Springboks 22 England 17
9 Jun 2012
GARETH DUNCAN brought you live commentary from the Test in Durban.
FULL TIME: SPRINGBOKS 22 ENGLAND 17
80 mins: ENGLAND TRY! England have possession as the hooter blows and they find themselves running into the Springbok 22m area. The visitors swing the ball wide and wing Ben Foden dives in at the corner. Walsh asks for the TMO’s assistance, and the try is awarded. Farrell misses the conversion. The Springboks win!
77 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn secures the hosts a 10-point buffer with his fourth penalty of the game. The Springboks lead 22-12.
76 mins: The Springbok scrum goes one better as they win the penalty. Good effort from reserve hooker Adriaan Strauss, replacment prop Coenie Oosthuizen and Jannie du Plessis.
75 mins: BIG SCRUM! England have the feed to a scrum inside their red zone, but the Springboks turn the set piece 90 degrees. South Africa have stolen possession.
71 mins: IN YOUR FACE…AGAIN! Tuilagi is making De Villiers his bunny. Another big hit sees the Springbok skipper brushed off his feet.
69 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! After missing two previous goal attempts, Morne Steyn slots an important three-pointer. The Springboks lead 19-12.
67 mins: Tuilagi concedes a penalty as the Springboks rush into England’s red zone. He’s pinned for being off-side.
64 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Pietersen concedes the penalty on this occasion, and Farrell steps up to nail his fourth successive kick at goal. Ill-discipline is costing the hosts. The Springboks lead 16-12.
62 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! The visitors strike back minutes later as Farrell finds the target from his third goal attempt. The Springboks lead 16-9.
59 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! Habana with ANOTHER telling run into the England’s danger area. Great backline interplay sees De Villiers offered space out wide and he bashes over to score his team’s second try. Good finish from the skipper! Morne Steyn misses his second conversion. Springboks lead 16-6.
56 mins: Habana gets an inside pass and runs into the England red zone. Play is shifted to the left side of the field, towards wing JP Pietersen, but England do well to force the speedster into touch. Some off the ball stuff between the two teams now after inside centre Francois Steyn boots the ball into a England player.
55 mins: Scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar is on for Hougaard, who didn’t have an impressive turnout today. Maybe he is a better wing than a halfback?
53 mins: England inside centre Brad Barritt is replaced as he walks off with a swollen eye. A big shiner for the former Sharks man. Toby Flood takes his place.
52 mins: Great attacking momentum from the hosts. Alberts with another strong ball carry into the England 22m area. The visitors are penalised as they restrict South Africa – a great chance to extend their lead via the boot. However, Hougaard takes a quick penalty tap, which proves to be the wrong decision as the ball is knocked on moments later. Three points wasted!
47 mins: SPRINGBOK TRY! A great attacking move sees South Africa power into England’s red zone. Alberts with a strong run and a good offload to tighthead prop Jannie du Plessis. Hougaard and Beast find themselves inches short of the tryline before play is moved wide, where Morne Steyn dives over. The flyhalf misses the following conversion. The Springboks lead 11-6.
42 mins: IN YOUR FACE! England outside centre Manu Tuilagi puts in a big hand off on De Villiers!
SECOND-HALF RESTART: Habana is back on, while reserve fullback Pat Lambie replaces Zane Kirchner. After the kick-off, the Springboks boot play back into England territory.
HALF-TIME: SPRINGBOKS 6 ENGLAND 6
40 mins: Steyn pushes his goal attempt and it drifts miserably away from the posts. The ball goes dead and Walsh blows for half-time.
39 mins: England flank Tom Johnson concedes a penalty at a scrum in a kickable position as he uses his hand to keep the ball from squirting out. De Villiers asks referee Steve Walsh if there’s time to kick for touch. Walsh says no, and Morne Steyn lines up his third penalty.
35 mins: The Springbok lose their first lineout as lock Juandre Kruger fails to claim Du Plessis’s throw.
31 mins: Habana – who has looked good all round – goes to the blood bin. Wynand Olivier comes on as his replacement. Skipper Jean de Villiers is shifted to wing.
29 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn does the business as the ball sails over the crossbar. Scores are deadlocked at 6-6.
28 mins: Moments later, and England concede a penalty. Morne Steyn has the chance to level the scores.
26 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY Farrell slots his second penalty attempt to put his team back ahead. England lead 6-3.
25 mins: Springbok flank Marcell Coetzee is penalised for a breakdown transgression as England surge into South Africa’s red zone. Farrell is told to kick for posts.
21 mins: South Africa win an up and under in England’s red zone, and Pierre Spies is tackled 5m from the whitewash. But the Springboks can’t land the killer blow as they look static on attack. England defence holds up.
18 mins: While the Springboks have forced some pressure via the boot, England are proving that they can also execute a good tactical kicking game too.
14 mins: SPRINGBOK PENALTY! Morne Steyn slots the easy penalty from right in front. The scores are level at 3-3.
12 mins: Springboks find themselves in a great attacking position as England concede position in their 22m area. Flank Willem Alberts was the poacher as he was the first to arrive at the ruck. England are penalised as they scramble on defence.
11 mins: England heavies currently have the ascendancy up front as the hosts struggle to protect their own ball at the tackle points.
8 mins: Springbok scrumhalf Francois Hougaard tests England fullback Mike Brown with a box kick, with good pressure from Habana. But the Harlequins man shows great composure and calls the mark.
6 mins: ENGLAND PENALTY! Farrell is cool under pressure as he converts his first goal attempt. England lead 3-0.
5 mins: Etzebeth is penalised for not rolling away at the breakdown. England flyhalf Owen Farrell gets an early shot at goal.
3 mins: Wing Bryan Habana enjoys an exciting run after catching an England up and under. He beats three defenders before being tackled. Good early signs from the veteran speedster.
1 min: Hooker Bismarck du Plessis’ first throw is accurate as he finds debutant Eben Etzebeth at first receiver. However, nothing materialises from the following driving maul as England counter effectively.
KICK-OFF: Springbok flyhalf Morne Steyn gets the game started. And it’s a high kick off, and England fumble early on as the can’t take in possession successfully. The ball moves into touch, South Africa’s feed.

@CoachPete(CoachPete)-144: ABs had the same amount of time and they showed up.
9 Jun 2012, 17:48 pm
@garth(garth)-130:
Hougie is not a Bok quality 9, regardless of his other assets.
9 Jun 2012, 17:48 pm
If we kicked the ball away aimlessly like this against a team like NZL we’d be carved up like a Sunday roast..
9 Jun 2012, 17:49 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-134: This is followed by Argentina vs Italy, it may be worse.
It could be interesting to see Argies reserves for upcoming 4N.

@Nils(Nils)-146:
you would hope so for the people who paid some big rand to watch it live, i’m ok I can switch to lawn bowls on the other channel for some action
9 Jun 2012, 17:50 pm
@David(David)-152: 100% agree. He should move to wing and stay there. We need Sarel.
9 Jun 2012, 17:50 pm
Get Olivier the hell off the pitch, put P:ienarr at scrumhalf and play Hougaard anywhere in the backline!
9 Jun 2012, 17:51 pm
there don’t seem to be any areas of strengths I can identify in today’s performance. I’m talking about the Boks but I could just as well talk about both teams. Summary: not impressed.
9 Jun 2012, 17:51 pm
Terrible Springboks!!!!
9 Jun 2012, 17:51 pm
@garth(garth)-151:

@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-128:
Never with this kind of rugby
from the Boks. Pleasantly suprised by England though. Compare this game to the two earlier games – entrtainment value?? More valuable to make a cup of cofee that watching the game.
See my compatriots are alredy looking for excusses for such dull performance – saw rusty being mentioned already.
9 Jun 2012, 17:52 pm
Sad day when England are running the ball more than the Boks. What have we become?
9 Jun 2012, 17:52 pm
Bismarck is booldy useles and Spies is indeed worthless – but the worst Bok onthe field is Hougaard.
9 Jun 2012, 17:52 pm
the boks are playing shocking slow and lafargic rugby. It is very very predictable at this stage. If this is what we can look forward to for the next 2years then i’d seriously rather not bother, im mean, it’s not even working properly.
9 Jun 2012, 17:52 pm
@NZINCHINA(NZINCHINA)-155: Cetainly this is not ABs-Ire and not even Aus-Wal in terms of excitement and/or quality, but I do enjoy this game. I would not be prepared to pay big bucks though, but watching it for free at home in my PC – just perfect, pretty even game.
As a neutral, I like what I see.
9 Jun 2012, 17:52 pm
lets bring on Daniel please
Speed up the game
9 Jun 2012, 17:53 pm
oh and Kannie du Plessis is pathetic.
9 Jun 2012, 17:53 pm
144@CoachPete….. But not looking to shabby considering
Beast is having a bit of a quite game by his standards and am starting to think maybe Hougaard isn’t our answer to Scrummie after all, thought he was before.
9 Jun 2012, 17:53 pm
Bok forwards not protecting ruck area. English flooding the breakdown and winning it for now. Maybe the lethargic looking Fransie can win the game for us with a moment of “brilliance”.
9 Jun 2012, 17:53 pm
Dont have to look very far to find a bunch of idiots on a sat night….
This is a brand new team and anyone that thought this was going to be anything other than percentage rugby clearly does not know how to listen or read….
Go Bokke!!!
9 Jun 2012, 17:53 pm
the two Bok stand-outs: Habs and Alberts. And the rest: I’m trying to find the positives.
9 Jun 2012, 17:54 pm
Shark lover this is not lambie v steyn this is the boks not the shark love-in
Get over it
9 Jun 2012, 17:54 pm
Maybe Straus too
if habana cant continue then push Hougaard to 11 and bring on Ruan maybe?
9 Jun 2012, 17:54 pm
Jirre, but you lot can moan. This game is still ours for the taking. Keep your chins up, for fcks sake.
9 Jun 2012, 17:54 pm
@Peter Mkata(Peter Mkata)-161: All four teams from the earlier games have more skill and initiative in their small toes than this Bok team and they’re all starting with the same preparation time. Boring, blundering, tactless bunch of oafs on both teams bashing into each other.
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
I like the look of this Marcel boy… him and Bismark the peak of the forwards…
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
@Treehugger(Treehugger)-168:
Yes about Beast and Hogaard not looking great at 9
Push him to 11 and maybe bring on Ruan
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
Expect to see Ruan Pienaar on at about 60 mins. But then they must move Hougie to 11. And thanks for playing WO.
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
This is not a bad scenario to be in as a Bok. Were playing kak, timing poor, no leadership in the forwards. England are playing as well as they have played for the last 2 years, and its 6-6.
I am hoping that the Boks start to gel more in the second half.
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
@Pee Wee(Pee Wee)-169: yes
9 Jun 2012, 17:55 pm
HM could have brought on RP & move DH to 11. All of HM’s aces up the sleeve are blue FFS
9 Jun 2012, 17:56 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-166: Well he cant be worse than Spies but he’ll be chucked around by Morgan.
9 Jun 2012, 17:56 pm
@CoachPete(CoachPete)-177:
Like the way you think.
9 Jun 2012, 17:56 pm
the boks are not protecting their own ball at the rucks. Its been a problem for a few years now. We don’t know how to finish….are the kiwi’s that much better than us? Will we ever catch up with them?
9 Jun 2012, 17:56 pm
Every Bok player looks like they are stuck in 2nd gear. No urgency, maybe its lack of synergy
9 Jun 2012, 17:56 pm
Its their first Test match since last year ffs, if some of you @ssholes cant be positive , piss off and go cry elsewhere
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
@Peter Mkata(Peter Mkata)-161:
its basically the same backline as the last few years and they didn’t score any tries either Meyer has a huge problem in the backs they just aren’t up to it
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
The general idea is for the main powers in the Southern Hemisphere to reinforce the Six Nations as a B grade competition. Now the Wallabies of course forked that up earlier in the week but there is no need for the Boks to do the same.
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
@ossewa(ossewa)-170: How is this a brand new team? That’s the problem, there is nothing new about it.
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
148@Tassies…. No man luvy, you must be more positive……New Coach and very different team and game plan I would imagine, we will only get better.
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
@ossewa(ossewa)-170: Sorry, this is a new team excuse doesnt cut it, it’s similarlily assembled as all the other the teams we’ve seen today just lacking a whole lot more.
9 Jun 2012, 17:57 pm
Heineken remember I expect a 90% win ratio from you for home matchesthis season. We are going to have some wordsi if the Poms take this match.
9 Jun 2012, 17:58 pm
Relax guys, new team, still need to gel a bit!!!
9 Jun 2012, 17:58 pm
@SpiesIsWorthless(SpiesIsWorthless)-182:
No, move Alberts to 8
9 Jun 2012, 17:59 pm
The Boks are not physically dominant as expected – can they win wothout dominating?
9 Jun 2012, 17:59 pm
Seriously, Hougaard needs to speed things up at the base of the ruck. England cannot live with quick phase play. Pity it’ll probably take us 60 minutes to realise this. The less ball in hand rugby is played, the more England have a chance…..
Oh and, Marcel Coetzee..seriously? Brussow would own him at the breakdown with his left hand. The guy should be on the bench. End of story.
9 Jun 2012, 17:59 pm
Easy people. England defence is always offside and not letting our players place the ball when tackled. Walsh needs to be consistent.
9 Jun 2012, 17:59 pm
@ossewa(ossewa)-170: I’d also like to look at the up-side but I have to say I’m struggling. Some individually good but as a collective, the second half needs a huge up-lift.
9 Jun 2012, 18:00 pm
@Dawn(Dawn)-172: no
just sayiing it as it is, dont ,like it? use the scroll by tactic , it’s free
9 Jun 2012, 18:00 pm
and hougaard must really learn how to do box kicks without those ridiculous trains behing the ruck!
