Springboks 22 England 17
9 Jun 2012
GARETH DUNCAN brought you live commentary from the Test in Durban.
FULL TIME: SPRINGBOKS 22 ENGLAND 17
80 mins: ENGLAND TRY! England have possession as the hooter blows and they find themselves running into the Springbok 22m area. The visitors swing the ball wide and wing Ben Foden dives in at the corner. Walsh asks for the TMO’s assistance, and the try is awarded. Farrell misses the conversion. The Springboks win!
77 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn secures the hosts a 10-point buffer with his fourth penalty of the game. The Springboks lead 22-12.
76 mins: The Springbok scrum goes one better as they win the penalty. Good effort from reserve hooker Adriaan Strauss, replacment prop Coenie Oosthuizen and Jannie du Plessis.
75 mins: BIG SCRUM! England have the feed to a scrum inside their red zone, but the Springboks turn the set piece 90 degrees. South Africa have stolen possession.
71 mins: IN YOUR FACE…AGAIN! Tuilagi is making De Villiers his bunny. Another big hit sees the Springbok skipper brushed off his feet.
69 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! After missing two previous goal attempts, Morne Steyn slots an important three-pointer. The Springboks lead 19-12.
67 mins: Tuilagi concedes a penalty as the Springboks rush into England’s red zone. He’s pinned for being off-side.
64 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Pietersen concedes the penalty on this occasion, and Farrell steps up to nail his fourth successive kick at goal. Ill-discipline is costing the hosts. The Springboks lead 16-12.
62 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! The visitors strike back minutes later as Farrell finds the target from his third goal attempt. The Springboks lead 16-9.
59 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! Habana with ANOTHER telling run into the England’s danger area. Great backline interplay sees De Villiers offered space out wide and he bashes over to score his team’s second try. Good finish from the skipper! Morne Steyn misses his second conversion. Springboks lead 16-6.
56 mins: Habana gets an inside pass and runs into the England red zone. Play is shifted to the left side of the field, towards wing JP Pietersen, but England do well to force the speedster into touch. Some off the ball stuff between the two teams now after inside centre Francois Steyn boots the ball into a England player.
55 mins: Scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar is on for Hougaard, who didn’t have an impressive turnout today. Maybe he is a better wing than a halfback?
53 mins: England inside centre Brad Barritt is replaced as he walks off with a swollen eye. A big shiner for the former Sharks man. Toby Flood takes his place.
52 mins: Great attacking momentum from the hosts. Alberts with another strong ball carry into the England 22m area. The visitors are penalised as they restrict South Africa – a great chance to extend their lead via the boot. However, Hougaard takes a quick penalty tap, which proves to be the wrong decision as the ball is knocked on moments later. Three points wasted!
47 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! A great attacking move sees South Africa power into England’s red zone. Alberts with a strong run and a good offload to tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis. Hougaard and Beast find themselves inches short of the tryline before play is moved wide, where Morne Steyn dives over. The flyhalf misses the following conversion. The Springboks lead 11-6.
42 mins: IN YOUR FACE! England outside centre Manu Tuilagi puts in a big hand off on De Villiers!
SECOND-HALF RESTART: Habana is back on, while reserve fullback Pat Lambie replaces Zane Kirchner. After the kick-off, the Springboks boot play back into England territory.
HALF-TIME: SPRINGBOKS 6 ENGLAND 6
40 mins: Steyn pushes his goal attempt and it drifts miserably away from the posts. The ball goes dead and Walsh blows for half-time.
39 mins: England flank Tom Johnson concedes a penalty at a scrum in a kickable position as he uses his hand to keep the ball from squirting out. De Villiers asks referee Steve Walsh if there’s time to kick for touch. Walsh says no, and Morne Steyn lines up his third penalty.
35 mins: The Springbok lose their first lineout as lock Juandre Kruger fails to claim Du Plessis’s throw.
31 mins: Habana – who has looked good all round – goes to the blood bin. Wynand Olivier comes on as his replacement. Skipper Jean de Villiers is shifted to wing.
29 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn does the business as the ball sails over the crossbar. Scores are deadlocked at 6-6.
28 mins: Moments later, and England concede a penalty. Morne Steyn has the chance to level the scores.
26 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY Farrell slots his second penalty attempt to put his team back ahead. England lead 6-3.
25 mins: Springbok flank Marcell Coetzee is penalised for a breakdown transgression as England surge into South Africa’s red zone. Farrell is told to kick for posts.
21 mins: South Africa win an up and under in England’s red zone, and Pierre Spies is tackled 5m from the whitewash. But the Springboks can’t land the killer blow as they look static on attack. England defence holds up.
18 mins: While the Springboks have forced some pressure via the boot, England are proving that they can also execute a good tactical kicking game too.
14 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn slots the easy penalty from right in front. The scores are level at 3-3.
12 mins: Springboks find themselves in a great attacking position as England concede position in their 22m area. Flank Willem Alberts was the poacher as he was the first to arrive at the ruck. England are penalised as they scramble on defence.
11 mins: England heavies currently have the ascendancy up front as the hosts struggle to protect their own ball at the tackle points.
8 mins: Springbok scrumhalf Francois Hougaard tests England fullback Mike Brown with a box kick, with good pressure from Habana. But the Harlequins man shows great composure and calls the mark.
6 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Farrell is cool under pressure as he converts his first goal attempt. England lead 3-0.
5 mins: Etzebeth is penalised for not rolling away at the breakdown. England flyhalf Owen Farrell gets an early shot at goal.
3 mins: Wing Bryan Habana enjoys an exciting run after catching an England up and under. He beats three defenders before being tackled. Good early signs from the veteran speedster.
1 min: Hooker Bismarck du Plessis’ first throw is accurate as he finds debutant Eben Etzebeth at first receiver. However, nothing materialises from the following driving maul as England counter effectively.
KICK-OFF: Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn gets the game started. And it’s a high kick off, and England fumble early on as the can’t take in possession successfully. The ball moves into touch, South Africa’s feed.

9 Jun 2012, 19:08 pm
Bobby says Spies didnt play well
9 Jun 2012, 19:08 pm
@441 Yeah you see things. You see coloured people
9 Jun 2012, 19:08 pm
If the boks bring that nonsense to the Blacks they’ll get stung in the four nations.
9 Jun 2012, 19:09 pm
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-445: Not happy at all,not at all – it was a piss poor performance but there is planty of room for for improvement – I’ll take the win given that this is a new team with a new coaching setup.
btw the Poms are ranked number 4 in world rugby – the Irish are ranked 7th or 8th.
9 Jun 2012, 19:09 pm
@Hondo Out of the whole game with all the f ups by Hougaard and miss kicks by Steyn and not passing by donkey cart F Steyn you only observed Habana. Nobody takes you seriously and you’re the kinda person that makes Malema look . So keep it up
9 Jun 2012, 19:09 pm
and then Mallet says, spies had one of his best tests in a while
9 Jun 2012, 19:11 pm
hey China I just checked – the piss poor Irish are ranked 8th – behind Argentina.

@RedMan(RedMan)-429:
A N other is spelt Alberts
9 Jun 2012, 19:13 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-452:
What is odd is there are a few bloggers her who think Spies played as well as Alberts??
9 Jun 2012, 19:15 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-447:
He keep doing it for 5 years now, he no longer can fast enough on the outside and his inside runs don’t get him any tries, so he pounces for interceptions which he almost always miss
It called Vanity
9 Jun 2012, 19:16 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-457:
That’s not saying much. Sure he was a bit more visible but certainly not the type of performance expected from a Bok 8 with his number of caps. He doesn’t add anything to the teams performance. He’s just there.
9 Jun 2012, 19:16 pm
I still think Kolisi would’ve added more than Coetsee
9 Jun 2012, 19:17 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-460:
ya
9 Jun 2012, 19:18 pm
@Hondo(Hondo)-461:
Come mate! he played well today especially 1st half
Yes one intercept gone wrong but did a lot of good stuff
9 Jun 2012, 19:18 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-463:
It was his first Test, let’s give him a chance.
9 Jun 2012, 19:19 pm
@Hondo I’m so tired of your hide behind Web racist peosness. Give me your address so that you can prove what a grassy white man you are by ‘debating’ this with me. You’ll have no problem winning I guess seeing that you’re so white and superior

@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-463: wwwwwwhhhhhhhaaaaa d u m n *******
9 Jun 2012, 19:21 pm
@David Granted. On defence though I think Kolisi is stronger.
9 Jun 2012, 19:22 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-447:
Hondo has issues. Habs had his best game in a Bok jersey for a while and he looked really hungry for work. And didn’t just wait for the ball to come to him. The Boks were rusty to begin with but the improvement came in the second half. I foresee an even better performance by the Boks in the next test. England are not the pushovers many expected them to be. They’re a competitive outfit and will push us in each test.
9 Jun 2012, 19:25 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-463: That comment confirms that you are a student. Time to graduate now. On the other hand ,if you want to replace Spies with Kolisi ,and move say,Alberts to 8 then we are on the same page.
9 Jun 2012, 19:26 pm
@IAAS(I am a stormer)-472:
Yeah we were watching the same game i see
Nice runs great on the high ball
looked for work defended well just one mistake at the end
9 Jun 2012, 19:27 pm
@IAAS(I am a stormer)-472: agreed@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-463: Rubbish,
Marcel was one of the standout players, take off the Blinkers
9 Jun 2012, 19:27 pm
@IAAS(I am a stormer)-472: Agree! Hougaard IMO not an international 9. Impact player.
9 Jun 2012, 19:27 pm
@IAAS(I am a stormer)-472:
I can see the boks improving next week
HM should recognize the problems and address them this week
9 Jun 2012, 19:27 pm
@Hondo(Hondo)-441: @kwas(kwas)-446:
Habana was outnumbered 3 to 1 already… did any of you two play wing for the Springboks… guess not!
9 Jun 2012, 19:28 pm
best loose trio would have been Alberts, Coetzee and Brussow
9 Jun 2012, 19:28 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-475: Agree.
9 Jun 2012, 19:29 pm
@David(David)-462: Coetzee and Alberts stood out, i agree Spies wasnt good, Specially the first half
9 Jun 2012, 19:29 pm
@optiplay(optiplay)-476:
Yes he worried me and Stormers exposed him a week ago
He is too slow at the rucks
His box kicks are very poor
He does nto protect the ball well
and he is slow tot he breakdown and slow distribution
I will acknowledge i thought he was the answer at 9, but he was a disappoinment
9 Jun 2012, 19:31 pm
I am Happy the 2 young locks stood up also , bodes well going forward
9 Jun 2012, 19:32 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-471:
Possibly, but the step up to international level is always a nervous time for a young player. I just reckon we’re lucky to have two young players with their ability and potential. The major difference between them and Spies is their commitment.
9 Jun 2012, 19:32 pm
@sharks_lover(sharks_lover)-483:
yes they will get better in next 2 weeks playing together
9 Jun 2012, 19:36 pm
Coetsee makes a lot of tackles. I just don’t believe he is as physical as Kolisi in the tackle. Didn’t see him tackle anybody backward.
9 Jun 2012, 19:36 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-485: for sure
9 Jun 2012, 19:37 pm
@The Analyst(The Analyst)-380: you are being obtuse again…
I will state it again… the boks will never (maybe never is a strong word)… will not physically dominate a TOP team again… no stats needed there
This match bears testimony to what I’ve stated… a full strength Bok team just pips England playing at home… what more evidence do you want?
9 Jun 2012, 19:38 pm
@sharks-lover What did Coetsee do that made him standout? Alberts in my opinion was a standout
9 Jun 2012, 19:39 pm
@Hondo I’m waiting…
9 Jun 2012, 19:39 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-486: you will never see what you dont want to see
all the world is sayign coetzee was fantastic, and here is little student you trying to argue the fact, you may yet graduate in about 40 years from now
9 Jun 2012, 19:40 pm
Well not so much handeklap as I expected here
9 Jun 2012, 19:40 pm
The problem with Spies is that Jake was so enamoured with him that he tried him at 6, 7 and 8 without asking himself whether the guy had the specific talent to be the best in any of those positions.
9 Jun 2012, 19:40 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-489: Anyone playing in a loosetrio with Spies will do a lot of tackling.
9 Jun 2012, 19:41 pm
@RugbyStudent(RugbyStudent)-490: you want me to go through the whole game for you??
FFS man go watch again, you may learn something
9 Jun 2012, 19:41 pm
Changes for next wek
has to be at 8 but it wont
Kirshner was ok Will most likely stay as a starter
Maybe Hougaard at 14 and Habana stays at 11
9 Ruan Boks looked better with him there today
otherwise the same except 8
WO whats he doning on the bench anyway?
9 Jun 2012, 19:41 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-482:
The competition for places in the side is hotting up and Heyneke I reckon is creating the right environment. After today’s performance I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ruan getting a starting berth. And who knows, Lambie also but at 15. Marcel had a good debut but I’d rather Daniel start at 6. Otherwise I wouldn’t tinker too much with the side. But Jannie dup also knows someone wants his jersey.
9 Jun 2012, 19:41 pm
Ai, just give the facts on why you believe Coetsee was standout and stop hiding behind the ‘masses’. Who is this world you speak of? What do YOU have to merit your
