Tahs reshuffle for Cape clash

The Waratahs have made a string of changes for their clash with the Stormers at Newlands on Saturday.

Brendan McKibbin and Bernard Foley start at scrumhalf and fullback respectively, while Adam Ashley-Cooper shifts to inside centre.

In the forwards, Dave Dennis starts at No 8 in place of Wycliff Palu, who plays off the wood. Sitaleki Timani and Dean Mumm pair up in the second row, with Kane Douglas dropping to the bench.

There is uncertainty about the fitness of hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau following his concussion a fortnight ago. He will be monitored this week to determine his readiness for the match.

    In all honestly, I think the Stormers will smoke the Tahs.

    Two points for the Stormers to consider if they want to score more tries:
    1. Switch the midfield runners on offense to ensure quicker ruck ball on the 2nd phase
    2. Work on their alignment on the turnover ball.

    The second point in particular is a tough change to make. The Stormers are almost too obsessed with securing the ball that they overcommit to the tackle point, with obvious implications for numbers out wide.

    But they are also very slow to react to or realign their strike runners and support players on turnover situations. After a Stormers turnover and the subsequent contact point, they should bring Habana , De Jongh and Aplon (if they are free) to the closer channels on this second turnover phase.

    Youtube De Jongh’s try against Wales (on debut) to see how potent he can be in the closer channels with a defensive line that is slightly misaligned. I also don’t need to remind you about his try against the Waratahs (yes, THAT try) against a more structured defensive line from a regular offensive play.

    @willievz(willievz)-58: I agree Willie, he has good running lines, his distribution isn’t great, but neither is Jean’s and that is the problem.

    @willievz(willievz)-58:

    very good points willie…

    i find that point 2 gets worse later in the match… which allows teams back into the game…

    i do agree with you about the centers…. but how are we gonna get the message to AC…?

    maybe they should mix it up or alternate offense/defense…

    thing is though… we haven’t fired on all cylinders for 80 minutes yet the whole season… and when we do….?

    i think we will this weekend…

    @stormersboy(stormersboy)-59: It all depends on the gameplan.

    And also, there is a difference between distribution and passing.

    Distribution is far more than about passing, it is about making the right decision and being accurate in your execution.

    But anyways, if your 12 is going to be the player who more often than not collides with the defensive line on first phase (which is certainly the case with the Stormers), then it is more important that he ensures a quick ruck ball for his side on the second phase rather than be a passing genius. JDJ is more effective in this regard as he can step off both feet and attack the weaker shoulder of the inside defender every time.

    Nonu is a superb example of a 12 not reknowned for his passing skills but his distribution and accuracy of decisionmaking is top dollar.

    On another point – I would also like to see Grant skip the 12 more often a-la Dan Carter to Conrad Smith, and send the oval package to the 13. The 13 then has both the 12 and 11/14 on his shoulders for passing options.

    @willievz(willievz)-61:

    yeah… the skip would be a good variation…

    @willievz(willievz)-61: From your lips to AC’s ears.

    Seriously though, you make very good points.

    The Waratah’s match 22 now look more like a PIs’ Job Creation Centre in Sydney, easy prey for the Stormers
    Add Craig (His Maters Voice) Joubert to the mix, what would you get?
