No Du Preez, Brussow for Boks

No Du Preez, Brussow for Boks

Fourie du Preez and Heinrich Brussow were the big omissions from the 32-man Springbok squad to face England in the June Test series.

It was believed that Japan-based scrumhalf Du Preez was informally offered the team captaincy last week from head coach Heyneke Meyer. However, it seems as if the player has made himself unavailable for selection as he’s been left out of the squad. Eighthman Pierre Spies and centre Jean de Villiers should be front-runners for the captaincy.

Cheetahs openside flank Brussow is also a major omission from Meyer’s first official Test squad. His high penalty count this year is a probable reason for his exclusion. Stormers duo Juan de Jongh and Gio Aplon can count themselves unlucky as they were overlooked.

Stormers flank Siya Kolisi was not picked. However, he and six other young players – flank Arno Botha (Bulls), prop Frans Malherbe (Stormers), flank CJ Stander (Bulls), centre Francois Venter (Bulls) and scrumhalf Piet van Zyl (Cheetahs) – will train with the Boks during the series. This will allow these players to gain experience in the Test set-up, but they won’t be eligible for selection.

There are nine uncapped players in the squad – flank Marcell Coetzee, wing JJ Engelbrecht, lock Eben Etzebeth, flyhalf Elton Jantjies, lock Juandré Kruger, prop Coenie Oosthuizen, flank Jacques Potgieter, lock Franco van der Merwe and scrumhalf Jano Vermaak.

There are 15 survivours from of the 2011 Bok World Cup squad. Wing Bryan Hanbana is the most experienced player with 74 Test caps.

‘We were always looking to start the season with an experienced squad to face England, but injuries to certain players and the non-availability of others have made it difficult,’ said Meyer.

‘What we’ve lost in experience, we’ve made up in passion and desire to play for the Springboks. We have put together a squad with a nice balance between a number of veterans and players with less experience as we start to build for the rest of the season.

‘Working with these players during our four planning camps this season has been great and really made a very difficult selection process a bit easier. There were a few unlucky players that didn’t make it and they will get opportunities in future as long as they keep on knocking on the door.

‘The nine uncapped players have all put up their hands during Super Rugby this year and we know they have what it takes to succeed at the highest level,’ he continued. ‘We realise that it is impossible to please everyone when it comes to selecting squads like these, but we would really like to see the entire country stand behind us as we take on England.’

Springbok 32-man squad for June Test series:

Backs – Bjorn Basson, Jean de Villiers, JJ Engelbrecht, Bryan Habana, Francois Hougaard, Elton Jantjies, Zane Kirchner, Patrick Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo, Wynand Olivier, Ruan Pienaar, JP Pietersen, Frans Steyn, Morne Steyn, Jano Vermaak.

Forwards – Willem Alberts, Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Ryan Kankowski, Juandre Kruger, Werner Kruger, Beast Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen, Jacques Potgieter, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Pierre Spies, Adriaan Strauss, Flip van der Merwe, Franco van der Merwe.

That’s a bit of a stretch as we didn’t play against the ABs for years, due to isolation.
You misunderstand my motives though, which is not political, but a genuine desire to see the Boks as the top side in world rugby.
We live in a different world and our players are far more cosmopolitan than before. However good a coach HM is at regional level, I have my doubts about what I perceive as a patriachal approach based on outdated values.

Well as you ask so nicely I was congratulating the boys and Dawn for not feasting on the Cocaine/Keo story!! As I say, *** and drugs, hardly anything new!! But…the other point

Speaking as a European woman I was delighted to think the women were going to be invited onto Keo TV but you know what,I found the floor to face shot of you on the first broadcast and the lascivious comments to be very archaic and rather disturbing!
It made me wonder if this was normal behaviour in South Africa or if it was Keo having fun!!

Things are great actually thanks, sadly not due in SA until next March, so no Bok rugby for me.

Wondering if the Boks will be doing an EOYT over here, if so I would not see them play until this Autumn here!

Your opinion is appreciated. Was it normal, probably not. Was it meant to attract comments – in hindsight yes. Does the camera determine the person I am. No! Do people have the right to paint me with same brush. No. Am I responding to comments made in jest – no. There is a fine line between truth and lines. One is sniffed at! Decide which one. I guess males will find this hard to understand, but I’m sure you would take the time to decipher it.

Bok rugby produces the finest ’7′ FLANKS. Gert Smal; Jean Smith; Teuns Stoffberg; Danie Roussouw; Vermeulen etc.

A big fast’ tall (he fits the bill here) lineout option; big tackler; strong ball carrier mean and nasty type. I do not think he will play a back-up role. He will be central. His physicality is huge, even by Saffa standards.

This kind of player is crucial to the blend of loosies good bok packs need.

Don’t know if it’s just me but Jacque Potgieter seems to have suspect hands. I also prefer CJ and he’ll get an opportunity in due course. At least he knows the coach is looking at him. But next Sat, the run-on loosies will look like this, I reckon:

    8 Spies
    7 Alberts
6 Marcel Coetzee or maybe Daniel – who’s been around longer.

He’s not going to be dishing out too many first caps initially and will rely on the more experienced guys.

I meant that your allusion to post ’94 as the reason for the the ABs becoming dominant didn’t take into account that we hadn’t played them for years.
In fact, if you remember, the ’95 RWC ABs were considered a break from traditional AB rugby. Although they lost, that change to a more expansive approach signalled the birth of the current AB game which has dominated world rugby ever since.

@roobarb2(roobarb2)-1086: couldnt agree more with you but based on working combos and Bulls players playing together and past bok experience I doubt he will start with Etzebeth. Think he´s start Flip and blood Etzebeth as a sub. I would start him myself and dont rate Flip much – but think thats the way HM will play it. I think he could have included De Kock Steenkamp as well as an option for lock – he´s been solid. Franco plays well but makes some horrible stuff ups sometimes but doubt he will play unless theres an injury.

  • 1231.stormersboy: Reply to this comment

I was on record when HM was selected as Springbok coach that I thought him a good coach BUT that I was concerned that he was too Bulls-centric, being in the set-up for so long.

The Tacitus’ and co of this blog were very indignant and spoke of his “gravitas” and other imagined qualities yadda yadda.

I said I would reserve judgement, but I must say, he’s starting off on a very bad footing.

    3 Stormers out of 32.

    A disgrace.

There’s no other way to put it.

I don’t care if the Springboks win, not like this. Sorry.

Bekker, Schalk and Duane will all eventually come into the mix.

And Kolisi is still part of the enlarged training squad.

But the 2 players who can feel justifiably aggrieved are Juan and Aplon.

His team will take time to evolve. And some, unfortunately, will fall off the bus if they’re unable to make the step up.

We just require a bit of patience. At the end of the day, it is Heyneke’s neck on the line.

Nikita, you can’t complain if you sexualize yourself on Keo TV and then get judged for it.

Sadly you set yourself up for that one. I’m sure you are a very intelligent woman and all that, we all wear different hats in life. The problem is the one that you display.

The only contact we have had with you is a fairly brief introduction on Keo TV with the boots and all that, you haven’t written any articles or anything so unfortunately that is the sum total of our experience with you, some playful banter aside.

Now with the Keo harassment angle, you will come squarely into the spotlight and giving cryptic references will not help. Either come out in his defense and say that you had no experience of any of that or remain silent until an official statement is made by HSM. Anything else and you are just feeding the fire I’m afraid.

The only thing I am really interested in is:

Was Monty one of the complainers???

Just nod if you can’t say anything……

Only Heyneke Meyer himself brought Stegmann over from Grey, and not Brussow.
HM also said that Steggies shoudl carry more, and that is exactly what happened right from the start of this season, and unfortunately he got injured, it happens

and now tell me, what do you think is going on behind the scenes.
Stegmann is a better ball carrier than Brussowtjie anyway, was his 8th man and go-to guy when they still played together, and he might just make the team in August.

    So in short; nope.
