MARK KEOHANE, in Business Day Newspaper, writes the Boks gained more the battle in Nelspruit. Rather a scrap than a sensational effort against a courageous but limited Scotland. The Springbok coaching staff gained more because of the struggle against Scotland and there certainly won’t be complacency against Samoa. South African rugby supporters tend to be reactionary and very different in their reactions every weekend. When New Zealand struggled to beat France in the first Test in Auckland and South Africa were brilliant in patches against Italy many on social networks expressed confidence ... The Bulls are South Africa's best team and they proved it in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs have been outstanding all season and they were as good on Saturday night as they have been at any stage. Still it wasn't good enough to beat the Bulls, who won 30-25 after leading 30-13 with 10 minutes to play. The Cheetahs finished brilliantly and deserved the bonus point, but the Bulls consolidated their top two league placing thanks to an imposing first hour. Pierre Spies was impressive as team and pack leader, Arno Botha was ever present and the No 9, 10, 12 Bulls axis of Francois Hougaard, Morne ... Read Article11 Jun 2013
Brendan Venter's appointment as Sharks Director of Rugby is a good one. But the decision to end John Plumtree's Sharks coaching tenure is not. Former Springbok and Italy coach Nick Mallett turned down an invitation for the role of Sharks Director of Rugby and Venter, formerly the head coach and Director of Rugby at Saracens, will start his job at the outset of the Currie Cup season. Plumtree remains the Super Rugby head coach until the end of this season's tournament but his contract has not been renewed. Plumtree is highly rated in Europe and will in all likelihood link up with a European ... Read Article8 Jun 2013
Rene Ranger was among the few highlights in New Zealand's 23-13 win against France in Auckland. The All Blacks led 17-10 at half time but France dominated field position for most of the match and enjoyed the greater quality in possession. However they couldn't translate the advantage in the set phase and at the breakdown into points. New Zealand defended well in a match of poor quality. France lead early through Wesley Fofana's try and it took Ben Smith's break to start up New Zealand's international season. Smith has been the form New Zealand back in Super Rugby and he looked a class ... Read Article27 May 2013
Kiwi Vern Cotter is Scotland's new head coach. Cotter will only take up the position in a year's time. He will see out his contact with French club Clermont. Cotter's appointment means that New Zealanders will coach Scotland, Ireland (Joe Schmidt) and Wales (Warren Gatland). New Zealander Robbie Deans has been at the helm of Australia for the last five years and current Blues coach John Kirwan coached Italy and Japan. Kiwi coaches have also been at the helm of Samoa and Fiji in recent years. Read Article5 Mar 2013
MARK KEOHANE writes the Varsity Cup in its first year rocked. Since then it's just another professional tournament. The Varsity Cup may have the innovation of doing a few things differently, but what was supposed to be a celebration of student rugby somehow just seems like another tournament, in which the traditional power houses remain the traditional strengths in the tournament. Much has been made of the Port Elizabeth-based Nelson Mandela University display this season and equally there has been bewilderment at how poor Shimlas have been. But it seems the old one two of Stellenbosch University ... Read Article12 May 2013
Marcus Watson scored in extra time to beat the Blitzbokke in the London World Series Sevens Cup quarter-finals. The teams were level 14-all at full time. Watson's try came four minutes into extra time. England won 19-14. England had the chance to win the match with the last play of the game in normal time. They were awarded a penalty and opted to take a drop kick for goal. It missed. Watson then rounded off a move after England had retained possession for two minutes. South Africa suffered further embarrassment when they lost for a second time in the tournament to the USA and were eliminated ... Read Article8 Jan 2013
Limpopo will play in the Vodacom Cup as a separate side for the first time this year. The region, which is a sub-union of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, has been granted a place in the tournament in its own rights to help foster rugby in South Africa’s far north. They join the 14 provincial unions as well as the returning Pampas XV from Argentina in the tournament, which kicks off in the second week of March and concludes in mid-May. The Polokwane-based Limpopo team will play in the North Section of the competition, along with the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions, Griffons, Leopards, Pumas, Valke ... Read Article16 May 2012

@Transformation(Transformation)-117: We are not disagreeing on either points. I watched the game live and it was great to see SBW and Richard K play the way they do,
I’m pretty sure that we are too restrictive and possibly another pair fo eyes will remedy this.
If not, I’m still very pleased with how the season has gone so far, results-wise.
16 May 2012, 12:36 pm
Well its also misogynyst’s day on keo, it seems

The best thing that could happen for SA is three SA sides in the top 6. Imagine that, 50% of the the top 6 consists of SA teams, good season for SA. and it just increases the chances of an SA side actually winning this comp. Hopefully the Sharks!!

@Sharkie10(Sharkie10)-154:
Absolutely, so why are some wishing doom and gloom on other teams…
16 May 2012, 12:46 pm
Of course I want the Stormers to win the whole damn thing, but if not then hopefully one of our other teams will win…
16 May 2012, 12:52 pm
@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-155: Not too sure hey…I think SA fans are a bit more competitive against one another than Aus and NZ fans. I think. Who knows

@Sharkie10(Sharkie10)-157:
I would be the first to hug a tree if the Sharks win and will show tact if the Bulls do. The thing is the trophy must come here… We are all SAFFA’s after all…

@John Galt(John Galt)-148:
what backline….grant is the epitomy of the “okay” flyhalf. Devilliers and dejong can’t or don’t pass. Joe Pieterson offers nothing on attack withregards to adding the extra man to the line.
….in my opinion, this is all the evidence you really need to rate the stormers backs considering how dominant the forwards have been and the amount of ball they have provided.
16 May 2012, 13:07 pm
It’s one thing blaming the coach but you need to look at the players as well.
everyone critis m.steyn for the lack of attacking options when he is with the boks albeit his franchise has no problem scoring points but the one common denominator in this equation is devilliers,dejong,(jaque fourie last year),habana. You could even chuck in Aplons name here,albeit, he needs to be given more ball in the correct situation and probably best from the bench in my opinion.
….is it becoming clearer yet?
16 May 2012, 13:08 pm
@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-159:
Man for man, its a far more attacking backline than the Bulls have. And yet the Bulls dont battle to score tries.
16 May 2012, 13:11 pm
@John Galt(John Galt)-161:
there is no evidence whatsoever to believe man for man the stormers have a more attacking backline.
that is perception and nothing more.
basically, flecks pretty average, but so are some of the backs he is working with.

First time I actually liked the dam keo TV. Must be becos there was no sideshows this time. Actually listened and enjoyed it.
Agree , the stormers def need some help with our attacking play. I wanted to scream everytime Devunhage kicked the dam ball !!! Its like having your wisdom teeth extracted without the antithetic !!
Just one thing Vrede , jassis nowadays you look like someone that hails from Bishop’s Court and not Bishop Lavis brujie. You using that whitening cream ?
16 May 2012, 13:34 pm
@Dawn(Dawn)-100: At another Award ceremony.
16 May 2012, 13:54 pm
@sparticus(sparticus)-164: Hahahaha well said Spartie! I fell exactly the same!
Surely if the first 2/3/4 kicks DONT work you try something else? Or try and vary your play to surprise the opposition??!!!
Its ironic how the Stormers play like the Bulls now, and the Bulls are much more like WP/Stormers of old. Although a difference is the Bulls are also WINNING the games, not “losing beautifully” like WP used to…
16 May 2012, 14:53 pm
huh..is Vrede vani Lavis?
16 May 2012, 14:55 pm
maybe i’m barking up the wrong tree, but isn’t dewald duvenage a big problem in the stormers backline. the oke never attempts a snipe around the ruck or scrum, so the opposition defenders can spread a bit further out and not worry about him. just a thought.
16 May 2012, 15:20 pm
@bokfan1(bokfan1)-166: The diffs is when the bulls kick they kick intelligently , they have more than a 50% chance of getting the ball back , its offensive defense. Same for when the boks did it right , Stormers do it so that the other team can have a run and we do what we do best – defend.
Sooner or later the guys will either drop dead or lose form. Simply logic tells you that if you make 3 times the amount of tackles then the chances are 300% more that you will get injured.
The Stormers problem is NOT a coaching problem so much as it is a halfback problem. Grant for all his consistencies in not really the answer at flyhalf , he needs to be the general in play not just the fearless one in running and tackling.
Imagine Napoleon had to be a great fighter and fought from the front but with no strategy ? Flyhalf should be the Napoleon of the team. Stormers play from the inside centre ie second five eighth , nothing major if your inside centre is Carter but De Villiers in not a Napoleon either ! I dont mind the kicking but geez not every single ball !!
16 May 2012, 15:35 pm
@John Galt(John Galt)-161:
this can be easily settled by say having the bok team play a warmup match against the bulls team..?…
sure there’ll be a few bulls players to give or take in one or the other direction but still seams like a potentially instructive and informative exercise.
16 May 2012, 16:47 pm
Vrede almost gets it right for the first time,pity you can see his eyes moving while he is reading the idiot boards.
What he is basically trying to say in his naive way is that this is a team who are desperately focused on not losing,not one focused on winning.
This strategy does work for awhile,it has worked for Chelsea against Barcelona,and almost worked for QPR against Man City.
Trouble is in a brutal season like super15 you can’t sustain it,and your luck will eventually run out.
But by then your mindset is too rigid and your fear of losing is so big that you can’t change the game plan
16 May 2012, 18:02 pm
The back line are not getting opportunities to shine – simple as that – when the Stormers set up a ruck that idiot Duwenhage waits until all his forwards are behind the ball before he sets off with the forwards again.
The stand off is being over utilised as well. There is always a forward waiting to receive the ball in channel one. Brok Harris is a serial offender.
So either Duwenhage kicks the ball or he allows the forwards to take it up. The forwards have been excellent but the backs aint impotent – they’re just not getting enough ball.
16 May 2012, 18:17 pm
So far so good, it works
So why fixing it?
I know they defy logic: loose forwards going down like flies, a scrumhalf who is as slow as that fattie Januarie, back line that doesn’t pass/doesn’t know how to pass and a fly half who does all the right things but SLOWLY
They keep winning though, keep it that way
16 May 2012, 19:00 pm
@Hondo(Hondo)-173: So Hondo, tell us how useless Beast is?? i mean a weak Sharks scrum suddenly performs with him back, damn bad when a prop is so weak huh, he shouldnt be allowed to make their scrum stronger huh???
16 May 2012, 20:48 pm
@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-15:
yeah and if you hit a home run then you get an extra innings.. plus if you serve a couple aces in a row you get a kiss from the ball girl or shoot a hole in one then you win a Maserati
I absolutely agree why they wanna complicate this game further than its complicated already…
if you score 5 tries and let 5 tries in then why not get your bonus point deducted?
Rather score one try and keep the opposition try less thats a far more deserving win than a lucky packet flurry of Russian roulette rugby where you score 2 tries and the opposition scores 5 but the ref sees fit to award you another 21 points by way of freebie gimme points for free.
16 May 2012, 21:55 pm
The main problem, I see, is this infatuation of giving 4 points for a win. Another point for scoring 4 tries. And you also get a point if you lose within 7. Big deal.
The whole point of playing sport is to win more games than you lose. Last time, I checked, that’s exactly what the Stormers are doing.
The 6 Nations haven’t adjusted their points scoring system in years. And don’t tell me that you don’t get exciting finishes to games or the table itself.
Reward success. However it comes.
16 May 2012, 22:11 pm
@Bill Reyts(Gumboots)-158:
I only read some posts later. You and I are on the same page then.
16 May 2012, 22:29 pm
I don’t know what the big fuss is…..Stormers are the most consistent team in the comp in my opinion….I enjoy watching them because what they do out on the field, they do it well ,as compared to my own team.
A bit off the topic….heard IRB are to introduce a revenue sharing or compensation model ….what ever you want to call it…at the next World Cup. Sanzar members to receive 5 million($nz) each and a further 20 million($nz) to be split between SA, NZ,OZ and Argentina.
16 May 2012, 22:47 pm
@Te Rangatira(Te Rangatira)-178:
One area the Stormers can improve is their distribution to the outsides, since they are looking to bolster their squad, may want to pick up a ball playing centre.
17 May 2012, 07:29 am
@the peanut gallery(peanut)-168: Exactely.
17 May 2012, 07:30 am
@Te Rangatira(Te Rangatira)-179:
Good point – I notice that defect too.
They will choke come finals – justy my gut feeling.
Brumbies with two more good wins are really suprise packet and moving up in the shadows quietly. Dqark horse
17 May 2012, 07:36 am
@sparticus(sparticus)-169: I humbly dis agree. The problem in the Stormer’s team is their no.9. For a long time now my feeling is to have him at 10 and get a new 9. IMO.A host of very good 9′s playing overseas at the moment. If you want to “buy” someone, buy Ruan Pienaar . I am not a Stormers supporter but would love to see them score some real “WP” tries!
17 May 2012, 07:48 am
@optiplay(optiplay)-182:
some real “WP” tries!???
They havent done so since days of Kobus Burger and Neil “thunderthighs” Burger were playing on the wings.

@greatest13gerber(greatest13gerber)-183: I am going further back to the Carel days.
17 May 2012, 07:58 am
@greatest13gerber(greatest13gerber)-183: Truth is:They have 5 Springboks in the backline and very few planned tries. I am hoping that the problem is with the coaching staff. If not,and these get chosen for the Springboks we are in trouble.
17 May 2012, 08:03 am
this is a snapshot in time of various stormers article headliens on keo from old to new hehe:
Stormers aim for sharper showing (not too bad)
Powerful Stormers preparing to peak (sounds ominous)
Undefeated Stormers march on (sounds like an ss unit circa 1942)
Stormers stem Red tide (the power of the mighty sea)
Stormers end tour on high (job well done… onwards..)
Stormers set high standard for Bulls (aallllllllrighty then… lessons to learn here boys)
Coetzee: Four points the focus (hey..?. why no chest beating goose march, march?)
Stormers have X factor, Sharks don’t (petulanty wind arsed strike back..?)
STORMERS FACE SCRAP FOR SURVIVAL..!!! (to this.? wtf? hey? how so? hehe)
17 May 2012, 10:08 am
@greatest13gerber(greatest13gerber)-181:
The art of passing the ball both ways a necessary skill at this level. Come finals time Stormers will have to up the ante on attack otherwise your gut gut feeling is not a case of flatulence. As for Brumbies….they will go down this weekend and without Christian Leaifano will struggle to make impression in playoffs….and that aint my gut talking
17 May 2012, 14:00 pm
@Te Rangatira(Te Rangatira)-187:
Leaifano massive lost
gut feeling – these stormers will choke
