Edinburgh recruit another Cheetah
22 May 2012
Izak van der Westhuizen has signed with Edinburgh and will join Cheetahs team-mate WP Nel there at the end of the season.
The 26-year-old Cheetahs lock has signed a two-year deal with the Scottish club and will move north once his commitments in South Africa conclude at the end of October.
‘I want to test myself against the top players in Europe so when I found out Edinburgh were looking for a player with my skill-set, I was desperate to sign,’ he said.
‘I’m really looking forward to joining the club. They’ve some real talent joining the squad and some quality Scottish players re-signed too so I think it’s the ideal time to be part of a really exciting squad.’
The Cheetahs are set to lose a number of forwards at the end of the current season. Apart from Van der Westhuizen and Nel, loose forward Ashley Johnson has signed with Wasps and lock George Earle will be linking up with Welsh club Scarlets.

Tough break Dragons.
Cheetahs are losing a lot of Key forwards. I hope they have decent replacements. I dont want to see them getting relegated next season….

With Cheetahs and Lions merging for next year these player moves to the UK will have little impact on the combined franchise.

We used to leaving players. Izak is 26 and has not made any great strides. He is average at best. Cheetahs will replace him with a youngster as we always do. Don’t try fool us though… Izak is leaving because they will offer him more money. He is just not good enough for us to consider offering a new contract with a big pay rise.

Reckon Cheetahs should loan players that they reckon are good enough and then they can return to Lions for CC. Just don’t merge…

So I guess the Toyota deal hasn’t succeeded in retaining the Cheetahs squad then.
Cheetahs have a lock crisis brewing.
