Former Springbok captain John Smit will lead the Barbarians when they play England this Sunday.

Barbarians coach John Kirwan said Smit beat a number of strong candidates to the captaincy.

‘We have several natural leaders in the squad but with John’s track record of captaincy at the highest levels of the game he was the obvious choice to lead us on this tour,’ Kirwan said.

Three South Africans in all have been named in the starting team, with Saracens loose forward Ernst Joubert and Stade Francais lock Anton van Zyl joining Smit in the pack.
