Steyn back in the Tank

Steyn back in the Tank

Frans Steyn has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks.

The Springbok back left the Sharks in 2009 to join Racing Metro on a two-and-a-half year deal and won 61 caps for the French club. Steyn recently expressed his desire to return to South Africa and the Sharks were always likely to get his signature.

Steyn will officially join the union on 1 July, but an IRB ruling stipulating that any player registered after 1 April is ineligible for the play-offs means that Steyn would watch from the stands should the Sharks progress to that stage of the tournament.

‘It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him,’ said Sharks coach John Plumtree. ‘He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with the Sharks.’

Steyn has played 47 Tests for the Springboks and is expected to wear the No 12 jersey in the three-Test series against England in June.

I could now say with confidence that Sharks now have the best centres in our conference.

Jordaan, Fransie, Tim, and Bosman. Bosman has improved huge this year, he is playing so much better than last year.

Can’t wait to see Fransie team up with Jordaan or even Tim.

Oh yesssssssssssssss! Thank the Lord almighty that this overweight, overrated behemoth has signed for the Guppies, where he can die a quick and natural death. Watching him bumble his way through the Top 14 in France is nothing short of embarrassing, especially in light of his god like status on this site.

Great signing for the Stormers too as Whitehead will not be a happy chappy and most likely be very keen to move back to CT instead of gathering splinters on KP bench.

@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-18: Steyn might not have been incredible for Racing Metro but he’s a pretty damn good player for the Boks and has been a part of all our finest moments over the last 5 years. He was arguably the form 12 at the RWC before being injured and his injury hurt us more than his critics would like to admit. Steyn is far, far better than ANY of our other centres now than Fourie is inactive.

The Sharks seem to be the favourite last outpost for overweight rugby players.

Ollie le Roux, John Smit, France Steyn……….

And don’t forget they also fought hard for the signature of Ricky January who then unfortunately decided to come to CT.

Even Australia are in an era of pretty mediocre centres, we dont have much coming through behind the pedigree and experience of De Villiers and Steyn, but Adam Ashley Cooper is looking increasingly poor in Super Rugby, Barnes too. There just isn’t the threat we’ve come to expect from Wallaby centres. They’re bound to start Mortlock lite McCabe and lord knows who at 13.
Conversely, the NZ Super Rugby teams and the All Blacks remain extremely strong at centre.

    Forget the overweight angle.

A kid from Grey college in the Vrystaat who gets too much too soon, has only really been understood and coached properly at international level by Mr Eddie Jones. On that particular occasion at the WC he was brilliant as he was in the right role for the team.

He now gets out of the stifling environment of Bloem and Shorks country, and lives in another culture with a different language and different rugby environment where basic skills are of the very highest level.

Instead of waiting to draw his pension in later years, he went over young. The effec of this experience will have a tremendous effect on his top 3 inches.

With a good SA conditioning regime under Meyer and Plumtree. Fransie is about to play the best rugby of his life. His rugby intelligence will show on the field, and we all know he has NEVER lacked BMT, something his Grey College and Natal pedigree has brought out in him from young.

This 3 YEAR contract is excellent news! we are in dire need of big strong centres at the moment, and Fransie is much more than that.

    Welcome back vetseun.

Personally, I’d like to see any combination of Brussouw, Daniel, Alberts, Coetzee and Vermeulen(if he recovers from injury soon) for the England bash. Stander could be thrown in there too. Not a bad young group to shape the future.

    Big strong defender
Crash ball center , drawing 2-3 defenders who can off load to a 13 or wing on inside once half gap is created
2nd option for long deep kicks drawing the backline up first
Can stand back deep for the drop goal

I’m going to stick my grubby little finger in it and propose: Steyn has to be in the Bok starting XV. But……….at 15. I rate that’s his best spot. Not 12. Now why would I want to swim upstream when its easier to agree with you bojos. Fransie can kick a bit. Our man likes to run it from the back. He’s largish and difficult to stop. He’s an enthusiastic defender and has good vision and positional sense. What have I missed?

Yeah think the Bulls will be coming at your Stormers this weekend. We showed the pack how to break your defence…….haha. Bulls will be looking at that game over and over. Think Bulls will be too strong this weekend Tassies. Bulls will win not by much but they will win. I could be wrong, that is what I am thinking will happen.

Aint Paul Jordaan the luckiest player in SA rugby and Whitehead the unluckiest for now to respectively play outside, and to take a backseat and learn from the best 12 in World Rugby…

But never fear, more tries for the Sharks and Victory to us Kings Park Faithful once more as I misquote Bill Shakespeare slightly:

Once more unto the breach, dear Frans, once more,
Or close the wall up with our Kings Park dead!
In peace there’s nothing so becomes a man
    As modest stillness and humility,
But when the blast of Rugby blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger:
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
    Disguise fair nature with hard-favored rage;

Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height! On, on, you noble Shark,
Whose blood is fet from fathers of Rugby-proof

Be copy now to men of grosser blood
And teach them how to Play! And you, good yeomen,
Whose limbs were made in Kings Park, show us here
The mettle of your pasture. Let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not,

Follow your spirit; and upon this charge
Cry ‘God, Sharks Forever and Kings Park!’

Only Elstadt was a regular and he looked like he didn’t belong. The scrums were *****. Even the lineouts weren’t great. And we’ve covered the loose. Back had no chance. We were lucky to score two tries, against the run of play as I recall. Conversely, the Sharks brought their best game of the season to the party. At home noggal.

@CoachPete(CoachPete)-127: I know we did, but we lost all momentum once the bad pass by Fred led to Aplon’s try. That happens, suddenly we felt the pressure. It changes the game.

My feeling Bulls will win this weekend Coach. They will watch our game over and over.

I read something on sports24 by Ton Johnson. Tests interupt fascinating period. Go read there and see what he has to say. He says Sharks were superior to Stormers and the only reason Stormers came even close was because of the gifted tries. He complains about the ref missing the forward pass too. He is the kiwi that does that Reunion rugby show.

As much as the impotent Stormers fans pretend to be ‘good losers’ as least they try to behave with some dignity. Not a single Sharks fan has acted with anything even resembling grace or dignity since Saturday night. One has to wonder how valueless and empty of tangible accomplishment your lives are to demonstrate such ‘personal achievement’ in the accomplishment of 22 other men playing a game to which you have contributed exactly nothing. No one here needs to insult, embarrass or belittle you sorry sad sacks. You do that all by yourselves.

This HeavensGame fool is such a hypocrite. He disappears in a snarling, spitting rage of bad sportsmanship whenever the Sharks lose. Just like the rest of shallow Sharks fair-weather fans. Then have the temerity to question why Stormers fans don’t avail themselves to your sickening, childish mocking? Even though many of them in fact do?

This Kaksieok, Rangerman and Puma roundly condemn all Stormers fans on this thread as being upset that Frans Steyns has returned to Durban without having read through the thread to see the many that have posted right here it is a good thing. Then they pretend to be ‘friends’ with the self-same Stormers fans they have insultingly dismissed. Have you people no bounds of shame?

This BananaRiot fool says he doesn’t need HeavensGame to hold his hand because he is his own one-man Sharks army. Well, sonny boy, where the hell have you been when the Sharks were doing badly? You’ve pitched up just in time to grab all the glory like the archetypical fairweather Sharks fan.

You mock the Stormers fans but you Sharks fans are the most sycophantic (look it up) or should that be sicko-fantics there are in the world of sports?

  • 226.FckU2: Reply to this comment

The Sharks fans were saying before the game that the Stormers fans would be moaning about the ref. Yet every Sharks fan is going on and on about the ref – despite the fact that they won. Talk about sore losers. They berate any Stormer fan for even suggesting there are extenuating circumstances, yet they continue to make excuses for their win. Unbelievable!

Sharks are such dishonest supporters that they say their stadium is sold out but empty seats were clearly visible all over the place and the SSport broadcast that only 27 000 people attended the match. Many who were Stormers fans. When did they decrease the holding capacity of the stadium? Pathetic. And dishonest! We won’t even go to the semi-final against the Cheetahs a couple of years ago which had 20 000 empty seats.

These Stormers fans need to man-up and call a spade a fuckingshovel and tell these arrogant, adolescent, vicarious, fairweather Sharks fans exactly where to get off the bus.

How long before John Plumtree starts playing Frans Steyn all over the place? And stuffing up his career and headspace all over again. Plumtree thinks he is James Bond and Once is Not Enough. What are the odds on Steyn playing every position in the backline before the year is out?

How long before the Sharks players who have served well and got the team into the play-offs are dismissed by Plumtree as he shifts Steyn from pillar to post?

How long before the hypocritical Sharks fans start booing Frans Steyn again? Much like Nat voters, no Sharks fan even acknowledge that Frans Steyn was booed at KingsPark, let alone admits to doing the booing. How many missed drop goals in must-win matches will the pathetic Sharks fans gift Frans Steyn before they start booing him?

    Please everyone mark these words.

I’d love to hear the excuses once the fatboy runs and true to form disappoints. The Sharks will now go on to win the S15, like they did when Steyn was there a couple of years ago, like they dominated the CC for the last 20 odd years. They make it so easy!

Just scroll back a bit: “I knew Fransie was coming to the Sharks first” “No, I did” – Ok bruvva we both did – yayyyyyy Sharks. It’s all very wet, wimpish and flat to be honest. Old Puma for example reckons he would have Lambie as his 10 and 15 – like wow uber awesome yippy? When old men try and recapture their youth like this, it is sad – very sad (Colostomy bag sad……) I still want to know what their personalised number plates say…..”Rock star” “Big Boy” Big Daddy” “Sharks1″ etc. What I don’t get (much like you) is why the Stormer folk on here seem to suck it up? (Unless of course, they are just doing what most decent people would do; Humoring the aged?)

Was Wills there? Or maybe Harry? Surely the agricultural Princess Anne would have been there to run her hands over the champion bull?

The Sharks don’t have any of this to fall back on – which is why their fans always sound so desperate to impress. Who knows, in about 100 years the Sharks might get the ‘respect’ their fans think they deserve……just a pity the Hefner twins (Puma and Hor-moan) and their Playmates of the month (HG, You, and the library monitor Riotbananas) won’t be around to see it.

There are quite a few Sharks fans who have been loyal and true to the union since way back when…..the true fans (I saw a post from a guy like this here yesterday – can’t remember his name) Then you get the rest: the ones who supported other unions for decades, then suddenly ‘became’ Sharks/Natal fans because they were pushed into the Currie Cup and the marketing dept did a great PR job. Those jolly hockeystick jumpers, became fans of the Sharks BRAND, not the rugby behind the brand. The Sharks were the new boy band in town, and the tweenies (like you) went crackers….throwing your manties at the stage and slapping posters on your wall faster than one can shout,”Backstreet Boys”. All that has changed over the last decade, is the names of those you chaps hero worship….the great white hopes. Every player who arrives is the one to make the difference according to the gospel of you lot…….season in – season out, yet nothing changes……..and that is why the arrogance you display is so entertaining…..

Where have they all been this year, as the attendance at ACTUAL games has been woeful. As I said before, Sharks fans don’t love rugby – they love the kief braais and backslapping in the parking area.
    b) “The Sharks attract new fans daily…” – as I said, teenage girls supporting a BRAND, not a rugby team – don’t call them fans, they are consumers.
c)”Family environment” – well without pointing out anyone in particular, I would be loathe to take children to your ‘tank’, as some of the Sharks supporters ‘fetishes’ as read on here, would have me helluva worried…..
    d) You tell us about how hammered you were at the game, how you nearly got into a fight or 2, how you lost your friend, how you went to some pole-dancing hangout and paid some probably horrified chick to wave her T and A in your face – and then you proclaim you are a civilized man living in a civilized part of the country……

Dont forget, some tired Stormers will have no respite going straight into Intls and then straight back into Super rugby against a Lions team with much rest and all their players back, playing their probable last Super Rugby games as a Union and playing for pride… A banana peel if ever there was one, especially if you fools arrogantly write the opposition off like you normally tend to do…

A game against a rested Cheetahs wont be easy either at FS Stadium and I suspect that a little surprise awaits there. Stormers best bet is probably against the Rebs but lets not forget they beat the Crusaders and can play pretty decent rugby.

Sharks play a tired Lions team on Sat after a demoralising and then have a bye after the Intls which will help with any little niggles followed by two games at the Tank… Bulls would have just played the Cheetahs which I have no doubt will be physical to a fault followed by a long journey to Durbs which I reckon could turn out in effect to be the SA conference championship game… Sharks have a great chance there, at least as much a chance as beating the “awesome” Stormers last week…

Followed by a Cheetahs game at Kings Park too… Not easy but by then all to play for…

    Life truly is GOOD

After the break Sharks still need to play Bulls and Cheetahs. Those are both at home but not easy games at all. Bulls are class and Cheetahs are Sharks boogey team.

Stormers play Lions (H), Cheetahs (A) and Rebels (H).

I would say the Stormers have an easier route to the play-offs.

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-304: Don’t forget most of the tired Stormer forwards are not in the Bok reckoning……..and fortunately we get Schalk, Duane and Koster back. Added to that, most of the Stormer backs who ARE in the Bok mix – won’t be starting. So yeah – can’t see the Stormers being as tired and Sharks and Bulls. But then again, you chaps have Frans Steyn back for those games, so it shouldn’t matter how tired your front row or loose trio is…as Frans will beat the Bulls on his own – won’t he?

  • 314.Sasuke: Reply to this comment

@Heavens Game(Heavens Game)-304: Dude the Stormers will be focussed and know they need to win every game with a bonus point. I am sure Alister will instruct the guys to get the win then go hard for the bonus point.

Stormers will only lose 2 forwards to the Boks during June Etzebeth and Bekker and only 1 to the U/20 Kitshoff. So most of the pack will be well rested. Burger and Koster return for Lions game with Duane Vermeulen returning for Cheetahs game.

Sharks seems to me is losing more players to the Boks so your team will be more tired/might be injured come the 6 July.

All those teams the Stormers play have nothing to play for anymore so their motivation wont be that high. The Bulls will be playing for a play-off spot so you can expect them to go hard against the Sharkies come the 6th July.

Come to Kings Park and take in the atmosphere of the stadium…get that whiff of success in your lungs and feel the excitement of a Sharks win as the adrenaline sweeps you away. The Last Outpost Of The British Empire sucks in all visitors and before you know it you’re addicted and soon you will be wearing the black & white…as so many others before you and after. On Saturday at the pre game warm up ,I just happened to see Alistar and that grossly overweight Proudfoot standing next to that ridiculousnew Sharks mascot.
Yep all three cut from the same mould, the Sharks mascot probably being the healthiest looking.
No wonder the Stormers are tired and depleted even with two rest days.

Saturdays win by the Sharks over the Stormers will go down in Sharks Rugby Folklore…

Players will haul out dusty of winners medals to show their grandkids…

It will be placed on the curriculum of all provincial schools…

Tapestries depicting the epic battle will be hand-sewn and hung from church vestibules from Berg to Beach…

Champion bulls at future Royal Shows will be named after players like Beast the Brahman, Long-Haired Lambie the Shetland Bull…

A 150m high memorial to the brave players will be built at Shaka World, to which all Natalians… by law… will do a pilgrimage and have their photographs taken.

Shops fortunate enough to ever serve one of the honourable players will be privileged to bear the Royal Sharks seal on their façade to alert good citizens to the fact that “Beast bought his Bics here!”

Distance markers between towns will no longer use kilometers… they will be replaced by Steynometers referring to how many Frans DropGoals travellers still have to go…

Johnny Clegg will reform Savuka and a musical about it… to run in perpetuity at the Playhouse…

Ticket stubs from the game will be auctioned for more than Van Gogh paintings…

Like Woodstock, every worthy Sharks supporter will claim to have been at the game… making it the most well attended rugby match in history…

People will forego calling each other by name… they will proudly proffer their seat numbers on introduction… “Hi I’m RowRR263… and you are…?”

The first question asked of eachother in Durban social and business circles when meeting someone for the first time… (and second time… and… heck okay… every time…) will be

    “Where were you on 26/5?”

Such is the importance in the Last Outpost of colonial rule attached to beating the Stormers for the first time in four attempts.

So please fellow Stormers fans… show a little kindness and try a little tenderness… much like South Africa wining the world cup in 95… this really is a historic occasion for the Sharks fans.
