Steyn back in the Tank
28 May 2012
Frans Steyn has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks.
The Springbok back left the Sharks in 2009 to join Racing Metro on a two-and-a-half year deal and won 61 caps for the French club. Steyn recently expressed his desire to return to South Africa and the Sharks were always likely to get his signature.
Steyn will officially join the union on 1 July, but an IRB ruling stipulating that any player registered after 1 April is ineligible for the play-offs means that Steyn would watch from the stands should the Sharks progress to that stage of the tournament.
‘It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him,’ said Sharks coach John Plumtree. ‘He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with the Sharks.’
Steyn has played 47 Tests for the Springboks and is expected to wear the No 12 jersey in the three-Test series against England in June.

Saturdays win by the Sharks over the Stormers will go down in Sharks Rugby Folklore…
Players will haul out dusty of winners medals to show their grandkids…
It will be placed on the curriculum of all provincial schools…
Tapestries depicting the epic battle will be hand-sewn and hung from church vestibules from Berg to Beach…
Champion bulls at future Royal Shows will be named after players like Beast the Brahman, Long-Haired Lambie the Shetland Bull…
A 150m high memorial to the brave players will be built at Shaka World, to which all Natalians… by law… will do a pilgrimage and have their photographs taken.
Shops fortunate enough to ever serve one of the honourable players will be privileged to bear the Royal Sharks seal on their façade to alert good citizens to the fact that “Beast bought his Bics here!”
Distance markers between towns will no longer use kilometers… they will be replaced by Steynometers referring to how many Frans DropGoals travellers still have to go…
Johnny Clegg will reform Savuka and a musical about it… to run in perpetuity at the Playhouse…
Ticket stubs from the game will be auctioned for more than Van Gogh paintings…
Like Woodstock, every worthy Sharks supporter will claim to have been at the game… making it the most well attended rugby match in history…
People will forego calling each other by name… they will proudly proffer their seat numbers on introduction… “Hi I’m RowRR263… and you are…?”
The first question asked of eachother in Durban social and business circles when meeting someone for the first time… (and second time… and… heck okay… every time…) will be
“Where were you on 26/5?”
Such is the importance in the Last Outpost of colonial rule attached to beating the Stormers for the first time in four attempts.
So please fellow Stormers fans… show a little kindness and try a little tenderness… much like South Africa wining the world cup in 95… this really is a historic occasion for the Sharks fans.

@ufo(ufo)-351: Sharks did show that you can’t just buy players and offer a non functional beach.
Plumtree is the best coach/manager in the SA franchises and now with Steyn back you should be very scared of this young side.

@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-352: Indeed, his Superugby success attests to this of course.

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food(The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food)-353: Why do you mention the Sharks in your name? Obsessed much.
I would classify the Sharks as the Arsenal of the Super 15.
Always up there and playing the sport beautifully.

@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-354: Why do you have ‘moron’ in yours? Self explanatory I guess? Dude, stating that Plumtree is the best coach/manager in the SA conference is absolute Sharks driven PR. Give me one actual fact/result to back this up since his tenure started. (You do realise many Sharkette fans want the man gone gone gone?)

@The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food(The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food)-355: Why cant you have a Stormers positive based name?
Yes, i realise that some Sharks want him gone but he is doing very well with an extremely limited budget compared with Stormers…

@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-352:

so suddenly plum tree is the best coach in south africa… okay… should get him a knighthood…

young side…? stormers average age is 23… pray tell what is the sharks…?
don’t be such an oxy…!
29 May 2012, 13:28 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-356: You’ve just bought Frans Steyn (yes, granted SARU assisted) so talk of limited budgets and the Sharks is honestly not valid. (Spare a thought for the Cheetahs when you talk budgets…..)

@ufo(ufo)-359: Why don’t you have a Stormers based name…
29 May 2012, 14:35 pm
@ufo(ufo)-359: Yes, i do feel bad for Cheetahs but :
I wouldnt classify any of those guys as big name spends like : Habana and Fourie(yes, i realise he is gone now)
J Du Plessis (wanted to play with his brother)
Freddy (wanted to develop his game)
Ludick (wanted to NOT play for the Lions)
The rest were all young up and coming starts who the Sharks have developed and are developing into Spirngboks… you are welcome.

29 May 2012, 16:13 pm
@Oxy moron(cjgrove)-361: Dude, you dont have to defend this to the Stormers fans. Holy moly – should we list the players the Stormers have bought in the last few years ?
29 May 2012, 17:47 pm
@Dusky(Dusky)-363: Thanks , don’t know what I was thinking. @ufo @The Sharks rugby pedigree is packaged as dog food You guys should be more positive and look at your own team first. The Sharks may not have won the Super Rugby trophy but we play some damn exciting rugby and we have come with a split second of winning it.
How many trophy’s have WP or Stormers won since 1990?
