Affies picked up their first victory over Grey Bloem in six years on Saturday.

In a rivalry that stretches back to 1953, Grey Bloem have dominated this fixture – winning 26 of the 34 previous clashes. However, Affies delivered an impressive performance to pick up their fourth victory over the boys from Bloemfontein.

Affies recorded a 35-29 victory in Pretoria. The hosts led 20-10 at the break as they scored two tries to one.

Affies on the charge

Grey Bloem hit back twice in the second stanza as they trailed 20-17 and 23-22 after the break, but Affies had a strong finish to the match as they scored two more tries to earn the six-point win.

This was Grey Bloem’s second loss of the season.

In the other major schoolboy clashes over the weekend, Paarl Gym eased to a 28-8 win over Paul Roos while Kearsney shocked Glenwood with a 20-14 away win. Dale also edged Selborne 10-9 in the big Eastern Cape derby.

    They said this six years ago and six years from now they are going to say it again as if affies is better than a full strength Grey.

    The Affies team were quite impressive. Didn’t watch the whole game but the forwards in particular, the No. 5 and the front row played some great rugby!
