Steyn back in the Tank

Steyn back in the Tank

Frans Steyn has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks.

The Springbok back left the Sharks in 2009 to join Racing Metro on a two-and-a-half year deal and won 61 caps for the French club. Steyn recently expressed his desire to return to South Africa and the Sharks were always likely to get his signature.

Steyn will officially join the union on 1 July, but an IRB ruling stipulating that any player registered after 1 April is ineligible for the play-offs means that Steyn would watch from the stands should the Sharks progress to that stage of the tournament.

‘It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him,’ said Sharks coach John Plumtree. ‘He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with the Sharks.’

Steyn has played 47 Tests for the Springboks and is expected to wear the No 12 jersey in the three-Test series against England in June.

Welcome back to the Sharks Fransie.

I could now say with confidence that Sharks now have the best centres in our conference.

Jordaan, Fransie, Tim, and Bosman. Bosman has improved huge this year, he is playing so much better than last year.

Can’t wait to see Fransie team up with Jordaan or even Tim.

Oh yesssssssssssssss! Thank the Lord almighty that this overweight, overrated behemoth has signed for the Guppies, where he can die a quick and natural death. Watching him bumble his way through the Top 14 in France is nothing short of embarrassing, especially in light of his god like status on this site.

Great signing for the Stormers too as Whitehead will not be a happy chappy and most likely be very keen to move back to CT instead of gathering splinters on KP bench.

Good business. Dont think he’ll be used in this years super rugby though. SANZAR rules prevent him from qualifying for the playoffs. He’ll probably need a break as well after coming off a long top 14 season

No, not in the farking least, now at least my theory that Fransie is useless can be witnessed by all…………… in his home country! Amazing news! :)

Just keep him away from the take aways and get him to a barber. The poor boy needs to be sheared!

@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-18: Steyn might not have been incredible for Racing Metro but he’s a pretty damn good player for the Boks and has been a part of all our finest moments over the last 5 years. He was arguably the form 12 at the RWC before being injured and his injury hurt us more than his critics would like to admit. Steyn is far, far better than ANY of our other centres now than Fourie is inactive.

He does need to lose a couple KG’s though.

@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-18: I watched him in the top14 play-off game this past Saturday and he was woeful to say the least.Attempted a few drops from the halfway line as well.Last time he got booed at the tank for doing just that….so interesting times ahead for Fransie and Shark fans alike.

The Sharks seem to be the favourite last outpost for overweight rugby players.

Ollie le Roux, John Smit, France Steyn……….

And don’t forget they also fought hard for the signature of Ricky January who then unfortunately decided to come to CT.

Seems all of Meyers overseas players will be down in SA for the June international
    Steyn-Check
    Du Preez-Check
    Ruan-Check
    Any one left out???

Seems a lot of players are showing commitment & respect towards Meyer.

    20 @ SpiesIsWorthless

He played against mediocre opposition in the WC. He’s been pathetic against the Ozzies and NZ when he’s played them. Now that’s he’s back he will be judged accordingly! :)

  • 29.SpiesIsWorthless: Reply to this comment

There aren’t exactly a host of world class centres that he’ll be keeping out of the team though. Him and De Villiers are as good as it gets for now against the likes of Oz and NZ. I guess De Jongh will be thereabouts too.

I cringe when I see him play over there. Apart from being substituted every game his defence is quite leaky too. He is a substitutes dream – if you’re on the bench as a back you’re always sure to come on for Steyn at some stage!

JDJ may not get a spot at all
    JDV and Steyn at centers
if he picks Pienaar (on bench)there is no place for JdJ on bench unless you leave out Aplon
Pienaar can cover 9,10 and 15
    lambie can cover center

and i feel sorry for Hougaard he should start at 9
HM has to use Mvovo , basson or maybe habana at 11
So Hougaard is on the bench covering 9 and wings

Even Australia are in an era of pretty mediocre centres, we dont have much coming through behind the pedigree and experience of De Villiers and Steyn, but Adam Ashley Cooper is looking increasingly poor in Super Rugby, Barnes too. There just isn’t the threat we’ve come to expect from Wallaby centres. They’re bound to start Mortlock lite McCabe and lord knows who at 13.
Conversely, the NZ Super Rugby teams and the All Blacks remain extremely strong at centre.
