IRB throws spanner in Bok works
24 May 2012
Victor Matfield will not come out of retirement to play in the Test series against England.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer was hoping to utilise the lineout legend in the three-match series in June as he only has a week to prepare the team. Matfield retired from rugby after the 2011 World Cup, although he did make one last appearance for the Barbarians in late November.
However, an IRB rule, stating that a retired player announcing his return to the game may not play international rugby for six months after announcing his comeback, has prevented Matfield from adding one last chapter to a glittering career and breaking John Smit’s Bok record of 111 Test caps (Matfield has 110).
Meyer is now likely to give Andries Bekker the No 5 jersey.

@Transformation(Transformation)-45: Rocky Balboa !

@Transformation(Transformation)-20: Who said Meyer wasn’t aware of the rule.
I’m fairly certain he previously mentioned that the rule could scupper Matfield’s plans to come out of retirement.
Is this just another attempt of yours to find incompetence in the current regime?

Ha ! The whinging Yappies even manage to phcuk up their phcuk-ups !
and then they’ll blame it in someone else, again.

a fit bekker is a good idea, but he’s not fit, and Kruger has been consistently better in that role than he has this season. i’d like to see Kruger/Etsebeth pair up.
and by pair up i mean play in the same team. they are kinda the thinking man’s modern Matfield/Bakkies equivalent.

@WPStormer Shadow(WPStormer Shadow)-16:
Oh come on you conspiracy theorist.
It’s a rule for everyone. It may be dumb but its a rule.
I believe it was introduced to prevent drugs cheats from gaming the system. The other benefit is it forces players to get match fit before returning to top level.
We are short of locks though. WOuld not have thought that a year ago

it’s the lobotomies, theyve deduced.
entirely understandable, in the circumstances.

“However, an IRB rule, stating that a retired player announcing his return to the game may not play international rugby for six months after announcing his comeback, has prevented (etc.etc.)”
So nobody told Meyer that Vic should have returned five months ago to be even considered?
24 May 2012, 12:09 pm
finally an end to this none story

@RedMan(RedMan)-53: “fairly certain” means nothing…
“find incompetence” hahahaha
i think you’re losing your marbles on this one…keep your panties on!
24 May 2012, 12:13 pm
Dudes… Meyer never said he WILL use Victor. They said they’re exploring the option. Which probably means they send a request to the IRB, which probably failed. That’s also probably why they didn’t make a big issue about it. The media did.
I don’t like Meyer, but come on!
24 May 2012, 12:18 pm
Oh Thank goodness no Victor. IRB to the rescue.

@rossoneri(rossoneri)-64: more reason for heineken to pick Plod!
Smit to skipper Barbarians
TEAMtalk Media | 24 May, 2012 11:330 Comments
Former Springbok captain and hooker John Smit will skipper the Barbarians in their fixture against England at Twickenham Stadium on Sunday.
Smit has been named in a front-row alongside props John Afoa and Neemia Tialata while Mark Chisholm, Anton van Zyl, Ernst Joubert, Johnnie Beattie and Akapusi Qera make up the eight.
“We have several natural leaders in the squad but with John’s track record of captaincy at the highest levels of the game he was the obvious choice to lead us on this tour,” said coach John Kirwan.
even a kiwi like JK (ufo
) recognizes Plod’s leadership, this would be a boon for heineken going into the Test series with the same players Plod has been munching all season long!
no brainer!

Man………………. the IRB have some petty rules.
Who thought this one up,
and why?
24 May 2012, 13:44 pm
cane someone posted earlier it stops any player to retire,do steriods,have enough time to get it out of his system and then make himself available again.
as far as i know injured players in rehab are tested a lot to prevent this kind of thing aswell.

cane
how petty was the irb rule during the rwc regarding the haka that cost wales a fine because they dared to march up to the keewees?

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-69:
90% of NZers surveyed on the issue, agree with you fernly.
24 May 2012, 14:05 pm
seems like the irb did not consult anyone and the all blacks were projected in a bad light.
24 May 2012, 14:21 pm
This is excellent news.

@Fern is not a stud,he is merely no19(Fern)-69: never thought i’d say it but the last wc kinda put me off Haka’s for a while.
24 May 2012, 14:44 pm
roobarb i think the flashmob haka’s propably did it for you.
24 May 2012, 15:02 pm
could be.
24 May 2012, 15:03 pm
never saw footage of them but the haka has become watered down and commercial due to overuse in my opinion.
24 May 2012, 18:28 pm
Really glad the IRB pulled that rat out of the hat even though I’m not convinved Meyer would have started Vic. I still think a player like Bakkies might have a role in the Boks, what is he 32 ? He brings incredible grunt that intimidates and has been a key part of Bok successes over the years.
24 May 2012, 21:39 pm
@RedMan(RedMan)-53: Ahh man, dont waste your time with transensitive. He is the bantu version of Hondo.

The anonymous author of this piece is being mischievous and feeding all the conspiracy theory *******. How can the IRB have thrown a spanner in the works? The only organisations throwing “a spanner in the works” must be SARU and the coaching team if in their ignorance of standing IRB rules they go and make public statements about bringing Victor back out of retirement when standing IRB rules prohibit this.
25 May 2012, 00:49 am
Wow monkeees is a prohibited word. Amazing I can’t use that word here but others get away with far more insulting stuff! Good work Keoites at least you are trying to clear up the abusive stuff that sometimes damages this blog. BTW I apologise to all offended monkeees.
