best” team in a heartbeat.
12 May 2012, 12:30 pm
*surprised*
12 May 2012, 12:34 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-94:
So it wouldnt bother you if Viewer supported the Blues or Highlanders?
12 May 2012, 12:47 pm
@Hurricane(Hurricane)-97: not as much no, I would still find it a little bit weird for a Saffa to be supporting a NZ team (the enemy) but I would be more easily convinced that there was a genuine reason for the support, like family in the area, etc.
Fakes don’t support losing teams, that’s the basic principle and that’s why every fake and his/her dog supports the Crusaders.
12 May 2012, 12:49 pm
Cheers Hurri, got to go out. Catch up later.
12 May 2012, 12:52 pm
@wooden spoon(wooden spoon)-99:
Yeah Wooden, enjoy the rest of the day, catch ya mate
