The anonymous author of this piece is being mischievous and feeding all the conspiracy theory *******. How can the IRB have thrown a spanner in the works? The only organisations throwing “a spanner in the works” must be SARU and the coaching team if in their ignorance of standing IRB rules they go and make public statements about bringing Victor back out of retirement when standing IRB rules prohibit this.

Really glad the IRB pulled that rat out of the hat even though I’m not convinved Meyer would have started Vic. I still think a player like Bakkies might have a role in the Boks, what is he 32 ? He brings incredible grunt that intimidates and has been a key part of Bok successes over the years.

cane someone posted earlier it stops any player to retire,do steriods,have enough time to get it out of his system and then make himself available again.
as far as i know injured players in rehab are tested a lot to prevent this kind of thing aswell.

Former Springbok captain and hooker John Smit will skipper the Barbarians in their fixture against England at Twickenham Stadium on Sunday.

Smit has been named in a front-row alongside props John Afoa and Neemia Tialata while Mark Chisholm, Anton van Zyl, Ernst Joubert, Johnnie Beattie and Akapusi Qera make up the eight.

“We have several natural leaders in the squad but with John’s track record of captaincy at the highest levels of the game he was the obvious choice to lead us on this tour,” said coach John Kirwan.

Dudes… Meyer never said he WILL use Victor. They said they’re exploring the option. Which probably means they send a request to the IRB, which probably failed. That’s also probably why they didn’t make a big issue about it. The media did.

I don’t like Meyer, but come on!
