Steyn back in the Tank
28 May 2012
Frans Steyn has signed a three-year contract with the Sharks.
The Springbok back left the Sharks in 2009 to join Racing Metro on a two-and-a-half year deal and won 61 caps for the French club. Steyn recently expressed his desire to return to South Africa and the Sharks were always likely to get his signature.
Steyn will officially join the union on 1 July, but an IRB ruling stipulating that any player registered after 1 April is ineligible for the play-offs means that Steyn would watch from the stands should the Sharks progress to that stage of the tournament.
‘It is great to have him back with us as we did miss him,’ said Sharks coach John Plumtree. ‘He was definitely an influential player when he left and he will again be that, so it is fantastic to have him with the Sharks.’
Steyn has played 47 Tests for the Springboks and is expected to wear the No 12 jersey in the three-Test series against England in June.

@CoachPete(CoachPete)-44: I’m just encouraged that Spies seems to be feeling the heat at the moment. He’s well aware that people are watching him closely now and actually noticing the inexcusable shortcomings in his game. It really is tragic how such an athletic player can perform so poorly.
28 May 2012, 20:13 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-51:
Yeah i would even start Stander at 8 ahead of Spies for the bulls
28 May 2012, 20:16 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-52: you all good Pete the Frisco coach? Long time…
28 May 2012, 20:17 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-51: sure he’s feeling the heat. I suspect he’s human like the rest of us.
28 May 2012, 20:19 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-53:
long time
Hey Tassies
Howzit going
Our bok side shaping us nicely
28 May 2012, 20:21 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-54:
True he is a nice guy speaks well and compliments others No question there
I just dont rate him as a 8 at all
Bulk him up make him a lock maybe?
28 May 2012, 20:21 pm
@zub(zub)-36: I was sh y te scared the Stormers were going to offer him some ridiculous amount to come down here. (You know those stupid things the Stormers often do…..) I’m glad he is back in SA, as I feel he has escaped the scrutiny many other players face week in and out – now it’s time for us all to see if the man can live up to the almost mythical status he has been awarded when playing in the Bok jersey on a regular basis.
28 May 2012, 20:27 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-54: Sure, but harder for him to acknowledge he needs to work on his game when he’s in his Loftus demi-god cocoon with the fans chanting his name in a cultlike orgy of worship.

Forget the overweight angle.
A kid from Grey college in the Vrystaat who gets too much too soon, has only really been understood and coached properly at international level by Mr Eddie Jones. On that particular occasion at the WC he was brilliant as he was in the right role for the team.
He now gets out of the stifling environment of Bloem and Shorks country, and lives in another culture with a different language and different rugby environment where basic skills are of the very highest level.
Instead of waiting to draw his pension in later years, he went over young. The effec of this experience will have a tremendous effect on his top 3 inches.
With a good SA conditioning regime under Meyer and Plumtree. Fransie is about to play the best rugby of his life. His rugby intelligence will show on the field, and we all know he has NEVER lacked BMT, something his Grey College and Natal pedigree has brought out in him from young.
This 3 YEAR contract is excellent news! we are in dire need of big strong centres at the moment, and Fransie is much more than that.
Welcome back vetseun.

@hensopper1(hensopper1)-59:
Ag dont worry There is surfing at Durbs and his new wife to keep him in shape
28 May 2012, 20:37 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-56: I do share your opinion but the way some folk go on about him you’d think he’d just joined the ANC. I think he’s feeling the pressure of captaincy and he’s not what the Boks need right now. Personally, I’d like to see any combination of Brussouw, Daniel, Alberts, Coetzee and Vermeulen(if he recovers from injury soon) for the England bash. Stander could be thrown in there too. Not a bad young group to shape the future.
28 May 2012, 20:40 pm
@hensopper1(hensopper1)-59: Natal pedigree?Jeez boet they were rubbish for right on 100 years!They have won a few CC’s in the last twenty years,so I really have to wonder about that ‘pedigree ‘ you are talking about?
28 May 2012, 20:40 pm
Can anyone tell me how Frans Steyn creates more space for the outside backs when he’s employed as a crashball specialist? I really don’t understand the logic.
28 May 2012, 20:42 pm
whooohoooo!
once a shark, always a shark.
lovin the stormers bi tc hing.
some of you sound like the ugly girl who didnt get asked to the matric dance by the cool guy
cant wait to see this 26yr old back at the tank.
yes, 26 yr old.
he has 5 years on jdv and should have replaced him 5 years ago already.
haha, the time has come.
28 May 2012, 20:42 pm
@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-63:
He is a crash ball specialist yes you are correct
When he breaks the line crashing thought it he creates space for 13 and wings
if he passes
28 May 2012, 20:44 pm
Pedigree – the dog food brand – then again even that has more pedigree!
28 May 2012, 20:44 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-61:
Correct there boet that group is fine with me
yes about vermeulen but he is injured
vermeulen does not match daniels speed and quickness
Add maybe Johnson to the mix (he is better than Spies) and of color (still a requirement in SA Rugby
28 May 2012, 20:44 pm
He’s got a great pass too and had a brilliant offloading game at the RWC.
28 May 2012, 20:45 pm
@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-63: he offloads in the tackle buddy, much like sbw (not as fluid though).
thats how.
watch and learn because it clear you know fokkol about rugby
28 May 2012, 20:45 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-67: Yes! I’m a big fan of Johnson. I think he’s under-rated by the fans out there.
28 May 2012, 20:46 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-64: Brilliant – I normally just sit back and watch them when HG gets stuck in but now they seem to be crying without any assistance. Shame, sorry
28 May 2012, 20:48 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-65: @SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-68: haha, nice guys, peewee is struggling.
i suppose thats why he blogs, its a learning curve
28 May 2012, 20:48 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-64: hey Ranger what do you smoke through that snorkel boet? One could be excused for thinking our captain’s team is propping up the bottom of the S15 log. Or not?
28 May 2012, 20:48 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-64:
Hey hey Mr Rangerman
As a Stormer supporter I have 8 Sharks in the bok starting 15
if you add steyn as a shark
Is that enough
28 May 2012, 20:49 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-69: He supports the Stormers, their centres don’t know how to offload…
28 May 2012, 20:49 pm
@JamesNkomo(JamesNkomo)-71:
Hey myself and a few Stormers has a nice civil banter with HG yesterday
28 May 2012, 20:51 pm
As they say,now that he is back there is no hiding place for him anymore.Time to show us Saffas that you can still do the job Fransie.
28 May 2012, 20:52 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-70: i am too, he is for me the heart along with adriaan, of that cheetahs team.
@JamesNkomo(JamesNkomo)-71: sheesh, the whining and whinging and wailing.
i think a lot of stormers fans had some kind of delusion that fransie would go to CT?
he is a shark, has played all his rugga here and married a local lass ffs.
he is a shark, end of.
28 May 2012, 20:52 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-70: ditto. I also have no problem if Meyer looks his way for comfort. By gum did he have an unbelievable season in 2010.
28 May 2012, 20:53 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-68:
yes but thats if he passses
I just want steyn sometimes to make better decisions on when to hold the ball when to off load and when to throw the long pass
28 May 2012, 20:55 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-74: If Ranger had his way Pete, he’d make up the rest of the team with his buds from the sea. As long as they swam around in warm water.
28 May 2012, 20:55 pm
Stormer forlife.
Point taken, but all the big unions in SA are a cut above ‘clubs’ like Racing Metro. Stormers included.
The centre of the rugby universe SA is.
Notice no smiley face or any trace of irony.
28 May 2012, 20:55 pm
65 @ CouchPete
That’s the logic yes – I’m still waiting to see it – really.
@ Rangerman
Bitching would be us being jealous about you guys obtaining a class player – this is great joy – joy that the Stormers have thankfully passed on this 26 year old. 26 years old – so young and already washed up. Sad.
28 May 2012, 20:56 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-76: that must be a new first. Has he recovered yet?
28 May 2012, 20:56 pm
Coachpete.
I am probably being a bit harsh on the last outpost.
28 May 2012, 20:57 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-76: lol good thing the Sharks won on Saturday – he may have been spewing hell and damnation if not…
28 May 2012, 20:57 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-81:
hey I hear the Stormers swim at Fishhoek not Clifton
Well except habana LOL
28 May 2012, 20:57 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-64: Great news for our Sharks and Bok rugby.
Fransie just turned 25 in May I read. So he is even younger. He will definitely have another 5 years.
28 May 2012, 20:58 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-78: but can he feesh?
28 May 2012, 20:58 pm
@JamesNkomo(JamesNkomo)-86:
Yeah and you know when we all left he was still taking to himself
28 May 2012, 20:59 pm
@TASSIES(TASSIES)-73:
tassies, nice to see you bud.
nah mate, just look back over the thread, the dissapointment is palpable from a lot of stormers fans.
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-74:
again coachie, you are not the target.
@JamesNkomo(JamesNkomo)-75: jdv certainly doesnt, he thinks popping it forward is legit
28 May 2012, 21:00 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-91:
I know that
28 May 2012, 21:02 pm
@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-83: Pee Wee, you talk nonsense man. Go read what the the Stormer supporters are saying about Fransie being back in SA on Rugby365 and Sports24. They ALL rate Fransie as our best. Jeez man, grow up.
28 May 2012, 21:03 pm
69 @ Delusional
SBW has more talent in his left nut. Hahahahahahaha. Yet I know fokkol.
28 May 2012, 21:04 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-69: Now don’t get hormonal now ranger!We need to respect different opinions instead of getting abusive.Fransie is known for his crash ball rugby and inability to pass the rugby ball.I have watched a fair bit if Top14 rugby and have to say that Fransie was woeful at best for Racing.You can say that he was the Fernando Torres of Racing.How will you describe him after the three years for the Sharks?
28 May 2012, 21:04 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-91:
Bulls fan are a little quiet on this Site
Still smarting from Chiefs and highlanders losses, and looking over their shoulder at the “storming ” Sharks
Watch out Stormers, this weekend we are going to see some furious crazy mad bulls
28 May 2012, 21:06 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-91: From what I have read on Rugby365 and Sports24 all the Stormer supporters there welcomed Fransie back and wished us well and just about most there said he was our very best, all very pleased he is back. Very different what they saying there to here. Just plain jealousy really from some here. Nothing more.
28 May 2012, 21:07 pm
Any details on his salary? Must be extra huge
28 May 2012, 21:08 pm
@rangerman(rangerman)-91: ja that was a 50:50 forward pass. It was only about 2m in front of Aplon. 50:50 I say.
Stormpies were nailed good and proper on saturday evening. Scoreline belied the difference. Had to borrow some vallium to survive sunday.
28 May 2012, 21:08 pm
Steyn is our best 12 IMO
Big strong defender
Crash ball center , drawing 2-3 defenders who can off load to a 13 or wing on inside once half gap is created
2nd option for long deep kicks drawing the backline up first
Can stand back deep for the drop goal
