Coetzee calls up ‘other Louw’

Flanker Pieter Louw has come out of retirement to bolster the Stormers loose-forward stocks.

Louw thought his career was over when he wasn’t re-contracted by Western Province at the end of 2011. But following a string of injuries to the Stormers that has seen Schalk Burger, Nick Koster, Duane Vermeulen and Nizaam Carr injured, Louw has been brought in as loose forward cover.

Die Son reports that Louw is already training with the Stormers. Siya Kolisi is expected to start this weekend but if there are further injuries, Louw may need to slot in as required.

The Stormers have attempted to recruit several other experienced players without any success. Louw’s namesake Francois is tied to a contract in Bath, while Ernst Joubert (Saracens) and Todd Clever (NTT Shining Arcs) are also unable to answer the SOS.

Coetzee said that he believes Pieter Louw can play all three loose forward positions which makes him a valuable addition to the squad.

@Brigadier Van Zyl(Brigadier Van Zyl)-8: Yes, he’s rated “useless, while in actual fact he’s “average”. Thus underrated.

Why did Pieter Louw retire in the first place? He is only 26 and had a number of games for WP and Stormers. Also a agegroup SA representative.Surely he could have gotten a contract either in Europe or embattled Aussie franchises.Hes certaintly as good as say a Jarrod Saffy etc

    Good move,decent player

Apparently both Louw and WP thought that he’d never fully recover from injury and Louw wanted time out to start a business in case this proved true.

Not eligible for the 2 or 3 weeks that really matter, so why not play a voda cup youngster

Average! Are you mad? He is a good player and an excellent team player. The only thing average is WP’s ability to spot and retain talent.

Because they hope that Vermeulen and Schalk will be fit by then.

Dude Pieter Louw is a damn good player at provincial level. I had no idea he’d been released!

The better Louw imho. Francois Louw had one good season and was quick to f*off to Europe before everyone realised that he actually sucks.

Pieter Louw battled valiantly at WP and just never really got his chance. Good player, not as good as our new young loosies, but a damn good cover! I’d still pick him ahead of Koster ANY day.

@the artist formerly known as gunther(gunther)-5: Agree. He was unlucky to be in the same union as so many high profile players. While not in the same class as Schalla and Duane he is a hardworking team man. I hope his conditioning is up to scratch though. Good news for Stormers.
