Stonehouse to coach local Baa-Baas

Pumas mentor Jimmy Stonehouse has been appointed coach of the SA Barbarians teams that will take on England in two matches next month.

Stonehouse will be assisted by Eddie Myners (South Western Districts) and Oersond Gorgonzola (Griffons) in preparing SA Barbarians selections chosen from players representing either the northern or southern Currie Cup First Division teams.

The southern selection will play England in Kimberley on 13 June before the northern selection meets the tourists in Potchefstroom on 19 June.

The squads for the matches will be confirmed early next week. The players were selected by Saru national selectors Peter Jooste and Ian McIntosh together with the Barbarians’ representatives, Hugh Bladen and Wynand Claassen.

According to a statement from Saru, the matches represent the revival of the Barbarians team in South Africa.

‘The club has struggled in recent years to get fixtures, largely due to the increasing calls on players’ time,’ said Saru CEO Jurie Roux. ‘This is one way we have identified to revive the club and to enable it to re-establish its position as a contributor to rugby in South Africa.’

I think it is good for our game to give the “lower league” players a chance to shine on the bigger stage

Any predictions considering both the Northern & Southern Squads?
Guys who have been left out of Meyers group will have an opportunity ti prove themselves

I.e Whitehead,Kolisi,Minnie(I think this guy is very
good),le Roux(not only scores brilliant tries but
also one of the main game breakers which the
Bokke need as they are not scoring tries against
    the best),Ebersohn(Robert of course..).

Yep, Oershond Gorgonzola must be a fugitive in a witness protection programme. Something stinks about a name like that.

Be Great to see the SA Barbarians back in action and great to see Division 1 players get an opportunity – once in lifetime for some indeed- to shine.
